It was £20, and I thought "great, I'll be able to get the flash at a different angle" and set to trying it out on my first self-portrait. I have another tripod (from my husband's telescope) so was attaching it to that, but it's SO SO short! Basically, where I wanted it to go (we're only talking a metre or so) was too far away and it was pulling the tripod with my camera, could have pulled it over. Eventually, the tripod with the flash on fell over and it's now broken  (the cable, rather than the flash). I got an idea of the difference it could make with a really flattering shot, but after that couldn't use it! Mightily peed off.

Do I need to spend more and look elsewhere, or are all off camera flash cables this short?

Flash in the Pan, who advertises on this forum, can supply you with a long cable.

I've got the same cable, yeah it is very short and the coils are very "springy". The thing is it's only designed for when you have your flashgun on one of those brackets close to the camera (where it works well I find).

You can now buy 10 meter ones however, or if you're any good with a soldering iron you can extend the short one yourself fairly easily (there are tutorials out there if you google it)

If you can live without ETTL you could always buy some radio triggers. I got my set from Gadget Infinity in Hong Kong, they came quickly and were not that expensive (about £60 for three recievers and a sender, the newer type not the old ones) However Flash in the Pan on here sells them too I believe.

I bought an extended lenght cord from http://www.ukhighland.com/ecom-prodshow/3MOC-E3.html

Only thing is it doesn't have a flash shoe ontop of the part that goes on the camera, so you are stuck with the one flash on the end of the cord.

But otherwise I am very happy with it.

thanks everyone - does the trigger thing then mean that it won't recognise when you're shutting the shutter and flash automatically?

I've not seen the close to camera brackets.... I guess I was using my hallway, trying to get me with the white wall behind, but it's a narrow space with corners and doorways etc. so I needed to get it a certain distance away to be at the side of me, iyswim. My house, although it's not small per se is a nightmare to find anywhere with a big blank wall to take pictures.

Yeap- sender sits ontop of your camera (on the hot-shoe), and a receiver sits on the bottom of each flash....

The wireless receivers are really good for the price. Stick the sender on your camera, the receiver on the bottom of your flash(s) and when you hit the shutter button, it triggers the flash to fire. Simple.

The part about ETTL means that you will need to set the flash power etc yourself instead of using the ETTL of the camera and letting the camera judge it for you.
