I was wondering if anyone had any paper work regarding their insurance from Jessops, as I only have my receipt - bit worried I won't be able to use my insurance if needed!

A sorry tale of woe here. I bought a fairly expensive Canon camera from Jessops in Southampton back in August for my 17 year old daughter who is studying photography at college. As well as the camera and accessories, I took out the Jessops Care Plan 2 year extended warranty which the store assistant explained covered me for accidental damage, loss or breakage. Clearly a good idea with a sixth-former, I thought. £62 for 2 years wasn't too bad, I thought, for fully comp including accidental damage.

So, after the news that Jessops had gone into administration, I called the Domestic and General helpline on the administrators web-site to find out the status of my insurance.

Only....they have no records whatsoever of my policy. Jessops, it seems, never passed on the details to the insurers although they DID pocket my £62!!

I faxed them a copy of the receipt, which clearly shows the JCP under their description of JCP 1+2 Dig. Camera to 400.00.

I then spoke to the administrators who had several other calls last week asking the same question. I had assumed that the receipt showing the JCP was enough, and that all dealings under the package would be handled in store by Jessops, but it appears I should have been sent a set of policy documents from D&G within a few days when the policy was taken out. I wasn't.

So.....premium paid for 2 years. Policy never activated. Jessops £62 the richer for nothing.

Seems the only restitution is through my credit card company, who are now investigating the matter and have suspended the transaction.

In theory, they will give me my £62 back....eventually.....and any interest I have incurred on the payment. But that's not the point. I expected a warranty and an insurance policy which never materialised first not last....which seems to imply that back in August, Jessops were in financial trouble.

I guess perhaps they thought the manufacturers warranty alone would cover the first year of repairs. But what if the camera had been lost or stolen? Who knows...
