Well I'd been thinking about it for a while and after seeing mention of Currys having the D300 at a good price I happened to be in the Harlow store this morning and oh dear, they had one in a glass cabinet... so bang goes my credit card balance

According to Opanda it had done 18 shots so it's obviously been demo'd a little and it took the store assistant about 15 mins to find all the bits for it as they'd been put somewhere for safe keeping.

Now I just need to get to grips with the beast, but in many ways (so far) it seems easier to use than my D80 due to the extra dedicated buttons/switches, so I'm off to give it a try now...

My thanks to those that pointed out Curry's had the D300, although my credit card might think otherwise :D

You've just bought yourself a nice camera.best of health to enjoy it

You wont be dissapointed.

I feel like a D300 & Currys missonary...spreading the good word etc.

I haven't had a chance to check out my shutter counts but 18 sounds like you hit the jackpot.

Can I check it using the internal memory? I won't get my CF card until Wednesday as I am away for a couple of days.

Did they knock anymore off it for you? I got £20 or there abouts, thought I might of managed more than that but I just wanted to get the damn thing home and start playing, figured I already had a bargain at £880.

well done and enjoy, I will.

Kevin.

Congratulations on the purchase. Mrs_C is really enjoying hers. Don't forget to send off the 2 year warranty

Thanks for the  guys. I've no doubt I'll have a few questions once I get started properly - there are a lot more options in the menus compared to the D80.

Hi Kevin, yes I was quite pleased it only had 18 on the shutter count, not sure if you can check it using the internal memory, do you know if you can copy images from internal memory to pc if it's on USB? If you can then maybe you could check like that?

I didn't get any more off, so £899, which I think is still a good deal so I'm happy enough, although clearly not as good as £880 :D

A couple of quick questions: does the D300 not come with a little black cover for the hot shoe (my D80 came with one), and there are some little plastic "thingies" on the strap fittings, what do they do and should they be taken off before fitting a strap?

Matt

Oh, I did get one "extra" too, I found a 1GB Lexar CF card left in the camera, not much I know, but every little helps

im jealous!

Had mine a month and I love it ... still a lot of camera for me but I hope in time to master the b****r :-)

Guys - I'd recommend either David Busch's Nikon D300 Guide or Mastering the Nikon D300 by Nikonian Darrell Young. Either/or. Both eaksy peaksy in terms of info - I have both, but David Busch's probably just shaved it for me. Loads of good info that the manual just doesn't give you.

p.s. no plastic hot shoe thingy, by the way.

Welcome to the club :) Just checked, I rolled over 60,000 clicks on my D300 last weekend on Mull - you got some catching up to do!!!

Doh. 1st time I read this I though 60K click in a weekend !!! I then realised what it meant as I told Mrs_C :D

Got mine yesterday too courtesy of Jessops in Bicester. Thanks to the lovely forum member on here who reminded me about the £50 discount if I used a particular code... that saved money has gone to my parents who used it to buy me a lovely new camera bag for it. I really cannot wait to get out and play with it. I'm just waiting for the battery attachment to arrive now - hope it comes before the postal strike gets underway. And then I shall be armed and dangerous!

I thought the exact same last night, my D90 had a hot shoe protector, so it seems the D300 doesn't need one! The little black thingies on the strap are there to secure the ends of the strap, just stops the thin ends from fafing about, like you have on a watch strap to keep the end from sticking out.

Right now I am so jealous of that little find, I have no card, sold all my CF when I went SD on the D90, waiting for an 8GB Sandisk III Extreem to be delivered.

Congrats on the purchase - may it bring you many years of happy togging

Yikes 60k actuations, yep quite a way to go to reach that!

My first impressions of using it compared to D80 are that the rear LCD is just so much better, and also the shutter sounds so different, I guess that's because it can do so many more frames per sec!

Oops, I didn't explain myself terribly well, the black thingies I'm referring to are on the camera's fixings, not on the strap itself.

Not coming by RM I hope ;) It must be so frustrating having the camera and no card, hope you're sorted soon.

had mine about a year now and I love it to bits, it does everything I want to do with a camera and never fails to impress, long live the D300 club.

Oh, I know the ones you mean now...I just left mine on, I thought they were there to add extra support to the strap contact point...

Sorry my earlier reply must have sounded quite condescending, pointing out the obvious! :bonk:

Thanks Kevin, I'll leave them on then, and no need to apologise, when I reread my original sentence I could see how it could easily be interpreted that way :)

Really looking forward to getting out there and using it now, but day off work and it's dull and grey here, typical :(

Welcome to the club.

Had mine about 4 months now and still learning.

Hope you enjoy,
Ken

A couple of quick questions: does the D300 not come with a little black cover for the hot shoe

As far as i know all Nikon's have them, however most people tend to lose them when they stick a flash on top, i don't think it's any real big deal, but i'm sure you could get a spare from Nikon or probably ebay, as regards your strap try changing it for an Optech, they make a hell of a difference around your neck, and also don't advertise the fact you have a £1000 hanging off you, the D300 is one hell of a camera, and probably still the best cropped camera around, sadly i don't have mine anymore :(, as i'm now part of the D700 club :D

I feel sorry for you. :p

I imagine there are one or two kind souls on TP who would generously do you a straight swap of their D300 for your D700

I have fitted the OpTech strap from my D80, as you say, it's somewhat more discrete than the yellow/black Nikon one and more comfy too.

Sounds like the hot shoe cover isn't supplied for the D300 then, suppose that's one way of keeping the cost down on these cheap cameras ;)

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

As Tel (TG) will testify, I just can't get on with my D300 since having to sell the D700...for your own sanity don't pick up a FF camera if you can help it!

:bonk:

I bought my second D300 over the weekend. It's a cracking camera for the price. It only cost me £740 for my first one (brand new from Jessops) and £550 for my second one (second hand with 20,000 clicks).

I can't for the next time I go out togging with a D300 over each shoulder. :)

I just got mine (mint s/h) last week and I am thrilled with it. :)

Well done Tracer, I'm really happy with mine, only had it a day but the controls feel much better than the D80, I don't think it's just psychological, although that could have a bit to do with it :D

Just need a bit of decent weather so I can get out and practice using it.
