I have just been into Jessops this morning to try out a 17-55 lens with a view to buy but they did not have any in stock nor do they keep any in store.

I looked in their display cabinate and they had very few lens on the shelves, most of the little display shelves where empty and had limited range.

I just wondered what your Jessops store was like for stock levels and range of lens.

This is just not about my 17-55 querie, when I bought my 10-24 tamron lens they had one on display but none in the stock room.

Gone are the days when Jessops' stores have huge piles of stock in the storeroom, mainly due to the reluctance of the likes of Sigma to give them a line of credit. In fact the only reason they started stocking Tamron in the first place was because Sigma pulled out...

I have just this afternoon been to Jessops in Bradford for a lens hood. They dont even stock them. (apart from the universal rubber ones) . They said they can order me one to collect in store. Why would I want them to do that when if I order it myself to collect in store I get the web discount. Anyhow glad they didn't have any in stock. He quoted £20 for a canon one and no third party options.

Sounds like its the same accross the country then.

Me and the wife where talking after I got back and we where saying on how many sales they must be missing out on not having the stock.

Just the other day there was a cruise ship in with upwards of 3000 people on board most of which came ashore, town was absolutely packed. we get around 60 cruise ships in a year so that could be alot of sales where people cannot wait for one to be ordered.

Lots of places have limited stock after alot of panic buying in relation to the Japan disaster
I think things will get bk to normal @ the end of yr

I went in to the one in Birmingham yesterday and I was very surprised to see how little stock they had, I asked to look at a few lenses and they did not have them. GRRRRRRR

I'm not having a go here, but do wonder if its to stop people just coming in to try gear out before buying online elsewhere.

If so can't really blame then although it doesn't help them when someone comes in to actually buy an item

My local shop has a good selection of cameras out to be handled, not sure if they have any in stock though, suspect some of the more popular models might be

I can understand that too Rich about the try before you buy online.
But Jessops offer a we will not be beaten on price sceme so technically as long as you can prove the price they should not really loose out.
I would have bought from them if they had the lens in stock to try out and would have price matched at the time.
No wonder shops are loosing out to online places, have it in stock slightly more expensive and be able to buy it there and then or order online and get it slightly cheaper but have to wait a few days.

Wouldn't surprise me, I think they get annoyed with people just coming to see kit and buying elsewhere.

That said a lot of Jessops prices for Camera bodies are among the best especially for more consumery type kit like entry level dslrs, compacts and compact systems.

I was in Jacobs today and was quite surprised to have the guy recommend kit they didnt even sell (Samsung NX10) over the Olympus and Sony systems they did.

Ive bought a few items from Jessops over the past year or so via their 'pick up from store' on the website. They have always had what I have wanted in stock. That is the Warrington store.

As I said my comments were not aimed at you Spike or anyone else, but think their price match is only for high st shops within a 20 mile radius and the item has to be in stock at the other store too

Years ago they matched online prices, bought a Nikon compact on that basis, but when I asked a couple of years back the assistant threw a tanty about how that nearly finished them off (did mention that "sorry, no we don't anymore" would have sufficed)

I know they were not aimed at me Rich sorry if my reply intended that.

They must have someone sitting there just looking for ways to stop the price match then ha ha, as last year I priced a lens on Jessops online place and they took the VAT off and even with delivery price it was cheaper than the one over here ,they said they would rpice match.
Now I go online and they do not take the VAT off ha ha must be to stop me trying it on.

Didn't think that at all, just wanted to make it clear that I was offering up a possible answer.
In fact did it myself very recently, decided I didn't actually like the handling of the 60D so at least they haven't lost a sale :)
