Jinbei Step up: Elinchrom ranger / Lencarta safari competitor

big price difference between jinebi and profoto l

you're telling me ;)

Assuming (say, and this isn't unreasonable...I'm in this for the long run, and not as a hobby) a 5 year lifespan for the jinbei, and ten for the profoto, it's not too different a total cost of ownership mind...

still not in stock...

It seems that there very hard to come by at the minute now looking at Lencarta Safari 600's I'd have just preferd the 400/200 ws split as I could see this as been more versitile . Also not too sure it the plasic fitting on the discovery would take the weight of a large beauty dish

The 60:40 split is popular but personally I view it more as a feature than a real benefit.

Equal effective power can only happen when each flash head is fitted with exactly the same light modifier and is at exactly the same distance from the subject

As for the weight of a large beauty dish, you're right. The new Safari Li-on uses the same head as the Discovery and although I have tried it with a 70cm beauty dish, I don't feel safe recommending it, or at least not at all angles.

That maybe the deal clincher , thanks Garry .

What profoto setup did you get in the end ?

A very expensive one from checking out the prices

7b :) it's... perfect. But it is a big investment, and not one i'd ever suggest anyone make if it wasn't paying the bills for them, its an expensive system to be married to.

I love the 7b and can understand why you went for it. It's a truly robust and professional product, although I only need it once every 4-5 weeks. So I go down the rental option at about £100 a day from Calumet. I can't speak for the other products as I've not used them.

Yeah, rental would have been a great option... however theres nowhere in the midlands that 4nets really, other than tfc and calumet in Birmingham :(

I have got my Jinbei Discovery!!!

box open and dry run test video to follow soon.

Got to put the little one to bed first.

nice! I'd still be really interested in getting one for the ring flash...

yes, ring flash, standard flash (the led modelling lamp one), battery box and spare battery, reflector, ring flash rack all in a flight case.

doing video transcoding...

Ask any question/ask any test you would like to see

Where did you get it from in the end as it appeared that everyone has been out of stock . How much did your full kit cost in the end ?

I have just wrote up the a test report on this kit

Thought it could be too long to post the whole report here. I left it on my blog:

I am going to take the kit out for an location shoot, hopefully will get some video as well.

The trouble with ringflash so far is - it is a hit and miss job. Why? 1) there is no ttl 2) I have only two hands and unfortunately both are on the rig/camera, reading light meter requires an assistant around very closely. For fast pace shooting, this is a show 'slower'

Anyway, it takes practise to get perfect. Very looking forward to tomorrow.

Of course there isn't any TTL:)

With practice, and a sensible workflow, it shouldn't slow you down at all.
1. Fit a wideangle zoom to your camera
2. Arrange yourself at a distance that works with the zoom set in approx the middle position, take a meter reading and away you go.
3. Alter framing by using the zoom control, not your feet - this will maintain the same exposure.

Cheers Garry, your advise is always .

Cancelled my plan. I am going to organise something bigger and get a few Tper involved - watch out.

Holy thread revival :)

Did anyone buy these ??? Comments if so ???

Looking at something like this myself and it seems lots of power per £ :)

Dave

I have the Jinbei Discovery DC-600 and i love it! I could say it was worth my money to invest in it. You can read a review by lightingrumours HERE

Cheers bud :)

EDIT - read it - the only downside sounds like its a bit fragile with huge softboxes - not that I want it for a huge one anyway, 1m will do for my needs - but have you found or thought it a bit fragile ???

Have a look at the new 'Pro' heads that came out last year.

They're more robust, but the downside is that they're much larger.

I'm looking at getting a DC-1200 with one of each types of head & two 5m cables.

I can find anything about a 'Pro' version and only found two suppliers one of whom is in the US - I don't suppose you have a linky to hand ??? :)

There's an article about them on the LR website.

From what I can see they are only just starting to filter onto the market.

If you want to see a comparison between the standard & pro head, ironically the best place to look at the moment is the Lencarta website. They call it the Heavy Duty Flash Head - which is probably a better name than 'Pro'.

If I were going for 600Ws I'd probably plump for Lencarta's version, because I think that they probably have improved the power pack. They don't offer the 1200Ws though unfortunately (hint hint, Garry!)

TBH we're struggling to keep up with demand at the moment, but there will be a new delivery at the end of the month/early next month, and the website now allows people to pre-order.

A Lencarta version of the Jinbei 1200Ws just isn't going to happen I'm afraid, the development and tooling costs are just too high for the potential demand.

I just posted a new thread on how to attach large or heavy modifiers. Basically, attaching heavy modifiers to the light stand, and reducing the weight stress on the head. HERE'S THE LINK.

Hmmmmmmmm.

You understand the concept of LOCATION lighting don't you?

I think that 1002 was as well (at least in his answer!) :p
