**Quick rant that doesnt necessarily require any responses but will make me feel better**

What is it with bl***y 117 year old women that think they are still ok to drive safely on the roads? Poxy woman nearly ran me off the road while I had my Daughter in the car because she couldnt F*****g see over the steering wheel, doesnt remember how to use indicators and doesnt know how to get her Honda Civic out of 1st Gear. Surely people should be made to take regular tests once they reach/exceed a certain age! This bl***y woman would have had her license taken away decades ago. If I had been travelling at any speed over and above the posted limit there would have been an collision.

** Rant over**

Disclaimer: Obviously men can be guilty of this as well, and the age of 117 was obviously just a rant fuelled exaggeration on my part...possibly.

How did someone dawdling at 20 mph max nearly run you off the road?

Indeed. I should have included that in my disclaimer ;)

Unexpected and non-indicated lane change immediately after a roundabout almost putting me into the armco.

Older people don't have the neck mobility that young people do to do life savers/shoulder checks. They have to rely on mirrors more which is partly why they do things like this.

With the ageing population I think it would be wise to invest in some air horns. A little beep when encountering old codgers would make sure they were still alive behind the wheel and know to keep out of the way :D

yup. compulsory regular driving refreshers/tests from 60 onwards.

...EXCUSE ME ...! ... but at the grand old age of 60 I am more than capable of driving a motor vehicle safely, thank you very much!!! ... and don't need a re-assessment to check my competence.

.... goes off muttering about cheeky young blighters ....!!!!! .... just you wait til you get to my age ... grumble grumble, mutter mutter .... where did I put my specs ...??!! mutter, mutter .......

Not a bad idea that :D

How regularly after that , Neil?

well thats the thing, i guess people can lose their faculties pretty quick..

careful, dont get your blood pressure up :p

im sure there are many many competent older drivers though :)

I'd like to see some hard evidence on what % of RTAs are caused by 117 year olds.
i cant provide any hard evidence but i can tell you that in my home town in the new forest (popular retirement area) there have been many cases of elderlys in autos wiping out several pedestrians also a few driving into stationary objects (vehicles, skips etc). while im sure less common accidents, they usually tend to do more damage.

like i say, no accurate figures on that. just based on news from my local area.

I had a good one on the A38 this morning - the car two cars in front just stopped dead in the fast lane, the car in front of me had to do an emergency braking and swerve inside her (fortunately there was room in front the lorry we were all over taking), and i followed him round with less need to jam the brakes on - as i went past i looked sideways and saw this old biddy of about 103 talking on her mobile phone.

as i pulled away in front of her i looked in my mirror and saw her car start up and continue to bimble along in the fast lane

I can only conclude that her phone had rung and she'd stopped to answer it :bang:

I wonder the % figures of old people causing mayhem on the road compared to testosterone fuelled young people. And of course dicks driving at 130 mph plus.

My 'most exciting' near miss was heading along a national speed limit following a BMW at a safe distance when it suddenly stopped making progress, spun around and stopped facing me partway across the road. Fortunately I had room to drop into an empty parking area.

Driver was a woman of about 35 who had just collected her husbands car from being serviced. It appeared they had forgotten to refill the oil.

God know what would have happened if she was 117

My 94 year old neighbour has a tricycle.....she hasn't driven in years.....my other neighbours (newly retired) have just got rid of their car.........the oaps across from us (three different couples) have all got rid of their cars and every day it is comical to watch the automated garage doors to go up and a mobility shooter to shoot out of the garage at 200mph....

This has made me realise that the town I live in is just a large nursing home in disguise.....:D

Long been an advocate of regular retests/refreshers. Say every 10 years up to 50 then 5 years until 65 then yearly. Plus compulsory eye testing for all drivers.

Interestingly thee are almost as many in incidents related to drivers over 70 as there are for drivers aged 17-19 if you look at the statistics, however deaths are significantly lower, probably as a result of the lower speed. There are indicators that drivers over the age of 80 pose an increased risk, especially at junctions.

Oldest driver with a licence was 107
There's a significant number of drivers over 100

Family friends was in his late 70s. Clean license all his life (not even a parking ticket). Very careful driver though not especially over cautious. One day, with no medical history, he suddenly lost consciousness at the wheel. Crashed into another car and killed the driver.

My aunt had a license when she was effectively blind (doctor thought it would be too traumatic for her to take it away) and I think even my mother (who has pretty bad dementia) still has a license.

Yeah, we should do mandatory periodic retests for everyone.

From the stats it is the 40-59 year old car drivers we really have to worry about, followed by the 20 -29 year olds, though I would like to see the figures adjusted for the number of drivers in each age group.

Dave

I've often thought that the best solution to this problem would be to have machine guns fitted behind my headlights with a firing button under a flip up top on the gear knob.

You mean you haven't already got them fitted?

oh i am in that age group

All drivers over 70 have to reapply for a licence and they are only issued for 5 years at a time now.

It seems unfair to compare 17 to 19 year olds and all old drivers. What's the fatality rate per mile driven per person in that group?

A few drivers have dropped dead while driving around here. Some are only in their 50s.

If you think all old drivers are useless then tell that to Stirling Moss and some of the older racing drivers!

A lot of the older drivers have passed different tests and in their lifetimes driving on the roads has changed a lot. I think encouraging continued professional development style learning is much better than a forced retest. Plus the overheads for forced retests would mean that young people would probably have to go back to waiting months for test dates as a lot of test centres have been shut down. Illegal driving is already a problem and I can imagine many older people in rural areas would just ignore it and carry on as there is little public transport and no other way of getting around. Once you have pensioners driving illegally in significant numbers the entire system is going to break down even further.

The reapplication is a formality - pretty much if you can read the form and fill it in correctly (or get someone to do it for you), hey presto, here you go, sir/madam, see you in 5 years.

Twice in a post slating other peoples driving, you have made reference to something that doesn't exist.
When will people learn there is no such thin as a FAST LANE on any road, it is merely an overtaking
lane, perhaps if people realised that, both young and old, there would have to be the new law
forbidding lane hogging :banghead:

But there already is a 'law' at least that is why people are being fined for not pulling over

Yep and it's quite new as I said

Sorry Ingrid but "would have to be" does not equal "is"
I am aware that it is pedantic but that is me.

God know what would have happened if she was 117

She'd have probably still stopped making progress, spun around and stopped facing me partway across the road. After all the effects of an engine seizing don't change as the driver gets older

I think Ingrid just missed off the "'nt"

Thanks Marc, you're right, it was thinking of all the nuts on here :)

Never been such a thing as 'life savers" for umpteen years now.

Police motorcyclists are taught that mirrors are safer than looking over their shoulders:eek:
