Will be creating a website for a school, they want lots on there and want pupils, teachers and admin staff to contribute to the website.

I can use Joomla for this creating various groups and areas with access levels. Pupils can be authors, teachers publishers etc.

Pupils and staff will mainly contribute to blogs which will manage themselves.

There will be lots of sections and access has to be limited to certain users.

Can this be done in Wordpress or should I stick with Joomla? A friend says I can do a multi blogging site in Wordpress, but reading up it seems to use sub domains and I am not sure if it is centrally managed or if each sub domain is a separate entity with own controls etc.

I've used Joomla. A few people had advised me to use Wordpress when I created both an intranet and an internet site for work but ended up using Joomla. As above, it's easier to stick to what you know.

I would stick with what you know as that is in itself a head start.

Wordpress is ideal for most people as its simpler than Joomla but it does have its limitations, and access levels for different users is one of them - can be improved with a plug in.

If they want complete "ownership" then look at perch (grabaperch.com) does what it says on the tin, completely on your own host but is a one off £35 lifetime license.
