Jessops hiring equipment

Quick comparison:

Nikon 24-70 is £45.60 per day from Jessops, Lensesforhire is £55 for 3 days.

It's a very expensive alternative.

I wonder if the trade-in gear they buy at cheaper prices is what they're renting out?
(link won't load for me?)

Might be handy for an emergency if they have the gear at there and then

Can't help feeling that would be most unlikely ... I checked the rental charge for a 600mm lens, you couldn't even buy one in store!

One aspect of the market they may have covered here is rental of none canon or Nikon mount systems as all the rental companies I've ever checked out have only covered these two...where as a cursory glance shows that Jessops will also at least be renting Fuji mount lens too

SRS,

rent Pentax lenses and bodies, one of the few places which do. Must admit don't know of anywhere else that rents out X Mount.

I got the email too. Obviously it's very interesting. But I've got to admit I can't understand how Jessops intend to make the service work.

Obviously the economics of a hire operation very much favour holding the equipment in a central warehouse. And Jessops seem to be doing that; based on my exploration of their stock availability, they don't seem holding any hire stocks in their branches, not even potentially popular items like 24-70/2.8s and 70-200/2.8s.

But that means that, even when customers want to collect it from the store, the hire equipment has to be sent out from the central warehouse. That costs money, and it means the service isn't particularly responsive. You need to plan a day or two ahead, and you have to pay for delivery, which negates the potential benefits to Jessops of having its branch network.

Still, anything which makes hiring equipment seem like a routine option is to be welcomed (by me at least). I hope they do it well.

This was never meant to be any kind of highlighting a service over yours or any other one, so I hope it didn't come across that way. I did notice that they included Fuji lenses and confess that this was of most interest to me as I was thinking of changing from Canon to Fuji, but I don't have the opportunity to get a loan of the Fuji kit to see how I get on with the fancy viewfinder. I haven't read the details of the scheme, but it sounds from what you are saying that I'll not be able to get the bus into town, pick up the kit and use it all day the next time the sun comes out, so I agree that this would seem to limit the scheme. Ah well, looks like the Canon will be soldiering on a bit longer.
