Jones in the Guardian yet again

If it's their job, raising their own profile is a fundamental part of what they need to do to get paid and get future commissions. If they don't do it, no one else will. But, you already know this.

I have an ethical issue with people doing that at the expense of others. Raising your profile by documenting such people properly in a way that tells the true story is one thing.. dressing them up for the camera to create your "art" is exploitation. Sorry.. it just is.

Just googled him....beautiful images and, I would imagine costly to produce in terms of time and money.

Taking the images at face value, it doesn't look like he shipped their outfits in from a Hollywood props warehouse either so one might assume that they are wearing their own clothes. Where is the deceit here?

If they have got even the slightest benefit as a result of some raised awareness brought about by his work, what is the downside? How do the subjects become victims in the process?

I'm questioning HIS motives.

I'm questioning HIS motives.

What do you think his motives are?
He's a working photographer, his motive is probably to make money from creating images! He's trying to create the best images he can, of subject matter that inspires him and he is hoping to generate as much money as he can in the process. I'm not sure he should be tried for crimes against photojournalism (which he is not claiming to be)!
He has also invested a substantial amount of time, money and a degree of risk in creating the images. Given how the value of professional photography has taken a kicking over the last decade or so, we could applaud him for getting out there, going the extra mile and showing how it can be done.

Did you read the Guardian article I posted in post 44?

Yes! However thin you slice it, there are always two sides! This actually made me chuckle, 'Papuan tribal leader Benny Wenda, now based in Oxford'.
I'm just looking at this from a working photographer's perspective. I think the images are beautiful. I also think he had to go out on a limb (on many levels) to create them. He could have done all of that and been offered £100 an image by some magazine....or 'exposure'!
He has found a way to be a photographer and make money. Check the business section out to find plenty more people who are trying to figure out how to do that!

Maybe he should just stick to the raw honesty of wedding photography?! ;)

Whenever anyone photographs someone there is exploitation at some level. If the photographer realises that it is one thing, if they deny it quite another. It seems that Jimmy Nelson is in denial: “No money changes hands. You offer food, a ritual party with a goat or a cow. I spend a lot of time ingratiating myself. It’s narcissism. It’s playing on their vanity,” he says. Seems to me more like his ego is the one being massaged.

Anyway, where can I see more of Harry Windsor's pictures?

They have very little power Phil, at least not the power you might think. They're bound by rules, convention, tradition - and the media. Whatever they do might be applauded and detested in equal measure, but either way, it will be scrutinized minutely and judged ruthlessly for better or worse. The latter being pertinent in how this photography jaunt is being reported.

.

Personally i'm looking forward to Hazza joining TP for some unbiased crit. ;) ( friends of mine who are in the army have met him and say that he's an okay bloke )

(Btw are you a secret middleton ;) ? )
