^Joe's Photo 52, abstract, pair, safe.

Only 35 pictures, that's nothing, I've just done over 50 of a bottle of Magners, the bottle and camera never moved, the flash did though!

I like the speaker shots. Nice angles and detail.
The reflection of you is an issue and I try to lose that.
I wouldn't have bothered posting the remote control picture, it almost cheapens the other pictures.

All the photos are bang on theme, and I definitely prefer all the latest crops.

I'm back.

Had a big week away from work, on a course. Do not want.

I like the sunset shots, but....
I think a play with the levels in the first would help make the foreground black and more of a silhouette, there looks to be a slight glow in the fields off the sun. I'd also be tempted to crop some of the bottom off.

I don't always bother or mind, but on the second I would consider cloning out the vapour trail off the plane. Also, making it more of a pano by cropping off some of the top of the sky.

Good panning technique on your rapid shot, but the blurred grass (is it grass or light :thinking:) is slightly distracting.

Good shots all considered though.
 
Joe...first sunset is great...second would be better if the trail was longer maybe... try cloning a longer one perhaps...... i do agree with Neil that it might do with coming down with a crop..??

the car.. well panned.. but.. the va-va-voom isn't there.... i think you said you'll have a second post... i await the second.. :thumbs:

I don't really know how to play with the levels, but feel free to have a go and let me know what is done to improve :D

I will try some different croppings tonight and re post, but I won't be able to clone things out. :(

joe..the only thing i do with levels is to see if the white and black markers along the bottom line up witht he ends of the lumpy histogram...

Sliding the middle marker bit thingy majig one way (think it's right!) will make things blacker, but be carefull you don't lose detail elsewhere! But don't worry either way, it's still a nice picture as it is.

Sorry its taken a while for me to get to your 52!

Love your rapid shot... If you look at mine we have gone with the same sorta take on the theme!

My only crit is the odd whisps of something... seems like maybe grass? at the front of the shot....

I was like you and only used Canons DPP for over a year. I've recently added apples apature to my PP programs as it lets me burn and do some selective colour... but I like to keep the PP to a minimum usually!

Enjoying your 52 so far!

Seems like you and I were on the same thought process for explode .... both great shots ... however I just feel there is a bit of punch missing from both. As a sunset/sunrise fanatic ... I hope you don't mind me showing examples of what I would have perhaps considered for these two pics:

Basically I reduced the temperature on both to bring out the blue in the sky, then adjusted the shadow to darken the foreground to make it more of a silhouette, adding a bit of richness to the sky colours.

The second shot needed a bit of a clone of some stray bits on the horizon to the right.

Then there is the bit of crop too ... and I added a bit of a border/frame on the first just for experiment.

I hope you don't mind me having a play with these images, but it has been a while in the Photo52 where I was grabbed by such shots to put into practice my ideas for same.

Well done .... you definitely have an eye for a great sunset shot.

I don't have too much experience on panning, but for me your 'rapid' shot looks good .... and in some respects I think the blurred grass adds to the motion.

No problem at all. Thanks so much for the changes, I think I agree, they're looking stronger with better blues, perhaps I should have used my CPL filter?

I doubt your CPL would have helped Joe, the sun needs to be at 90 degrees to the lens for best results, I don't think it does much when you shoot at the sun or the sun behind you.

Is Joe.thinking more of ND grad filters perhaps. To less the intensity of the sun so you can gain more detail in the foreground. A cpl would be.good for glass and water. Basically reducing glare on referred surfaces... I maybe wrong or it could be having woken up with the mad idea of doing housework at this mad scientist hour....

The CPL will reduce reflections on glass and water, but it also transforms your sky too, bringing out nice deep blues. It also works very well on foliage for the same reasons, reducing reflections and bringing out a deeper colour. Every landscape togger should have one!

i do have one..but guess i've tried it a few times and had the sun at the wrong angle, therefore thinking its not working... i will get out there and try..try again :thumbs:
 
Nice exploding sunsets, I like the colours and nice dark blacks.

Can I ask where you focused?

Rapid, you did a good job there. The car looks a little soft?? and as Neil pointed out the shards or light/grass at the bottom distract slightly.

Week 42 onto weave.

This isn't an easy theme either :lol: I have to say I liked the weave on this little bridge, I think I got the composition okay in the thirds!?

I think there's room for another attempt this week though,I want to get a cyclist weaving through the traffic!

I do like these low angle photographs. I saw one a while ago photographed across a road...really liked it.

I think I'd prefer the front sharp then blurring, instead of as you have it. Also works well in B&W. Nice and simple, yet effective take on the theme and well exposed.

An interesting angle and on theme, or is it more twist than weave :thinking:
As Andy say's a closer focus point may be better, but either way there isn't anything in the shot that's holding my attention.

Perhaps more of a pointing down angle may show more of the weave/ twist?

Interesting take on the theme for 'weave', of which I like the idea.

I think perhaps a higher view would have worked, still maintaining some DOF but getting more of the weave in and avoiding the trees and OE sky in the background.

like your take on Weave...the angle works well but as per Dawn...possibly slightly higher to see more of the subject & lose the sky/hedge would add to the shot ,only a smidge though ?

Nice find though...I'd never have thought to capture that so well done you :thumbs:
 
joe.. i like your take on weave.. how about taking it at a higher angle then turning the camera so we're not flowing with the weave? just an idea.. maybe you tried it.. :thumbs:

Now for abstract, I've no idea what abstract is, looking at others 52, it appears to be 'weird' 'Lines' 'unusual'

These pics, I don't know, are they abstract? Or just a boring set of pictures (Which is what I feel). They're not included in my 52 unless Dawn is impressed :lol:

Hiya Joe,

Great attempt at abstract and I have to say I prefer #3 out of the set and was thinking that it may look good as a square crop, i.e., cropped to just above the top of the triangles.

With the tie (at least that is what I think they are) shots I don't think the DOF works on these and would prefer the whole image to be in focus. They could also make for an interesting abstract if you positioned them in a different way, rather than laid out uniform. Also if you rolled them up, placed next to each other could be great too. Just some ideas for you to maybe try if you have the time.

With the last shot, I'm not so keen on this one (sorry). I have looked at it for some time now and can't quite put my finger on what it is that bugs me about it and I'm wondering if it wouldn't look better with a solid dark background, perhaps plain black would suit it :shrug: However, I like how you have arranged the spirally things (are they egg holders?), they make an interesting object.

I hope this doesn't come across as negative, but more constructive critique.

Joe..interesting ideas for abstract. Well.done to the.combinations. I'm particularly drawn to the jnage which I'm guessing are egg cup spirals.. Great work. :thumbs:

Dawn, that's true, the tie's would be better in focus, And re-arranged slightly. So that's tomorrows job. not to worry with the crit, I need it!! I think you could be put off by the last one by its underexposure.

For me, an abstract photo is an image of part of something that you may know what it is but possibly not what it's part of.

While they tie shots satisfy my understanding of abstract, I think the DOF is stopping me liking them. As Dawn suggests, different angles and configurations of the ties may also help.

The second take on the theme is better for abstract, but again, I agree with Dawn that a crop may help the image. Some colour would help too IMO.

The egg cup is not saying abstract for me, it's clearly a picture of an egg cup as I can see teh full egg cup, and again, the DOF isn't helping.

So, the second shot for me.

Abstract, now that was a theme which caused some debate/discussion...:D

#3 abstract really fits the theme for me. The crop is the better of the two. Top is a tad OOF and the symmetryis slightly off.

#4, cracking colours in the egg cup. If you'd got much, much closer to the egg cup it looks better, for me. I did a crop but won't post because it's quite pixelated.

Of your final 2, the second one I feel is the better of the 2. Again, this is one of them photographs where the symmetryhas to be spot on for it to really work.
