Jessops store gone

Hi
Weve lost one in Leicester as well, going to be Tesco Metro now. Its a shame because it was only round the corner.

Leicester is one of Jessops main bases, big article in our local wrag about the situation I think there struggling. Like many retailers things are tough at the minute.

Slow sales it said, which made me smile as most threads on here are which 1000 pound bit of kit to get next. I dont think the tp hardcore has realised theres a recession on.

cheers

john

i love my local jessops, i know the staff and i pop in and talk to them about projects and new lenses etc. i was even offered a part time job there when im 16 (i only have to wait till the 11th of december) and one of them even asked if i wanted to go to focus this year with him and his cousin.

i wonder if any of the redundant staff who are actually helpful and knowledgable could replace the ignorant, unhelpful ones at the derby store  they seemed to think that because i am a scruffy hgv mechanic i have no right to own a 1d mk11 ! my enquiries about 1d accessories met with a disinterested "i'm not going to bother answering the likes of you properly when i could be serving that chap in the shirt and tie" attitude from two of the staff, i avoid the place like the plague now and use jacobs and lce instead. i do hope it's only the derby store and not across the board at jessops

I've just been in town, expecting to get some lens cleaning wipes. However the store has closed. Obviously that was pointed out ages ago, but I wasn't in the country and missed the heads up.

Unless someone knows of one nearer, that makes the nearest tog shop 36 miles away in Inverness.

So, when is the first TP store going to open? :D

There must be a gap in the market for small, knowledgable photography shops now Jessops are down sizing....perhaps we'll see the return of the type of shops that jessops helped to close?!

Personally I like/d jessops as I hate buying large items online, would much prefer a bit of banter and a little haggling with a good sales person.....I guess where they fell down was the hit and miss nature in the quality of service!

Up here at least the Calumet stores are both located on industrial estates, so that's not really a "high street retailer" either....

Yup, ive moved onto Calumet in Glasgow, although still to buy anything major from them....I wonder if they are as welcoming to a bit or bargining as Jessops seemed to be?!

They will do you a deal, it depends on how many thousands of pounds you're spending. Go in and try and haggle over one Nikon D90 body and you'll get laughed at, a couple of 39mp Hassy bodies might get you a discount though

But you didn't state they had to have stores in scotland, you just said nationwide  ;)

Nationwide...throughout the nation as in the whole country, not just one part of it.

Between Jacobs and Wilkinsons the only store that isn't in England is the one Jacobs store in Cardiff, so both are just regional retailers, not nationwide ones....

They are, theyre nationwide in England. Scotland is a whole other nation. ;)

Seriously though, even just taking England as the base, Wilkinson and Jacobs together have only a fraction of the store that Jessops have.

Wilkinson, for example, have eight stores in England, Jessops, had that many in the Glasgow area alone up until last year......

No wonder they needed to close some!!!

Oh I agree. I was just answering your question :D

At the moment it's looking like a death of a thousand cuts, they might well pull through (and I for one, hope that they do) but not in their present form.

Unfortunately that looks like the way it's going.
We hear every week of more and more people losing their jobs/quitting.

Just a matter of time before the administrators are called in, I think :(

Jessops really do seem to be a strange outfit. Sometimes they're really good on price and at other times so bad that they're totally out of sight!

The level of service is equally varied too. They're usually quite pleasant, but it's pure chance if you get someone who has a clue. I'd hate to see them go bust though, that wouldn't help anyone.

I think you will find that Jessops will be closong more stores and trying to inctrease their prescense on the internet.

If you want a decent camera shop then try Pennine photo in Drake Street Rochdale or Hyde Cameras

I was pretty disappointed when the big jessops on deansgate closed. it was a big shop with lots of staff, but it always seemed to be full of customers too, often I struggled to find a member of staff to talk to. some nice big stands of kit from, various manufacturers as well as a scattering of the slightly more esoteric stuff on display, like the big prime telephoto's. They also had a nice second hand rack too.

That said, places like jessops sometimes annoy me because some of the staff just seem woefully uneducated about the equipment. Last time I was in the big jessops, I had to hold back commenting when a member of staff advised a customer that the d40 wouldn't autofocus with most lenses. I looked at the range of nikkor's they had in the cabinet and of the 16 or so lenses on display, only 2 weren't AFS, and they weren't the kind of lenses you'd expect a novice to be considering.

I mentioned this to the member of staff serving me at the time and she just shrugged her shoulders and looked a bit dumbfounded.

I'm not a professional photographer, just an interested amateur, but why do I know more about nikon's range of cameras than 2 people who work at a camera shop, selling cameras for a living. I admit, I don't know all that much about canon or pentax, but then I don't come into contact with them. if I worked at a camera shop I'd consider it to be part of my job to know the ranges almost inside out.

I've tended to find the staff at the manchester jacobs a bit better for this, they seem like they might have actually used the kit. I'm still hoping manchester gets another big jessops though.

Nope, I answered the question correctly, it was you who wasn't clear with your question :boxer:

Nope....I said nationwide, you assumed that just meant England for some reason

Typical English response :shake:

They do (did) have some guys working for them who were pretty knowledgable, but others don't have a clue...
Also, i don't think they truly know which direction they are going, i think you can either be a high street specialist store OR another compact camera shop for the masses (ie DSG), but i don't think they can survive as both. They simply cannot compete with the online giants.

But England is a nation, Scotland is a separate nation.....UK is a collection of Nations.
