John's 2010 52, Week 27 Art (July 10th)

Good job with the grunge theme. Focus on the rose tip and Colours are spot on.

cheers

Thanks very much David

Good effort on a tricky theme - I think this would work well as a selective desat just leaving the rose coloration.

Phil

Cheers Phil, I'll look into that later.

Nice one, I can see where you're coming from for a horrible theme. I don't know how you lit this but if you used off camera flash maybe a grid would have helped to isolate the flower from the background. Good effort though, I still have no idea what I'm going to do for this one.

Thanks Neil. I used my macro setup, it's like with my home made ring flash adapter thingy. You're right, have to go look up a grid now... ;) and see if I can't make something... to go with my home made ring flash and home made snoot...

Well done on this one, John. It makes an interesting interpretation of the theme and I like the contrast between the beautiful rose and the contents of your hoover! You've got dof and composition just right, and although I feel a bit sad that a beautiful rose bud has ended up with a horrible fate, I think you deserve a big

Jean

Thanks very much Jean, I know what you mean about the rose bud, but it was a small one, hidden under the main mass of blooms... That bush has a lot of blooms on it. But the contents of the hoover on their own would have been pretty darn dull without the rose to lift it.

I like your approach to the 'grunge' theme - colour and detail spot on.

Thank you

   Definitely a novel use for the contents of your hoover !!!

The sharpness of the grunge on the front edge of the rose is really effective, and for a horrible theme it's a very good interpretation.

I seem to be in a minority here, but I'm not too keen on the colour. Personally I'd have loved to see this in mono . . . but feel free to ignore that comment since I seem to be the only one ;)

Thanks very much Sarah, it seemed fitting for the unusual use ;)... as for the mono...

just for you..

Thank you John . . . although last time I was given a rose "just for me", it wasn't covered in hoover bits

Seeing the two together I can see why you went for the colour, but I think I prefer the B&W.

Hi John,

It is going to take me ages to catch up with everyone, but here goes.

I love your metal shot. I love the composition and the lighting - not easy with that sort of subject matter.

Well, grunge is definitely a horrible topic and you have done very well with your shot. Poor old rose. I much prefer the coloured shot and love the way the colour jumps out. Focus and DOF are spot on too.

Jenny

A lovely image, John, and very imaginative for a horrible theme. Lighting, colour and focus are all spot on.

... that I can believe... How about this one then ...

(not part of the 52, but just for Sarah without the grunge)

Thanks very much Jenny, good luck with going through all the threads

:D... you're welcome... actually... no cloning involved... I just took a shot before pooring grunge all over the poor thing ...

Now what to do for this... I've had another one of those weeks, and no time to actually think about what to do for this... the only ideas I've been able to come up with, have been at best, poor... so I've decided to fall back on something from a month or two ago, at the beginning of my experimentation with wireless off camera flash.

Some of you may have seen this shot at the time, but it wasn't for the 52 and I don't have a problem with using it now...

I know it has some issues

IMG_3518.jpg

Lit with a wireless flash, pointing down the bell of the flower to try and give the flower a sense of being internally lit.

Nice! Major catch uppage from me, so let me just pick a few to comment on!

Love your snoot shot for isolation... and also great subject isolation! Really like that shot.

Also, that's a cracking pano for quality. Something I've been meaning to try myself.

I like that shot for Beginnings too even if it isn't in the right week. I've done that myself too with 2 shots  just don't tell anyone :suspect:

Evening John

Liking your grunge rose - nicely done.
I do really like the tulip - lovely, lovely lighting work on it
Oh yeah - and it's a cracking pano for Quality.

Excellent work

:)

Beautiful tulip shot, great lighting and colour - I love the simplicity.

Thanks very much Conor, glad you liked them... I promise not to tell anyone... I may be doing it again this week :D...

Morning Nick, Thanks very much , the tulip took a fair number of shots to get the lighting how I wanted it, but the effort was worth it, and it helped me get a better understanding of where, how much power etc. The number I threw away that were blown to hell and back or just not showing... :D

Beautiful tulip shot, great lighting and colour - I love the simplicity.

Hi John

Love the photo for Grunge. It's good to see some colour for the theme. The focus and DoF are spot on

As for Beginnings - the lighting has definitely worked IMHO and produced a cracking shot. Doesn't fit the theme without the explanation but who cares ;)

I must have done that a dozen times last year

Cracking shots :clap::clap::clap:

Thanks very much Jill... As you say... it needs the explanation but

Thanks very much Sue

Nicely done John. My eye is slightly drawn to the bright spot at the end of the leaf but its only minor. Colours and composition are spot on.

Was always going to do some form of plant for mine and had a very similar shot in mind at the start.

Shhhhh . . . you shouldn't have told me. I was massively impressed by that

I'm fairly certain that I commented on your tulip shot the first time around. I liked it then and I still like it now
The inner lighting is very effective and I like the composition against the black background.

Lovely lighting on the tulip head - it sounds complicated again but has really paid off. One minor niggle - I find the highlight on the tip of the leaf on the left a bit distracting and would like to tone it down just a little, though not enough to lose it altogether. JMO - it is a beautiful image overall.

Cracking tulip shot and works perfectly with the black background. SOme superb colours

Thanks very much Dan. I think I've sorted the spot on the leaf.. see below

:D... that's me though... honest...

I'm pretty sure you did too Sarah. Thank you again.

Thanks very much Tracer, it's actually quite simple, the only complication was guessing the flash power to use and the corresponding camera settings.

Thanks very much Darren.

For Dan and Tracer, hows this ? Bit of a burn on the tip of the leaf.

That's a beautiful shot, really crisp and strong. The colours are great on the petal and the way the light falls on the stem gives the whole shot a good definition against the black. If this was the first a month ago then hows it going now?

Thanks very much Chris. Not had much oppo to do so... My next shot with off camera flash was my isolation shot in this 52.

A different approach to flower photography John. I like it. The internal lighting lifts the picture well.

Andy

I'm not much of a fan of flower photos but that works really well. The lighting is excellent.

That's a fantastic shot, John. The lighting and the colours are just perfect and I love the simplicity.

Jenny

Thanks very much Jenny... I often try and overcomplicate things and it never really works well...

Art... well... what to do with that... another wide open theme... And it's been another stoopidly busy week with no time for anything. I had something in mind I produced a few weeks back, that in my opinion fits the bill nicely. But as art is in the eye of the beholder....

My original planned shot for Art

hddtriptych.jpg

But last night, I was blessed with the best display of Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) I've seen, how could I resist but trying to capture it... so my alternate for this week

The Art of Mother Nature

and a wide view, that this is from the centre of,

click for full size...

#1 in the Art of Mother Nature gets my vote John. I like the pano effect in the second, the deeper blue I like too but its just a wee bit busy along the bottom edge.
#1 could be sky, then another look, it could be water. An interesting image, simple but effective well done. Iain

really like Mother Nature's art. The first one is perhaps more dramatic. I like the pano too .. at first I wasn't sure about the light at the bottom right ... is it a light or the sun?

It's the first, planned shot for me John . . . but only by a touch.

I don't know what it is, but it's a really interesting shot and works brilliantly as a tri-tone tryptych
Nothing more to say on that other than I really like it.

Very close second for Mother Nature though.
It almost looks like a 3 dimensional texture, and it's really ambiguous as to whether it's sky or water.
Could do with losing the bit of tree from the bottom right though.

Great week for you - and I could see either of these printed off on a large canvas.

Thanks very much Iain, the Pano was trying to capture the entire feel of it, and include a bit of something for context.

Thank you, it's a streetlight... one of those compromises... to get the NLC's needed a longer exposure, and there was not way to fit them all in without getting the flare from the streelight. The sun had set at this point, it's the glow in the lower left.

Thanks very much Sarah. The triptych, whilst it's tri-tone, the colour was not added in PP and wasn't added with Gels... bet you can't guess how ??

As for the NLC's... I was after the patterns... but I'll see what I can do with the tree. I must confess I was rushing a bit to get it, as they only lasted about 20 minutes.

its the first one for me too, i think the tones and the framing set it off nicely, what is it by the way?
The clouds are beautiful but to set them off they need a bit more foreground.

Thanks Chris, the subject of the triptych (which is three seperate shots, coloured during shooting, and not the same coloured in PP ;)) is actually the read/write head of the top platter of a 2Gb PC hard drive. I was asked to destroy it, and have only been lacking the tools to remove the lid, but once it came off...

My vote goes to Mother Nature! I love the first cloud picture and would actually like a bit more of the tree in the shot - to identify it firmly as sky not water. The second one is gorgeous, but again I'd like a bit more of the skyline in the shot (sorry if this is visible in the 'click' version, I've not looked yet). :)

The tryptych is definitely Arty, but it doesn't sing to me in the same way as the Noctilucent Clouds (what a great word!) :)

A busy but good week, John.

Jean

The mother nature clouds image number 1 looks great, baring the trees in the corner which may look better removed just to leave a very nice sky and clouds, this is some i would expect to see on a canvas .

Mother nature #1 definitely for me, particularly if you get rid of the tree. Wonderful colours and textures and would look great on a wall.

Just seen you have sorted the bright spot on the leaf of the tulip in the previous shot - much better now, don't you think?
