I like number 2 for mineral, the colours really pop against the black.
Thanks for lookingI prefer #1, but could do with perhaps a closer focus on the necklace. #2 looks OOF on my screen, but it might be my eyes.
Not an easy oneAs Mandy said... time to put the feet up... nice shot and I prefer #1 but feel it needs a border or vignette maybe...
the more shots I see the harder this theme is becoming for me...![]()
black velvet, hense the fussy lookNo.1 for me too Judi, good focus, colours, book pages nice and whiteIf anything, I'm not overly keen on the material bg
As mentioned, 2nd looks a little oof to me tooDid you use a tripod?

yes it is a fold,Hi Judi
well done for havin a great go with smoke , no crit from me but I also prefer the tighter cropped image
Me too, thanks
Mineral....#1 for me , lovely white on the pages , the green of the Malachite is gloriousOnly slight niggle is the lighter greyish patch just below the bottom of the book ...a fold in the material ?
I will have a got at the background thanksI'm liking the first shot with the inclusion of the book, lovely crisp white pages, nice colours to the jewelery too
Minor crit, the blacks could push up to help hide the cloth background ??
Thank-youI like number 2 for mineral, the colours really pop against the black.
Thank-you#1 for me. The WB looks spot on and the addition of the black cloth just adds to it nicely.
thanksHi, number one for me too the other one looks out of focus and very bright
Jason I like #1 the best tooMineral: Hi Judi. No 1 is a no brainer and the stand out shot by a mile. Really like how white and crisp those pages are!
No2 is let down by focus issues as you know.![]()
the cropped smoke shot is the one that i like the best too thanks MarthaI like the cropped smoke shot. It doesn't bother me about the lack of smoke, I think the fact you got some is a bonus, after all he's smoking a pipe! I was wondering what this might look like in B&W?
I like the first mineral shot. The WB is spot on and the black background works well. The background in number two looks quite fluffy and distracting as well as the necklace being slightly OOF.
it's the velvet maybe if i had used something easier to photograph as the background but hey i will have another go at the editingI think the first is really good Judi, nice to have some context with the item.
I'm a bit split on the issue of the cloth, I definately think the bit around the bottom of the image needs to be there, otherwise the book is floating in nothingness, a couple of tiny lighter bits round the top could maybe go, but only a maybe.
Nice work
Who is this Martha person you speak ofthe cropped smoke shot is the one that i like the best too thanks Martha![]()
Kev I like the first too, it was my first choiceTwo good shots but I do prefer the first. As others have said the second is a little soft.
Thanks Alan, no editing done since posting, and yes I think that I could have cropped a bit closer but I would have left all the book inHi Judi
Mineral - #2 is too much oof for me.
#1 is definitely on theme - good white of book and black b/g ( which I think that you may have edited because it looks perfect to me). My only crit would be that i would have taken it /cropped it closer and let parts of the book go out of frame - but matter of taste and how we visualise shots.
Thank-you for popping in, I missed a few in the beginning I think,Hi Judi....I'm sorry I seem to have missed commenting on a few of the early posts ..... I really like both of the pics but the first one has the edge for me, I like the composition and the clarity, the malachite certainly is a beautiful stone![]()

I might suggest brightening it just a smidge , cloning out the couple of little marks toward the top lhs & centre of the book & losing the stray petals.....they seem to get lost in the folds of the material ?Good interpretation of the theme, I just find the second one which is slighty better compositionally a bit dark. I would like to have seen it without such a close crop.
The second image for me composition wise, I would also like to see it not so tightly cropped.
#1 was my first choice really tried to get a sepia look to it, between you and me its really a yellow roseThird one looks good Judi, although I do like the white rose in the first one. Smashing idea....it works well for the theme.
thank you MarkLooks better with the rose lit, I thought it was a white one.
#1 was my first choice, I have brightened it a bit but not posted its on my flickrNice take on thr theme, I prefer No 1 (though I think if you increased the expose a little it would brighten the image up nicely), I like the other photo but the red rose looks oof.
Thank you AndyHi! I quote like #2 and the colour in the rose. Pity it's a little OOF and clipped at the bottom.
Quick off the mark.
Cheers.
Hi Judi
1# for me....the sepia tones seem more in keeping with the era of the book & the rose is well positionedI might suggest brightening it just a smidge , cloning out the couple of little marks toward the top lhs & centre of the book & losing the stray petals.....they seem to get lost in the folds of the material ?
Thank-you Sarah I like it in sepia, that was my original choice#1 for me too please agree with Lynne that the processing very much suits the subject.
thank-youHi Judi
Sense - Much preferring the edit with the wider crop and brightened flower - Good idea![]()
Thank-you, the original book is cream, but a little bit lighter is ok , I have done it but not postedHi Judi, have to agree with Lynne and Sarah 1st for me too though a little lift to the brightness would be nice
ThanksFirst for me, although a little dark I prefer its composition rather than the other two.
Number 1 for me, I prefer the shade and colour of it.
Nice take on the theme and good choice of book.![]()
No stone its part of the leaf, thanks for looking#3 works best for me. Very appropriate treatment. Can't work out what that object is to the right of the book - is it a stone?
Thank-youNo.3 for me Judi, prefer to be able to see all the book and the rose in colour

no ready hands available here or I might have tried it IainA literal take on the theme Judi, but one that works
The last version gets my vote.
Could I offer a suggestion?
I feel it could be added to by maybe having someone hold the book as if to read it, just to lift it a little.
Number 3 on sense for me.
WB looks a lot better and the rose is a nice edition, it compliments the image.
Well done Judi![]()
Hi
Third one for me too but I do like the sepia idea from the first.
I like the edited colour version. The colour of that rose is just lovely. Nice idea for the theme as well.
Prefer the more coloured one Would maybe lose the leaf though. Also the fuller crop works better just a shame about the top RH corner of the book, which I guess is why you cropped in the 1st place.
