Ok for those of you who use lightroom (others can input obviously)

if you're exporting to jpeg for back up purposes do you keep it fullsize and at full quality or do you lower the quality/size in any way?

I suppose i might as well ask the same question if you're saving for web whilst we're here

1000px maximum @ 72dpi with 80 quality for example?

I use..........

700 pix, 72 dpi and 80 quality for websized shots

For backup....Why are you exporting to JPEG for backup purposes?

not entirely sure, something in me that worries the raw format will go awry because of standards not being set like an iso....and it fills some time in my day :P

I backup the raw and settings/db (aperture). Exporting for web or if I want to do something like get one printed etc. I do have a number of shots I exported as tif's on DVD's as well, but I'm not 100% certain why I did that... seemed a good idea at the time.

In that case then why not convert your raws to Adobe's DNG raw format, I'd bet good money it will still be going long after quite a few other raw formats are unreadable. ;)

I wouldnt bother backing up JPGs at all. RAW because they are - well RAW. And TIFs because it is an accepted standard and is not compressed.

I wouldn't, I hear Adobes working on a new version of DNG, whether this will be compatable with the old is anybody guess, theres also not huge other support for DNG, if Adobe go belly up (always a possibility in todays climate) you might be hard pressed to find much else to open them.
I would suggest either TIFF or JPEG, both are so common there will always be something to open or convert them around. Wayne

RAW is just a file data format and as long as the information exists anybody can write a program to open/convert it :)

I would always backup using full sized JPEG's, but only if I didn't have the space to back up the RAW and sidecar file from Lightroom.
