Will be picking up my 1st canon L lens tonight :) wahoo. Buying a 70-200 f4 L IS from one the forums members so kind of excited.

Sold my 50-250 to add the final funds.

Is there anything I really need to check when looking over the lens?

nice choice. don't worry about the humming from the lens, it's normal from the IS, unless it's more than just humming. The focus speed should be extremely quick (not like a couple of post I've seen saying in excess of 1 sec to travel focal length).

Other than that, usual check for dust, wear and tear, focus/zoom rings etc. It's a super lens, so you won't be disappointed.
 
It's more than just humming, more of a whirring noise but it's normal - the IS on this lens is just a bit noisier than most and nothing to worry about :)

It's an epic bit of kit.
 
Apart from the usual checks already mentioned you can hold it up to the sky and check for excessive lens creep when zoomed, make sure the zoom and focus are smooth and not gritty, try out all the aperture settings to make sure they are not sticking and try manual focus and make sure the focus ring does what its supposed to do. Welcome to the L club! It's addictive so keep your credit cards locked away and think up some good excuses to tell the wife when large chunks of cash vanish! :lol:

As others have said, its a great lens.

In addition to what others have advised, I would also try the following:
- Mounting and removing a filter to make sure the threads are clear and undamaged and there is no distortion in the filter ring (indicative of a knock)
- Lens Bag and hood present and correct?
- Box and original receipt available preferably. Granted, it won't affect the operation but it will detract from one of the benefits of L lenses, ie residual value should you choose to sell it on.

Got that right Bob. Had a good chat with Eddie who is a very nice and helpfull chap.

So far with just a few test shots taken inside due to it being dark all i can say is OMG the image quality is crazy and thats just veiwing the shots on the camera.

Don't go looking for problems! A lens like that, from a long-term respected member (who will have a nice Hasselblad outfit for sale shortly :D) has just got to be as close to 100% as possible - more chance of getting a duff one new.

Unless you really really know what you're doing, tests for AF accuracy and pixel peeping for 'bad copy' sharpness etc are almost bound to lead you up the garden path. We've seen it so many times on here.

It is a wonderful lens. Sharp as you like and just so nice to use. Perfect size, weight, lovely smooth controls :love:

BTW Ruffy, not really long enough for bikes. 100-400L?
