John's 2010 52, Week 27 Art (July 10th)

Thanks Nattelie

A couple of options this week. My intended image, the intent being, using Macro shots of a watch to work on PP, and layer management etc. I was aiming for a sort of X-ray type effect.

The shot is probably very much Marmite, but I rather like it... and is my 52 image for this week.

Time

Time is relative,
Time is relevant,
Time can irelevant,
Time stands still against our will,
Time is precious and generous,
Time is essential and preferential,
Time waits for no one,
Time is gone just like that,
Time can be cruel & brutal,
Time can be harsh,
Time is our worst enemy,
Time can be special,
Time can magical,
Time can be too practical,
Time can be endless as breathless.

Dan Quiles

But I've also been working on some of my astro data again this week and whilst the original capture was in October , I produced this on Wednesday so I guess it counts...

The Seven Sisters

Or, The Solitude Of Binnorie

SEVEN Daughter had Lord Archibald,
All children of one mother:
You could not say in one short day
What love they bore each other.
A garland, of seven lilies, wrought!
Seven sisters that together dwell;
But he, bold Knight as ever fought,
Their Father, took of them no thought,
He loved the wars so well.
Sing, mournfully, oh! mournfully,
The solitude of Binnorie!

Fresh blows the wind, a western wind,
And from the shores of Erin,
Across the wave, a Rover brave
To Binnorie is steering:
Right onward to the Scottish strand
The gallant ship is borne;
The warriors leap upon the land,
And hark! the Leader of the band
Hath blown his bugle horn.
Sing, mournfully, oh! mournfully,
The solitude of Binnorie!

Beside a grotto of their own,
With boughs above them closing,
The Seven are laid, and in the shade
They lie like fawns reposing.
But now, upstarting with affright
At noise of man and steed,
Away they fly to left, to rightÑ
Of your fair household, Father-knight,
Methinks you take small heed!
Sing, mournfully, oh! mournfully,
The solitude of Binnorie!

Away the even fair Campbells fly,
And, over hill and hollow,
With menace proud, and insult loud,
The youthful Rovers follow.
Cried they, 'Your Father loves to roam:
Enough for him to find
The empty house when he comes home;
For us your yellow ringlets comb,
For us be fair and kind!'
Sing, mournfully, oh! mournfully,
The solitude of Binnorie!

Some close behind, some side to side,
Like clouds in stormy weather;
They run, and cry, 'Nay, let us die,
And let us die together.'
A lake was near; the shore was steep;
There never foot had been;
They ran, and with a deperate leap
Together plunged into the deep,
Nor ever more were seen.
Sing, mournfully, oh! mournfully,
The solitude of Binnorie!

The stream that flows out of the lake,
As through the glen it rambles,
Repeats a moan o'er moss and stone,
For those seven lovely Campbells.
Seven little Islands, green and bare,
Have risen from out the deep:
The fishers say, those sisters fair,
By faeries all are buried there,
And there together sleep.
Sing, mournfully, oh! mournfully,
The solitude of Binnorie!

Second one for me John.
Both my kinds of images and poem rather than the first! :-)

I've often wondered how you pick which 7 are the sisters?
There are 5 obvious ones and 4 contenders. Hmmm.... ;-)

Thanks very much Steve... Actually, there are 6 main contenders (if you have decent enough dark skies, it's happened for me once) you can see all 6. The six biggest and brightest in that image. The seventh, and the "hidden" one, I think is the bright and not quite so large one, just to the right of the main group, but yes there are a lot of "sisters" in that cluster.

I rather like it...

That's good... you won't mind too much then if I say that it's not for me in the slightest. Looks like some dodgy multiple exposed negative. :gag:

The Seven Sisters...

Then you go and treat us to this beauty. Words fail me as I kneel before you and gaze in awe at your talent. :notworthy:

Not at all Lee.. It's that experimental playing with processing, I figured it was going to be a bit marmite.

:D... Glad you liked the second one though

Well done, John. I love both of these. The colours in the first are really beautiful (just my sort of colours) and it matches the poem really well.

The second one - well, I would not know where to start to take one like that.

Jenny

Thanks very much Jenny

first was a good but the second was excellent!

Thank you Dade.

I would have been happy to have produced either of these images. However, I will go for number one because I think it ties in with the poem better than the second pairing.
Well done on both, though.

I loved the tyre. Fitted the theme perfectly and the unusual angle, texture, dof and b&w all worked together a treat as far as I'm concerned.

I like the second one but the first is my favourite - it is absolutely fantastic! Really well thought out and executed, with lovely colours giving a sense of mystery. I could look at it for ages.

First image for me too on the Poem front.

   Wow! You're setting the bar high this year John.
I loved week 1, but week 2's shots are both superb!

I appreciate that the first one may not be to everybody's tastes, but I absolutely love it.
It's got a real SciFi feel to it, and the choice of contrasting colours works well for me.

I always love your astro stuff, and this is one of my favourites from all the shots I've seen
Thanks for the explanation on the Seven Sisters too - I'm another who's always wondered about which are the 7.

Two really pictures there - I love the first one, the colours are great and it's very creative, there are some really interesting shapes in there :)

The second shot is beautiful :)

Very interesting shots for poetry there - I have to say I'm falling right in the middle for the the watch one - I don't know if I like it or not, but the astrology one is fantastic - love pictures like that

Well, what can I say John?

I couldn't even aspire to producing anything like either of those shots.

I love the almost surreal quality of the watch

And I'm in awe of your astro skills :notworthy:

That's 3 fantastic shots in a row and it's only week 2 :D

Thanks very much Sarah, I can't help but wonder if I'm not setting myself up for a massive fall when I smack my head on that bar :D... The Seven Sisters have always been a fave sight, so it's good to actually get in there with the camera.

Cheers Nick, I expected a fair few to not like the watch ;)... oh it's Astronomy btw, not Astrology ... :rules::boxer: :D:D

Thanks very much Jill, both are, I suspect more technically challenging, rather than being emotive as such, you're far better at that sort of image than I. I feel week 3 may be my undoing :D

Hi John. I love the watch face image. Very imaginative. The second image is fantastic too

Thanks very much Martin

I'm slowly finding 52s from last years pack in the pile! I have seriously lost track of who's I've commented on and who I left out. I might even have to make a list of my own and put tick marks beside them

2 cracking photos to start with, well actually 3 cracking photos!

Curved - very good. Like the different perspective on this
Poetry 1 - Might be a marmite shot but I really like it. Very arty, could easily see this hanging on my wall!
Poetry 2 - amazing detail in this! Love this shot a lot

All in all, it's an excellent start John

Wow, just catching up with your Week 2, John - and I'm bowled over.

First shot: Fits the theme of the poem perfectly and I keep going back for another look. There's something really special about it and I can't quite work out what it is! Just like Marmite, in fact! It's sooooo clever. Your processing works for me, big time.

Second shot: After I'd amused myself for several minutes counting the 'sisters' and wondering which were interlopers, I tried to work out how you get such amazing celistial shots. I know you've got some specialied kit, but you must also have to spend a lot of time out of doors on clear dark nights to get something as fabulous as this. Does the 24 x 6 mins mean 24 exposures of 6 minutes? There doesn't seem to be any earthly light pollution either. Where did you take it? It's awesome. The poem's very beautiful and worthy of such a capture.

Can't wait for next week. :)

Jean

Thanks very much Jean. So far, on average, people seem to be favouring Marmite ;)... works for me... Glad to help with keeping you busy :D..

As for the Astro, yes, plenty of time out of doors, sometimes modifying kit on the fly (I did an image of Orion the other night (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=196647) and spent some 30 minutes adjusting my nifty fifty dew shield with a pair of scissors as it was too long) in the cold and ideally clear... Yep, 24 six minute exposures, combined for the final image, this increases the signal to noise ratio of the final result. This was taken from my back garden. As for light pollution, there are filters to deal with that too... I've got one filter that removes all the local light pollution around here, even after 20 minute exposures at ISO800.

I detailed the kit in http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=176976 (the image there was 76 x 6 minute exposures).

I hope I can manage to fulfil the expectations I seem to be setting here...

Hi John,

they are amazing both of them, love the clock face, the PP is top class, as for the seven sisters (excuse the pun) is out of this world, would'nt know where to begin to try and capture that.:thumbs:

Two winning shots John and two great poems! I love your astro shots and the Pleides is a fave of mine but the time shot is really cool! Love it!

No faults from me there - superb!

Thanks very much Guys.

I am also playing massive catchup in commenting. It's been hard enough to find the time to take the shots, let alone look through other peoples'.

Anyway, I'm glad I'm doing that now, because your curves shot is excellent. Great composition and you've captured the texture really well. Excellent conversion too.

I'm not a fan of Poetry#1, but there's no technical reason for it - it's just Marmite like you say. That second shot though is excellent and for me, a much better contender. Just my opinion though.

Ian.

Hi John. Week 2 is a really busy and interesting image. I'm liking the crop and processing and it reminds me of something like flying through time in the H. G. Wells' time machine.

Thank you gents

Love both your poetry shots! The first is particularly appealing.

Phil

Thanks very much Phil

Well... This did not go according to plan. A madly busy week, a similar weekend, and I have to admit I wasn't expecting to find even 5 minutes to get a shot of something. So when the 5 minutes came to hand, I leapt at the chance. This is not what I wanted to get.

Anyway, I used the 55-250 to try and compress the perspective on this one, and I discovered just how hard it can be with a bounced flash on manual to get the exposure right :bang:

Anyway, 2 offerings, of the same shot... I'm in two minds as to which,

The Original

The Mono

I did think that maybe a colour popped version would work, but I didn't have the time to try...

Loving No 2 of the poetry NO 2 image fantastic shot makes you want to reach out and grab that special wish ;)

Week 3 - chopped - very hard week but I kinda like your shot, very simple and lovely.

Thanks Briony

Agreed that the theme was very tricky!

The B+W version looks cleaner and simpler to me.

Cheers, Rob

2 for me aswell John. Simply done and enough tones in the shot to make a good composition of what I thought was a difficult theme...Mick

Colour one for me John.
I think it captures the textures in the apple better than the mono, and it’s such a shame to lose those lovely rich reds to B&W.
Glad that you didn’t go for colour popping, I think it might have looked a bit too forced in this shot.

I sympathise with your lack of time this week, but you've still managed to pull a good one out of the bag.
But why is it that these “simple” themes like chopped, always seem to cause the most difficulty?

Thanks Sarah. I don't know, you'd think it ought to be easy wouldn't you . I guess if you get the right inspiration and the time to get the shot.

Hi John, I know how difficult it is to get a shot in some weeks (although for different reasons ;)) but you haven't fallen behind and that counts for something.

I prefer the mono shot out of the 2 but feel it could be a bit more contrasty for my taste. Not your best shot so far (sorry) but then I need talk
