Grrr, got the letter in today citing me for jury service on the 26th June. Sheriff court in Inverness so if you happen to be up before the beak on that day, sorry, you're guilty :D

Oh, this is the second time, first was an embezzlement case, 4 days of looking at till rolls and bank receipts :(

I did this last year - almost. They called me the week before and said they'd got enough people already so I didn't need to go.

:) Glad. Didn't wanna do it anyway. Don't think I could sit quiet watching a guilty person plead innocence.

I've done it twice. Once at the Old Bailey and once at a crown court.

My most enduring memories are the almighty waste of time and money involved in the whole process, and irritation at the wooly pot smoking type on every jury that says he must be innocent 'because those five policemen could all be lying'.

I've been called 3 times now, it got called off twice I wasn't picked the third time.

dod, I thought that once you had served you could not be called again?

Must be lucky never to be called yet then

almost as bad as those right wing reactionaries that say "he must be guilty, he's in court"

You can apply to be excused from jury service if you've previously served in the preceeding 5 years. ;)

About 15 :( Although my strategy may be to go in with a crazed look mumbling "Bring back the birch" ;)

LOL Just turn up wearing a pin stripe suit and carrying a copy of 'The Times' ;)

If he does that in Inverness, they'll think he's the accused!

Or was that a burberry suit and a copy of the Sun??

i don't know why people hate jury service so much, i thought it was intriguing when i did it and would like to do it again :)

Or birfday suit and a currant bun (no fig leaves in Inverness !)

Sure to get off it that way but might be before the beak in the other way ... :cuckoo:

sorry for bumping an old thread but this got adjourned originally and got recalled for High Court today. Wasted a whole day sitting about, being told to go away and come back and got to go back tomorrow. We did get shown the inside of the court and were told, "That's where the judge sits, he'll be the one snoring etc" ;)

Still don't know if I'll be selected or not but the defence is Donald Findlay so it's a biggy this time

I have never been called, i would quite like to do it i think it would be interesting. What happens if you need time off work, do they cover expenses etc? What if you are self employed do you get covered for loss of earnings or is it tough doodoo

I did say it was a good way of wasting time :)

Hard to remember now - think they have set rates they pay you regardless. They pay fares and there is a jurors canteen at the Old Bailey (not free though). There was no checking of details given. As I was off work I claimed the full allowance - which they paid. I could not actually be off work as too much depended on me so I went to work very early at 5am and got the days work for the factory ready then strolled off to the station at about 9.15 to get to court for the 10.30 start. Don't think I actually reduced my wages during that time - just looked on it as compensation :)

I was one of the 20 put forward for a six week case and asked the judge to be excused as i had a business - which he did. Next guy said pretty much the same thing but got refused! i actually did something on about 4 days of my 2 weeks call up - rest of the time was waiting around doing nothing.

Its not like TV as the lawyers don't actually know what they are talking about most of the time. The more incompetent they are the more you get chucked out for a 'point of law'.

The form they give you needs to be certified that you will lose earnings before you get any compensation for it. Shouldn't be too much of a problem as I'm co-owner :D

What it doesn't cover you for is loss of any business I'd have taken in if I'd been here instead of being busy waiting about.

I think this one could well be interesting.

Know any celtic songs? sure fire way to get off :)

The Clerk asked if anyone couldn't manage 7 days so a few of us stuck up our hands, and we got off :D. Doesn't sound like an "enjoyable" trial either. A 20 something guy involved with girls over a 4 year period.
