So new 'whip rules' state that the whip should be used sparingly ... as a result a number of jockeys are going on strike saying that they need to use the whip more.
I'm not a horse person but on the surface this reaction looks very questionable ... what am I missing?

The new whips are supposed to be air cushioned or something and only give the horse a wake up, thats from a trainer (Jenny Pitman iirc)
I own a pony, he gets stroppy and needs putting in his place sometimes to preserve the safety of the handler, but a whip ??
I don't get it, a horse loves running and if the whip doesnt bother them, why use it ??? For me i think an ouright ban would be better, then its down to the real skills of the jockey.
Having said this, the RSPCA have apparently backed the new laws in dealings with the horse racing national body.
Let them strike, then whip them back to work

I don't get why the jockys are saying it'll effect their chances of winning. But the rule applies to everyone so surely the chances are the same?

Not if that particular jockey's talent runs out at whipping a horse's backside red raw.

Jockeys on strike!.......... We're all DOOMED..

If the horse is running surely its already "woken up"

Ban whips altogether.

One Jockey said they use the whip to make the horse change direction. I'm not a horsey person but isnt their something at the front that does that.

To be honest they're suffering from little man syndrome

Another example of dictatorship in this country ,but ... I dare say we'll survive .....

I think the jockey's should be made to run around the race track with a Shetland pony on their back and be whipped hard if they don't put enough effort into winning, especially at the end of the race when they are tired and knackered anyway.......................................

I don't think they are striking about not being able to use the whip but at the way they are implementing the new rules. Summat like only 7 times in the whole race with a maximum of 5 times in the last furlongb
They are claiming that in the heat of a race they don't exactly keep count or check if they are exactly within the final furlong. (how longs a bloody furlong anyway? Talk metric!)

201.168 metres, or one eighth of a mile. Just as a matter of interest, do you think in kilometres on the road? I do, and find it a pain converting distances on road signs from miles to kilometres.

Maybe there should be a whip stroke count and all jockeys should receive the same number of strokes after the race.

how do we know that the horses don't like being whipped? (Apparently) a lot of humans get off on it. :naughty:
