Yep, I have a group interview tomorrow at asda.
I'm actually really nervous about it, so was wondering if anyone has any experience of the 'asda magic' malarkey.

Good Luck Mads :)

No advice from me except to just be yourself - don't try to be something you're not.

Oh, and maybe change your avatar ;)

Be enthusiastic always, keep your answers brief and positive ...Know and expand on your qualities, be brief with your weaknesses, and ensure you finish each question on the positive again.

Your expected to be nervous and uncomfortable so you don't have to worry about that bit, no matter how flustered you get.

I assume you Googled 'Asda Magic' because they give a good overview of the process on their site.

From a very quick look, it's probably about a little confidence, 'have-a-go' attitude and probably a sense of humour as well. They are most likely looking for people with good basic social skills, willing to step up and try something 'new' to them.

To be honest, I really liked the way that page was worded and the message it gave. For the interview, you can research the sort of most commenly asked questions, but they might well include things such as 'when did you go over and above your general job description to help someone?'; 'How have you shown that you are a team player?'; 'Tell me about a situation where you had to find a solution to a problem? What did you do? What was the outcome?'; More than likely a 'Tell me your strengths/weaknesses' type of deal as well.

Good luck! Don't be afraid to step up to any challenges, be careful not to be a smartass and enjoy it!! :D

Let us know how you get on!

Don`t go in with a Tesco bag

Thanks for the advice guys.
I did have a google for the asda magic, but for some reason my phone flat refused to load any of the asda website.
Had a chat with a chap who works for asda at the moment (who really wants me on the team) and he's given the same advice as yourselves, stating that if he can get a job there, I should be fine

Just hope he's right, I've gotta get out of my current social blackhole.

my wife used to work for them ,biggest load of arseholes on the planet ,

i know several people who work at asda and none have such a bleak outlook.

a cheeky 10% off your shopping after a while is a good plus point, and special staff discount days is another. I guess its like any other job, you get out what you put in.

Thanks for the input fellas.
The group meeting was nowhere near as bad as a nike group interview I attended. Some of the others in my group were either disinterested or completely overbearing, which gives me hope
I think the interview part 1:1 went well, certainly the chap conducting it was making all the right noises.
Now I've just gotta wait and see.

Glad it went well & hope a job offer is in the pipeline

Steve

Fingers crossed the job is yours.

I have heard they are a very good employer. You get back what you put in I guess. :-)

Sure they are often in the top ten for employers to work for. Good luck.

Good luck. I know you're already done it now, but the key to the group interviews is just be yourself.
Don't be overbearing, and don't be timidly quiet and shy. When you get split up to smaller groups to do your task, if your group isn't doing much, then take the lead, throw some ideas forward and ask the others. Don't be too bossy, but it shows initiative and willingness to do something/have a go, while including everyone.
Just be normal, polite, helpful and chatty but not overly so and you'll be fine.

If you get a one to one interview, it would be good to read up on the Asda values. These are
  • Respect for the individual
  • Strive for excellence
  • Service to our customers
Think about how you have shown these qualities in the past and maybe how you can apply themin the future.

It largely depends on who you get your interview with, it's likely to be the department manager on which you'll be working.
When you have your group selection, they have a few managers in there and they all note down the people they have their eye on.
Oh, and everyone is a colleague. Never staff, worker, or whatever...always colleague ;)

If you need any more info, just ask :)

Edit : Just re-read your post and see you've already been called back for a 1:1?

Oh and if you ever go to the US, you can use your colleague discount card in WalMart too :D

the 1:1's were done after the group exercises, so aside from a driving risk assessment if I do get offered a job, there's nothing doing until they tell me one way or the other.
It wasn't bad I dont think, as I say, I got involved, tried to involve those in my group who were being left on the sidelines, put a couple of ideas over but without being pushy.

How times have changed from the 1960 when you could basically walk into any job you wanted (within reason).
There were no group interviews, no psychometric tests, no Internet to review your questions/answers just good old common sense!!
Hope all goes well for the future.

I agree, things certainly seem to be going over the top. In 1979 the process I went through for my apprenticeship was application, mechanical reasoning and maths test then interview. Now there are group exercises and roll playing assessments too. Way too much for what is really needed for the job.

Home Shopping?

Aye, home shopping driver. Got called back in for the risk assessment thingy which was like a mini theory test which I passed lovely... Now I've outta wait for them to contact me 'by the end of the week'

Well chaps and chapettes, I received a call a little while ago offering me a job. Doesn't start for a month but that was expected.
I'm rather chuffed

Well done mate, Christmas is going to be even better than you expected
