Blimey am I late with you John!

The keyboard shot is lovely and more music from you which I like :)

I love the dof and the fact you focused close rather than mid way - looks very effective!

Linear - yes more architecture and lines :) and a lovely low viewpoint!

And a compact too :) Puts me and my gear to shame :lol:

Thanks very much, On simple, I aimed to get the focus point on the lower third, I'm glad it worked and got picked up on. I was glad I got the time for the little walk for Linear, and as soon as I spotted that line straight and so obvious marching across the park, I knew than that was what Linear had to be. Of course even with the liveview only display on the P&S it was damn awkward to line up :D..

I wouldn't go worrying about me putting you to shame though John, not with this little thing, but I might ... get the oppo to take the SLR around your normal shooting ground in London at the weekend :D... See what I can come up with...

John,

I love the DoF that the small sensor helps provide and it really works with this shot. I love the linear element of this shot but I think it is competing with the museum. So as attractive as the Museum is I would be tempted to cut it off all together (along with the round building on the left). I think you'll be left with an absolute corker of a shot.
 
Thanks Simon, I shall have a look at the crop later when I can get at the original, the edit facilities on photobucket, just aren't flexible enough to allow me to tinker with it as I want.

Well done on both the simple and the linear shots. they're both great.
Really like the Simple picture; I've seen some great shots recently, close up, Mono and small DOF with great lighting. this is definitely one of them! great post! :clap:
Like the linear shoot. love the way the lines disappear into the horizon! nice one! :thumbs:
 
I hate subjects and themes like this (wait that's an emotion... :D) what with having to go away on training, and problems with cars and other things, I've had one of those weeks, and it left me feeling like this:

Lessons learned

1) Getting everything lined up and lit is getting easier, so that must be something.

2) If you've been shooting pictures of birds, and set the camera to AI Servo mode, don't expect it to beep at you to confirm focus is locked (didn't spot this one till after I'd finished :bang:)

Things are much better now and generally looking up.

Emotion, well there's certainly emotion there! - woulda been better if you actually ripped your hair out though :razz: :p

Lighting and focus look excellent and it's fits in well for the Emotion theme, so it's a big thumbs up from me...:thumbs:

Exactly what I thought - I find it physically impossible to take an in focus self portrait so you get kudos just for doing that! Add the lighting and pose and you get a round of applause :clap::clap:

Your emotion shot is nicely taken John, well done!! I am so self critical about pictures of myself that ninety percent are binned, so I applaud you just for that.

Clarity, lighting, colours all work! a good shot! :clap: :clap:
 
Fits the theme John, a self portrait would scare the life out of me (and most of you for that matter)

Thanks DS, if you have a remote shutter release it's not too tricky, as long as your not to far away from the camera. Getting focus was actually easier on this than my others, I didn't have to subs anything for me.

It took a while thinking, but I decided to revisit the idea for my simple image, as a counterpoint to it. I decided to go in real close (macro) and get a shot of one of the ley mechanisms on my flute as this is a complicated piece of engineering. Of course this includes the complications of lighting and the complexities involved at the close working distances.... So this actually encompasses quite a lot of complex parts... I rather like the reflections that the ring flash thingy has created, a side effect I hadn't counted on, but I'll go with it :D.

Shot with my 55-250 with the Raynox attached, lit with the 300AFD and my home made ring flash thingy. I decided to process this into Mono and whack up the contrast far more than I normally would, so more complex processing too ;)

Not a lot of lessons from this week if I'm honest, other than the shot is probably not very good as I'm happy with it :bonk::bonk: :nuts:

It means it's a used piece of kit, lots of detail...:clap:

wonder whether it would work better without so much blank black to the left...and instead add the blank black to the right...our eyes tend to scan left to right....and the natural curve on the right might help lead the eye out to the black....

dunno...could be waffling...maybe if this was a crop you could try my crop idea so I can see if I'm talking rubbish lol

I will shut up now :)

Thank you. You know, I agree with you :bang: wish I'd spotted that at the time. It's not cropped, only straightened a little, so not much can be done with that image.

Hello John, I'm back :D

Emotion, really like this one and it echoes frustration when faced with this challenge very well. And has been said before SPs are difficult and not many of us try them, though I don't know why. Maybe we need to view the result as a picture of someone we don't know and judge it technically rather than resort to our automatic response of 'Oh God, is that me, look at those lines/chin/nose/teeth/whatever' :clap::clap:

Complex - I love abstracts and this ticks all my boxes even if I didn't know what it was. Well done :clap::clap:

Whilst there are some technical difficulties with shooting an SP... i.e. you can't see through the camera, it's actually not that hard to overcome using the self timer and a remote shutter release. I think you may be right about the critique of self, rather than the image being what puts people off doing them, and no I'm not going to make the suggestion I'm thinking of now :D :suspect:.

You wouldn't think when I came to this challenge, I vowed not to do any SP's, and yet I've done at least 3...

I knew this would happen when I saw the theme. I ran out of it. I was off for a few days and no way to setup the shot I wanted to get. So I've settled on this one, as it's all I was going to get.

Not a lot of lessons really...

When you are going to be on holiday, it's very possible that you won't get time to setup the shot you wanted.
You're also not necessarily going to be able to get a decent shot of something that will meet the theme (I'm not too happy with this shot, but I got something at least).
