Jessops - Idiots :)

I bought something from Jessops for the first time ever today. I've been watching BG-E2 battery grips on eBay (the old style) and they've been going for about £88 including postage.

Walked into my local Jessops (Solihull) after a clothes shopping spree, just out of interest, bought a new BG-E2 Battery grip for £89.99. Ace.

I have used jessops collect@store option quite a few times and never have a problem, I print out the page with the details and take it in, never had to use it mind you.

Just give em your name at the counter and they nip out the back and get it. job jobbed :)
Me too. I think it's one of Jessops best features, using their High Street presence and Internet presence to reinforce one another.

I popped into the Kingston branch today, looking at the 10-20. I know I`d missed the discount but wasn`t too bothered as I was going to put it on interest free. I enquired about it to be told that there is now a £30 admin charge for the credit, which wasn`t in place when I bought by DSLR from them previously.

So, bearing in mind that I can get it for £289 online - ok so I`d have to pay for it all upfront, but that wouldn`t be a problem TBH, the jessops price would be £335. Too much of a difference, so I enquired whether they`d knock £20 off.

Nope.

Oh well, another £300+ sale lost for £20......

Jessops = pillocks

I went to the same Wakefield branch as Dellipher today to view a D3, offered them my last £10 for a D3 and they said 'NO'

Lost out on my £10 they did too - another sale not going their way = pillocks

In fact, for £10 each I'd have got more cash & bought 2 !!! The Pillocks

Whether that was intentional or not sums it up completely really.
We get in **** if we sell a camera with too much discount.

Bought my 10-20 Sigma lens online from Jessops just 2 weeks ago and got the 10% off using the discount code on camerapricebuster.co.uk. Fast delivery no hassles, great lens!

They're offering some good bundle options on the 450D if anyone's interested

http://www.jessops.com/Products/Cat...l-_-eflyer_010508-_-bankholiday-_-bundle_HTML

Thats a great deal. I went into the Jessops in the Lakeside shopping centre last week just to have a look and feel of the 450d. The body + lens(e) was £599.99, I didn't buy it cos I left my CC at home so I couldn't be tempted.

Edit. Why is the name Jessops a link in my post. I don't want to advertise for them !!!!

It seems to me that it all depends on the shop you go to. And it's not just Jessops. I've found this to be the same with other multiples. PC World, Comet, Currys, and a number of photographic shops. I must say the odd Jessops I popped into seem to be reasonably professional. If you don't like the service you get then "vote with your feet"

Seems to me the online reserving at a discount that is denied over the counter is somewhat stoopid of Jessops. If a customer gets as far as the counter with goods ready to purchase, if you cannot close a sale at this stage then there isn't much hope for the business longer term. Ok, so they have shop overheads, but both options are collect at store, so what is the sense in denying one set of customers a 10% discount given to others? I just dont get it....

:agree:

PC world do a collect at store option, and even give you the web price if you order then collect at store. There is nothing special about the product you get over store product. In many cases they just take it off the shelf.

One day - mark my words , you young folk - all our stores will be in Hong Kong and everything will be ordered via the internet (except Tescos, obviously).

Jessops lost it ages ago, I wouldn't buy anything from them.
There must be some good photo retailers about, but Jessops are not one of them.

I could go on, but I feel I'm preaching to the converted,
So

DON'T BUY AT JESSOPS

You'll only encourage them. :nono:

Briefly scanning through, I can see that my experience is probably not representative.....

My very first ever trip to a camera shop was on Saturday - I only wanted a camera bag - but I have to say that I've rarely encountered more courteous "nothing too much trouble" service anywhere. I don't just seethe inwardly when I receive less than satisfactory service as that is the route to stomach ulcers and does nothing to enlighten the retailer in question. No, I write "educative" letters demanding apologies and freebies. I do however give credit where it's due and send plaudits as appropriate too.

I was socialising some rescue dogs and waltzed in with 4 greyhounds on leads which I really had no right to do. No questions were asked, no eyebrows raised. The shop was full (of much better bet customers than me, I'm sure) yet the assistant brought every single bag from the shelves for me to view on the counter. I really do mean every single bag too. He gave me tips on using my own kit, showed me how to partition the bags differently and so on.

When it came to paying, the £30 bag I'd chosen was wrongly priced and should've been £75. Manager called, no quibble, £30 paid with thanks. Maybe going in mobhanded with lanky dogs is the key to getting customer satisfaction in Jessops?

I'm absolutely brand new to all of this so my experience might have been entirely different were I buying something I needed expert help on.

It was the Leicester branch btw.

I have to agree to a certain extent... I think a lot depends on the staff at the store. I've had excellent service from one of the Jess0ps on Monks Cross in York, a young lady called Stephanie was really helpful in there, nothing was too much trouble and I really enjoyed my shopping experience.

Contrast that to a visit to the Harrogate store... I asked a question.. got told "No" and that was the end of that! I walked out, telling someone on the way out they're better off going to Bass & Bligh :D

I popped into my local branch yesterday as I NEED but dont have the dosh yet ...a sigma 10-20 and thought Id see if they had one to try out. I think it was £304 and to price match to £289 he told me to go to a main Jessops in London :nono:

Apart from that the guy was really helpful and knowledgable which was a complete shock as I usually get the spotty goth with one brain cell and as I know next to nothing and need someone with at least some idea I took total advantage!

Anyway....an hour later I let him put back everything in his display case

I bought a 10-20 from Jessops Meadowhall (Sheffield) yesterday for £274 (using the LENS10 code above).

Bought online, with instore pick up, lass went into the back, picked up my lens, opened it to show it was all there, paid for it, and I was out in less than 5 minutes.

Jobs a goodun. Even Onestop only have it £10ish cheaper!

i'm quite lucky as my Jessops will price match RGB tech which is 2 doors away, and just happen to be one of the cheapest camera shops, but RGB don't offer interest free, i'm going to buy a 100-400 on Tuesday, i have the cash but i'm going to take advantage of the interest free from Jessops and earn the interest myself :D

You got the Canon one then! Im in two minds to right to Jessops and ask why my Nikon is £20 dearer.

As many people will know, I work for Jessops.
I have no loyalty in the company whatsoever, and I couldn't give a stuff if they went bankrupt tomorrow (so long as I could get an equally enjoyable job somewhere else!) but I do not like the generalisation that is made of Jess0ps staff.
I'm a weekend worker, but I know more about the cameras than 98% of the customers that come in.

Yet I continually get bad mouthed by people asking for someone, and I quote, who "isn't just a saturday worker and actually knows what they're talking about," simply because I'm 17, I have long blonde hair and I wear skinny jeans to work.

I get really offended by it. So I open up the cabinet for them to look at the camera, if they ask a question, I baffle them with technical terms and specifications, and when they order my to explain I will simply go into more detail.

So, for those of you who think Jessops is a ridiculous company with ludicrous policies (such as you can't do a collect at store with insurance vouchers, god knows why), you are pretty much correct.
But for those of you who aren't ignorant, you'll realise that Jessops is a company that has to pay for many staff, shops, and various other services. Hence why they have policies in place (such as not taking £50 off the camera just because the customer has asked for it, since they would lose more money than if they didn't make the sale).

And I really don't like the generalisation of the staff. I find it offensive.
How would you like it if you were a member of the police force and I said all police officers were fat, useless pigs with nothing better to do than argue with youths?
Sure, there are a few fat police officers that pick on innocent teenagers (such as myself), but to say that they're all fat useless pigs is a huge insult.

I didn't generalise, as with any large company, there are idiots, there will always be stupid/ignorant/not knowledgable staff when a company gets to a certain size.

Sadly, those that have a bad experience will shout 10 times louder about it than those that receive good service, hence the reason that staff all get tarred with the same brush :)

Don't worry, just how your comments weren't directed at me, my comments weren't directed at you :)

Its quite funny though, a man came in today insisting we showed him the Canon 70-300 f2.8

I told him no such lens existed. He assured me it did.
I said, "there is a canon 70-200 f2.8 but canon don't make a 70-300 f2.8"
He said, "fine, fine, then show me the 100-400 f2.8"
I sighed, and said, "Sir, they don't make one of those either."
and he muttered under his breath, "idiots." and then said "fine, do you sell second hand lenses?"
and we replied, "no, unfortunately not sir"
he said, "its just this 70-300 f2.8 is so good nobody wants to sell it on ebay or anything"
I chuckled and said "yeah probably!"

I personally can't complain about the staff in my local Jessops in Sheffield City Centre. I only used Meadowhall yesterday because they had it in stock.

If I take in Medium format film to be developed I've shot during the day they'll always take it out of my camera using the dark box without a bat of an eyelid. And before someone asks why I don't I use a more reliable processor - I shoot on crap Russian cameras so it makes no odds to me! :P

Ooh, they take the 120 out for you? Thats very helpful of them!
We only have one staff member who does that but she does it outside of work.

You're very lucky because normally its something we have to send off for!

For what its worth, I also just bought a Sigma 10-20 from my local Jessops, used collect @store and it was totally painless.

Walked in, the chap asked for my surname and I was walking out with my lens within 3 mins. Thats my kind of shopping...

I have always found the Jessops which is at a nearby town to me very helpful. When I bought my Canon Ixus 60 from there the chap who served me had loads of time for my daft questions & did not put me under any pressure to buy. I have since been back there to browse dslr cameras, again no pressure to buy.

Going off topic, I was recently browsing the dslr cameras in a very well known high street chain which also sells tv's, computers, washing machines, etc. I was aware that there were two staff members talking to each other just behind me. While I was browsing, I heard a third voice boom out, "I hope you two realise that your monthly bonus is over there!". Immediatly afterwards, one of the sales staff asked me if I needed any help.

I turned around & replied very loudly to the third member of staff, "Dont you mean could you see if that person would like any advice rather than treating me as your cash cow!".

I then headed for the exit pronto.
