Jessops in talks to become Canon-only Dealer

happened to be in jessops in Cardiff today and started chatting about some of the Nikon kit, first thing the guy mentioned was that they had the cannon rep in store today I just thought hmmm! is there actual some truth in the rumour then or purely a coincidence I’ll let you decide!

One things for sure they'll have to change all the staff shirts as they are all sponsored by Nikon and has there logos all over the them!

The staff in Cambridge used to be festooned in Canon logos, tie pins the lot.

I used to think it was a bit inappropriate and wondered if they were on commision!

I suppose its no worse than some spotty oik in HMV wearing a Metallica t-shirt, or whatever the kids are into now...

I'm reminded of the Stephen Fry sketch where he dumps a bin-liner full of plastic cutlery on a customer in a restaurant. The customer was the Govt Minister responsible for TV deregulation. Unfair on any manufacturer with market share (cos they must be doing summat right) but the message was along the lines of "You've got plenty to choose from, but it's all the same plastic carp".

I bought a Pentax DS body from the small, new branch (since closed) in my local town, just before the new ranges with shake reduction were due. A charming young American assistant informed me of my options and was well clued-up. They must've had only two DS bodies left in the store network, and I had to reject the first (definite signs of use).

Good luck to Jacobs, which were also founded in Leicester.

there was one in a parade opposite one of the colleges when I was there in July. It was closed, but it was a Sunday. Took this photo, not that it'd be much help in recognising it! :D

I'd guess that that is Campkins - judging by the label ^^^^^

Well I like Jessops.

I've got a lens on order with them, and some gift vouchers.

I e-mailed them asking if I could part pay with the vouchers, and they've already deducted the voucher amount from my order, and said send them in :)

It is catch 22 - most people think that Jessop's staff are misinformed idiots. To a degree some are, but I know staff in a lot of stores who are very very knowledgable and are some great photographers too. However, people surmise the same thing on every website out there so it goes on and on.....

The main branch in Glasgow has a "pro" section downstairs, I go there for two reasons - firstly it tends to be manned by members of staff who know their stuff and secondly........all the decent gear is down there :naughty:

The trouble is that Jessops have to balance between having a shop staffed with photogeeks who can scare away newbie p+s buyers with talk of f-stops and iso settings and the such and finding enough staff who will work for low wages.

Full praise for the staff at Jessops in Swansea. I called in there last week to look at some compacts, and the guy who works there was extremely helpful. He even went and fetched all his photos out to show me the quality of the one camera. Unfortunately they didn't seem to have any stock of the cameras I was actually looking for. My conclusion is that it's not the staff that are useless, but maybe that head office don't actually keep them stocked.

How often have you seen a post of "go to Jessops and have a feel, see what you like, then go and find cheaper on the net"? or words to that effect?

They get people through the doors, it wouldn't take a massive amount of effort to turn a significant number of those visitors into sales.

I can't see jessops going Canon only, it'd be a disaster. How many manufacturers of electrical goods have their own shops on the high street in most big towns? The only one I can think of is Sony and I suspect the only reason they can do this is because of their extensive product range which will appeals to all sorts of markets. If Jessops restricted their one market to one manufacturer they'd be gone within 6 months tops.

I noticed a wee side article in Amatuer Photographer this week saying that Jessops had just opened a new store in London which aims to stock every digital camera available on the market. I wonder if that includes the new 60mp Hassy - can you imagine asking one of the Saturday staff to explain why it costs the same price as a nice BMW...:naughty:
