Hi

This is my first post ... i will looking at the forum for a few weeks without posting , hope this is the right place...

I been looking to get the Nikon D90 and saw the intrest free offer at jessops , you get 12 months if your order is over £800, so I added a sb600 to the order to take it upto 955 (colect@store) ..

I went there and asked for intrest free option he went through all my details and said my credit had been declined.. I was shocked as it has never happned (it was only £74 a month)...

So I did a credit score check (i paid for it out of my own pocket) and it came back with 916 out of 999 possible score, putting my credit rating in the top 25% of the population (this is according to where i checked it )

My question is , have jessops just set the limit so high that only a few people can get the credit ?

I am not bashing jessops although i am very disappointed as I do not have the money up front to buy it.

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry to hear you were declined for Jessops credit, it must have been quite frustrating given that you were expecting to walk out of the store with a lovely new DSLR.

I believe there are more than one credit reference agency, maybe jessops used one different from the one you checked?

I recently got interest free credit from Jessops but I've never checked a CRA so I don't know what my score would have been, I would have thought my credit would be about average.

You might want to read this good article about credit scoring:

Jessops interest free credit is provided by Barclay Partner Finance - they are the people who decide whether or not you deserve their interest free credit terms.

Recently, certainly since the summer, Jessops/Barclays have been refusing more and more people for their interest free credit. This is not necessarily due to your poor credit rating but more likely both the current economic situation the country is in and even more likely Jessops own financial uncertainty.

You'll find other companies offer a similar interest free credit, like Warehouse Express, so it may be worth trying them. You'll probably also find they are much more keen with prices.

Hi,

The interest free credit I got from jessops a couple of weeks ago was not provided by Barclays Partner Finance, it was provided by Clode Retail Finance.

I wonder if Jessops have swapped finance providers to Clode or if Clode Retail Finance are a subsidiary of Barclays, nowhere on the credit forms does it mention Barclays.

What annoys me about credit ratings is the fact that if you always pay the full amount when the account comes in you don't get the highest rating, because the credit companies don't make any money from your borrowing

Exactly. I am fortunate enough to have a fair sum of cash in several bank accounts and was shocked a few years back when I failed a credit check to get TRAVELLERS CHEQUES!!! Imagine!! And that was for Amex TC's through the SAME bank that holds most of my money!!

Its all because I never have credit or interest payments on my cards. So, when I bought a BMW in 2007, despite having the cash to pay for it, I took £5k of finance from the dealer (and paid interest obviously) JUST to get my credit rating up.

Daft, but what do you do?

thats so true realspeed....

After my refusal ... I got handed a letter that said I had been refused and I could get a report on my credit for £2 from one of these two

http://experian.co.uk/ and another company (cant remember the name right now)

so i went to experian and I got the free report as i signed up for the free 30 day trial (i will cancel later) .. it dont tell you much .. So i paid £5.95 for a credit score ... only as I was totally shocked i got refused ... and the score was fine.. The fact I bought a car at the height of the downturn for £99 down payment on interest free credit really sums up what a joke jessops are.

Anyhow thanks for the other options will check them out ... to confound it all the staff were useless , at one point he questioned what I put down as my salary which is in the highest bracket on their screen .. Alas... I will to the bottom of this if it kills me....

Irony is .. went to the bank to make a deposit and the lady says , do you know you can get a loan. i nearly told her to call whoever refused me and tell them :)

I've had two credit agreements with Barclays through Jessops and I've always paid the full amount before incurring any interest. I didn't know this was having a negative effect on my credit score! Probably a good reason for me to sop buying more equipment.

Im still in shock ... totally especially now I know others are getting credit my rating is near on perfect.... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh

I buy all my major purchases on interest free credit, a few months ago I bought a Mac from the Apple store using their 0% finance (barclays finance).

I currently have 3 credit cards with 0% purchases on them that will be repaid in full before the interest free period has expired, at which point I'll close the card and get a new 0% one if I need it, I have never been declined credit even though I never pay interest.

After I've said that I'd probably get declined the next time I apply for 0% credit again :)

Be careful doing that cos every time you apply it affects your credit rating in a negative way.

Thanks for the advice.

However, I've been doing it for years, (buying stuff on 0% credit) I've never had a problem, I'm not really worried if it does cause a bit of a problem as I don't really need credit, I just use it because it is convenient at the time, I would not be worried if I was declined as I'm only using it to buy toys, which , if I"m being honest , I can do without.

i have had credit with jessops but that was about 4 years ago.

dont know how its done now??

I had the same problem with jessops last summer, could not get credit at all, even tried warehouse express and couldnt get credit with them either, even though ive had it with them before, i know both party's use barclays as the finance provider, maybe this is the reason...... i also have a near perfect credit score.......

I did some more investigation and Jessops DID NO CREDIT SEARCH on my records before refusing me credit I have checked with several credit agencies including the ones I was asked to check about why i was refused and I have been told 100% over the phone by them that no search was done on my credit by any company for a long time as I havent applied for credit for a 6 months and thus this means Jessops 100% lied to my face.

Just thought Id finsih the story as I was the one who put this post up in the first place .. probably a system glitch or something

Even though they are responsible for racism, global warming and all thats wrong in the world, :D I don't think they lied to you. Bear in mind Jessops finance is handled by a different company who'll give them a yay or nay.

Jessops (or whoever does their finance) aren't obligated to lend you money?? Its equally possible that the finance company has a set of customers they want and if you don't fit they'll decline regardless of credit score

I was in Jessops the other day for a Sony 70-300G and asked for the finance deal. If was the first time I ve ever been declined. I ended up paying in full because I wanted the lens. The following day, I was in Currys, they has the same lens same price. I asked if I can have it on their finance deals and it worked. That day took the lens back to Jessops and explained why. To my surprise they said that they new about it and that lots of people are being declined on their finance deals.

What annoyed more is that I was asked double the amount of questions at Jessops and still didnt get it.

I work for Barclays, in a department very close to lending, finance & risk. I know for a fact that they've tightined up their lending policy which has probably affected partner finance too, i think the reason they ask all the questions as they pre-qualify you before the go through credit scoring. Their decision is made up your current circumstances aswell as the score.

Or it could be just a case of computer said no....

It wont have been Jessops themselves that refused the credit. When I got my Camera from them a couple of years ago on the BNPL they put all of the details into the computer, and the finance company (Barclays in my case) returned the decision on lending me the money.

Also different companies use different criteria for coming up with a credit rating, so your Experian credit rating may well be different to another companies credit rating, and that may well be different to the one that Jessops will have been using.

Many moons ago when I was in my early twenties, I applied for an interest free credit account to buy a washing machine. I was refused, but my wife was accepted.

Basically, I didn't have a fixed telephone at the time and had moved from Manchester to London. Having said that, so had my now wife!

So it's always happened and probably always will. They made up some excuse like I didn't have a telephone or something, but it really just was a reason to give to my face. For the record I have never had any sort of debt, only credit card which I pay off in full.

Sometimes you can be too good with money to be trusted to pay lots of interest which is the real point of trying to catch you out.

Graham
