just a bit of info on these are these the original ones ie the name joby

which model for canon 300d would you recomend

what are these like personal points of view are they sturdey etc

is there any restrictions you found ie wind makes them useless / to much camera shake

what is the average price for one

im thinking of one of these instead of taking a tri pod to do some night shots on a dual carrage way which can be windy at times just thought might be easier then taking the tri pod

I don't like them to be honest. They just don't feel safe and sturdy enough to me, just a gut feeling I get about them

Not sure whether the later ones do the same, but they were very well known for the grip to lose grip, due to brittle materials used.

I'd always take the tripod. Ok, it's extra weight but sturdier and I wouldn't worry whether the camera will fall off at any time

thanks this is what i needed to know did not want to buy one and something go wrong

I got the DSLR one (not DSLR Zoom) just before Christmas, seen them priced at £29.99 got mine for £17 from ASDA don't know if they still have them on offer, I've played about with it in the house but not used it outside yet, so can't really offer any advice about performance. :)

I reckon it's because of what people I know and have spoken to, have experienced that's put me off. I just wouldn't enjoy my photography using one, not being able to trust it.

Others may disagree. I just feel that you really need to trust something holding lots of money's worth of equipment :)

I had one (the slr model), I was loathe to trust it with even a flashgun.

If it's for clamping to railings I'd rather use a manfrotto super clamp (about £20), although to make it truly adjustable you really need to put the head off your tripod on it (assuming you can)

Got the SLR-Zoom version and its fine within reason. If you're somewhere that you dont have a tripod then it'll do that job just fine. Wouldnt trust it wrapped around something unless i also used the camera strap as a tie-off backup but as a quite to assemble tripod to shove on a table etc its fine.

alot of mixed feelings here and trust is the main one

this is what i wanted to know they look good but needed to know there performance to me im gonna save £30.00 ish and buy some more gear with it im not gonna risk getting damage to my camera or equipment due to it been poor or not trust worthy

thanks everyone

I've got a Gorillapod SLR Zoom and would recommend that one over any of the lesser ones (for any sort of SLR use). As a tripod, it's reasonably sturdy but since it hasn't got a very wide footprint, it's not as sturdy as a "real" tripod. Wrap the legs around something at it'll hold firm. As a test, I shot an 8 second exposure with a Sigma 170-500 lens on a D200 and it showed NO signs of shake. I got mine from 7 Day shop but don't forget that you'll need some sort of head for it (it's bloody fiddly trying to set it up level without one!). Having said all the above, for your use, I would take a proper tripod.

I have the SLR Zoom version and have had it wrapped around barriers and railings a few times. So long as you wrap it correctly, it should remain sturdy. I tend to wrap it so that one leg is directly under the camera and wrapped around the top bar of the railing/barrier going underneath and back up towards me. Then I have the remaining two wrapped around the bar going on top of the bar wrapping round and back towards me on either side of the central leg. I've found it grippy enough.

Regardless, I always keep the strap around my neck just in case of an accident.

As for using it as a tripod, currently the tripod I have won't go any lower than about 12-14" off the ground so I find it useful for if I want to take a real low down shot (until I get my new Manfrotto tripod that is ;) ).

All in all, it certainly has good uses. A bit frustrating to get the camera positioned and level but any slightly wonky horizons are easily fixed PP.

im sorry but thats just a joke! not a very funny one either. the guy is an idiot!
sorry...
for some reason that really wound me up

anyway i have had the small version for a few years and its great with my compact. wouldnt hesitate to use a DSLR on the right version either. these things are great if used correctly.
