Hi all,

I have Had my 400D today for the first time in about a week. The auto focus will not focus properly, it beeps and flashes in the viewfinder but its terribly out of focus. I had a look inside the cameras lens attatchment to look for any obvious signs of damage. There was a spring loose which disappeared as soon as i moved the camera. Also the springiness has gone from the lens lock so my lenses no longer lock onto the body. This was bought from Jessops just under 5 months ago. Will jessops be able to sort this problem out for me or am i best sending the camera straight to canon?

Thanks,
Rob

I'd try Jessops first see what they say. If its a send away job under warrenty they should send it for you.

Thanks. Do you think jessops would suply a body for me to use in the meantime as im off work the next couple of weeks and wont be happy if i dont have a camera :(

Never been in your situation sorry don't know best asking them.

It would be worth contacting Jessops, but my guess is that it will need to be returned to Canon and I doubt very much if they will provide you with a replacement body until yours is reparied. But good luck anyway.

Can you hire a camera under your work insurance surely if your going to be out of work due to camera going in?

In a word, no. If it was a pro body you might have had a case, but not for a consumer-level one. Your first port of call should be Jessops anyway as some branches are official repair centres.

It sounds a bit as if the spring for the autofocus mirror has broken. This was common on the 300D (not sure about the 350/400), a way to check is take the lens off and fire the camera. Watch the small mirror that is attached to the underside of the main one, that is the af mirror. If the spring is away it will slap and bounce when you take a shot.

If that is the problem then it's a warranty claim and probably a new body. The part costs about 50p but fitting it involves £120 worth of labour :cuckoo:

There is a workaround, but it leaves you with manual focus only and would void your warranty......
