Have tried looking into few books but no luck so far. Does anyone has a step by step guide [whitepaper] on how to download, configure and use it for building a website please? :thinking:

most hosting companies will do this for free anyway, ask your hosting provider, click one button and your away
 
i didnt have a clue when i first used it. all i can recommend is to install the full version (with all the examples) and just muck about with it.. try messing about with different bits and then when you know what you are doing erase it and start again. its the only way :)
 
I found the installation relatively straightforward, but then I don't know what your base level of knowledge of things like FTP transfers, and Database set up is like.

If you have any specific questions then please feel free to ask. I have built a few websites using this now, and know my way round the basics at least!
 
Joomla is a good system for creating websites. The only thing I will say, is if you use it please make sure you keep it upto date with the security patches as I get to see too many Joomla sites that have been compromised or defaced due to people not keeping them updated. (They have release 2 patches/updates in the last 4 weeks alone)

I am getting somewhere with the installation but my port 80 keeps getting blocked. I even uninstalled skype. How can I check which application may be riding port 80? :thinking:

Do the Free Joomla templates usually come with so many [crowded] menus? Does the excess menu items need to be unpublished or deleted via control panel? :thinking:

You and me both mate, never seen so many options. Still can't get my head round articles, categories, sections, layouts :thinking: It's doing my head in to be honest.

But, to try to answer the question I think I just unpublished them. Having said that I also deleted one set of menus and from then on just got 404 messages, had to reinstall the lot :bang:
 
Tried joomla in the past but prefer e107, very easy to set up, customise and reskin with your own images, logos and colours.

Oops forgot to add, also ties in with coppermine and its also open source

Heard about e107 Trev but never used it. Also heard it's easier to use etc etc but me thinks more and more hosting companies are supporting Joomla rather than it's competitors like Drupal or e107 and hence the shift....... :D

It's like having 70% of the population using MS Office rather than whatever Apple came out as a competition although I am sure the majority of those 70% must be hating MS products like me. :gag:

You still working on a localhost or have you gone live yet? I'm struggling with how to change the background colours to be honest, tried editing the CSS files but it's not sticking for some reason :bang:

Yep, still working on local host mate as getting my hands dirty with Joomla. Have got a Free account on 5quids and will try and upload it there soon B4 paying to some hosting company(s).

Excuse me if I am stating the obvious, but have you checked the file attributes are set to allow you to write to the file.

Yep, it's one of the control panel options. I'll take any suggestions you have though :)
 
I run all my websites on Joomla and Mambo ( actually migrated from Mambo to Joomla and its honestly is the Mutts nuts!!)
You can add quite a bit of opensource add ons which is really cool like ecommerce (Virtual Mart) etc. I have found this book by Barrie North invaluable.
Check it out - its worth its weight in gold :)

i thought mambo became joomla? joomla is exactly teh same as mambo in the CP, when TPF first started we had mambo as the front end, was a bit hard work at the time..i went back to joomla for something im working on and its ok once i got my head round it. Its just finding componants that do what i want that is hard work

ohhh I managed to do that after a while going through the CSS...
Can't remember how thought.. migh trawl through it all later for you and find out.

They started off as Mambo until all the developers (every single one of them) quit and started Joomla on their own.
This came about over a disagreement with the developers and the company who they worked off - Miro.

Anyway Joomla, IMHO, is the better CMS. Mambo is good and works very well, I just like the Joomla community better- thats all :)

joomla does seem more 'useable' and has a lot more going for it.

The first site is good, the second site is awful. I've yet to see a truly exceptional Joomla website.

Both are NOT mine :D so you are welcome to send the respective webmasters your thoughts and comments.

Joomla is not considered an exceptional webs design software but utilised more for the CMS purpose imho. :)
 
My pleasure lol. But you're correct, it's a CMS. But even still, you have to design a front end right? And that runs off Joomla.

Mine was created with Joomla and a lot of template modification (in fact, it has been through that many versions since I started it...it is 99% my own coding!) What do you think to it?? I know it's not exceptional...but it serves it's purpose!!

A lot of the interactive type stuff is new and not fiddled with yet so other than its functionality....please don't crit the form! :p

Now that's got some substance and unless you told me I would have never guessed that it was created using Joomla. :D

As I mentioned it's a decent CMS building s/w and I am planning to create one for my B-I-L for his eBay/Amazon shop and want him to manage it on it's own once it's been created. Can't be bothered fixing B-I-L's website every 2nd day :gag:
