Islamic State militants have released a video that purportedly shows the beheading of a US journalist who went missing two years ago.
The footage appears to show a masked man - speaking in English with an English accent - killing James Foley, who was seized by armed men in Syria in November 2012.

Suggestions are that he was murdered by a 'British' citizen and fellow captive, journalist Steven Sotloff, is threatened with beheading unless US stops actions against the extremists.

Why the quotation marks around "British"?
People are beheaded every day in the middle east. How horrific is it that such barbarity exists in our world.

We have never been prouder of our son Jim. He gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people.

We implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. Like Jim, they are innocents. They have no control over American government policy in Iraq, Syria or anywhere in the world.

We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person. Please respect our privacy in the days ahead as we mourn and cherish Jim.

There is a widely held belief that many of these people may seek at some point to return to the UK and they would then pose a direct threat in the UK.

Precedent has already been set, and those chosing to return to the UK face arrest upon arrival.

One man returning from fighting for ISIS in Syria (Mashudur Choudhury, 31) is already in prison after being found guilty of terrorist offenses in Syria.

Choudhury is currently on remand awaiting sentence. Although the Judge said it would be a substantial prison term, we don't know what he means by that...yet.
As for the events that sparked this thread, get used to it. ISIS/IS whatever they call themselves this week are likely to become much more prominent in our lives...And deaths.

It is a serious subject and one that affects us all and don't think for one minute it doesn't. It has already happened at least once on our streets and will no doubt happen again.

Its alway been an high risk area being in any war zone its part and parcel of the Job,as for if he was a British subject yes i would want to know, and if he ever get back into this country he should face justice

The problem their is if the Syrian rebels cant offer any protection for journalist from IS,their suffering is not going to be expose :(

But IS/ISIS don't care. The suffering under them will be equal to what they have under the current Syrian regime, if not a lot worse.

I've not seen the video nor do I want to. But I have seen some stills of before. Beheading is one thing if, As I imagine they take a great big sword and off in one go.

No the beheader looks like he has a small knife so I doubt it would have been over quickly.

Animals.

End of.

This is a very interesting article, because it shows how complicated it can be to "interfere" in another country.

I thought it was pretty stupid of Hague and Kerry last year, to admit that they were aiding rebel forces against Assad in Syria, because I already had a pretty good idea who they were. It was also common knowledge that Asians of British descent, particulalry from Sunni Pakistani families were going to fight a "Jihad" (holy war) against Assad.
We messed up in Iraq, by creating a vacuum which was filled by violence, we have messed up in Afghanistan because the place will return to Taliban control when we leave, we messed up in Libya helping to get Ghaddaffi ousted, and we have messed up in Syria by arming the very factions who hate everything the West stands for - tolerance, democracy and justice.

So now it looks like Asad was right... but in the mean time US sold a lot of weapons to ISIS and now they will have to sell more. Sweet if you are an investor in certain industry.

This man was killed as an ISIS retiribution for the US bombings carried out to assist Kurdish forces in recapturing the Mosul dam in Iraq.
This one isn't about Syria.

The trouble is that the terrorists are just one head of the Hydra. Cut off one head (unfortunate choice of phrase given the dreadful occurrence) and two more grow in it's place. This will continue until those that provide the finance are dealt with.

No, not directly. But isn't ISIS one and the same menace across the borders?

trouble is at the moment the rebels are being armed as the armed forces have been depleted. That's not a good recipe for the future.

Your right, the problem the West faces cant fight wars anymore, public opinion doesn't want troops on the ground anymore,General Patton once said don't start a war you cant finish, and that's been problem we never finish anything anymore.

I've had a little hoover up, can we try and stay on track and behave like adults?

Right as you were (most of you anyway) :)

It's damned if you do and damned if you don't. Some compelling arguments on both sides... "Wipe them all out" or "just leave the area and let them sort it out". I would love to think the UN could do something useful and get all sides round a big table and thrash something out but that will never happen. Taking Syria for example there probably is no middle ground.

In some ways I wish it was either wipeout or leave alone, as we seem to be dabbling and not really getting anywhere aside from annoying lots of people. Maybe just say to IS, do what you like in Iraq/Syria etc... And we will leave well alone, but step outside of the zone and do anything to the western world and we will descend and blast you away! We then just walk away and let them sort it out.

there's 3 or more factions would want their own bit of land, then some of it is valuable (oil, water) some isnt. How would you divide it up, when they all want it all...

A stronger govt with the rights of all represented would be a start. Building up a reasonable armythat could defend itself would be another. They've a lot of captured weapons...

And meanwhile, Russia / Ukraine / Gaza....et al....continue to go to hell in a hand basket.
So many full on conflicts at the moment :(

I watched the video on the Daily Mail site (no I was not hoping to see the beheading!) and I was extremely impressed with the courage shown by Foley.

As far as IS is concerned, that isn't what they are after. The Caliphate is a world wide thing and not confined to Syria and Iraq. We could leave it alone, but we'd have to deal with it then on a far bigger scale when it spreads to the next country, or the next.
There's no discussion with them, unless we are all going to say "Yep, ok, we'll all convert to Islam what time's prayers?" Or their interpretation of it, which we aren't all about to do.

Now this I DO agree with!
The act was appalling, but his dignity and ....poise....in the situation was beyond brave.

Agee no easy answers, but the moment they redirected towards the Kurds, at the end of the day the best option is to go in hard against IS and take them out of the picture in Iraq, then if the remnant head back into Syria,it will be up to the rebels to accept them back or finish the job.

:bat:...I thought it kept it quite light in there personally, certainly wasn't nasty:(
No one said it was, we had a request to delete the thread due to the banter.
I cleaned it instead.
