Just got back from jessops in Croydon after having to return as when i got back i found that the box had been opened and the battery was missing!!!

Ok they were very sorry and gave me a new battery so all is well.

I get home to find that the memory card they sold me for the Canon 40d was the wrong one. They sold me an SD card and the camera takes a Compact Flash card:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

I thought these people are supposed to know that they are doing, it's not like they have loads of different DSLR cameras to know. I spent £1117 with them today and although it's not the end of the world :D it does put a grey cloud over my entry into the hobby.

But.. I'll get me a new card tomorrow and then I can start playing YAY!

I asked a guy in Jessops for a 52mm circular polariser once. He came back with a puzzled look and said "is it this?" handing me a 55mm UV filter.

That's unlucky - they are meant to know what they are doing, but unfortunately they are a retail chain, so will never (IMO) be as knowledgeable as say, a "mom and pop" shop.

Don't let this ruin your entry to the hobby though - their incompetence does not make photography any worse, just try and avoid them in future - online ordering is normally cheaper anyway!!!

Good luck with the new kit :D

I brought my D300 from Jessops in Purley Way, Croydon and they couldn't have been more helpful.

They didn't give you a new box to replace the opened one? they just gave you a battery? to be honest if that was me I would want a whole new un opened box!

That's a good point.... Didn't think of that... Might be worth, when you go back with the card problem insisting that they give you a new unopened box.

Id want an "untampered" box too....

I suggest you go back yet again and get caught up in traffic on the Purley Way!

My local jessops are not that great but if I go on a weekday, I tend to get someone who knows more than I do (thats not hard I know :))

Although im a bit far away to use it now, the Jessops in Colliers Wood was always very helpful and actually knew what they were talking about.

I guess its the same anywhere really, take PC World, they also get a bad rep much the same as Jessops, even though alot of the people who work there dont really care or know that much, there are the people who do know what they are talking about, you just gotta find them!

When I got my 40D from Jessops (Loughborough) they unsealed and opened the box in front of me and checked everything was inside and let me examine the camera etc.
Very happy with the service I get there.

I think it's a cause of "buyer beware".

Forgive me but I don't know your own knowledge of what you were buying. However, from my own perspective, I always check everything before I leave the store when making a major purchase.

Still, no harm done eh? Enjoy the camera.

:agree: why has it been opend?

Me to, i would be wondering if it was ex display, so the first thing to do when you get your memory card is check the actuation's.

It was opened because they nicked the battery for the one that was in the window for a demo, so i suspect they couldn't be bothered to look in the orig box for the display camera battery!!??!!

Anyhoo it's all under guarantee so if anythings amis I'll be straight back there.

I'm still very keen but this wasn't a great start, he he.

Jessops can't be any more incompetent at selling cameras than I am at using them. But there is a chance of me improving.... I hope...

Mine had been opened when I bought it at AJPurdy.

I think what they do is nick the kit lens out of the kit box and sell it separately and sell the bodies to people who onnly want a body.

I wish i could have a new body, mines far too large :D :D :D :D :D

That's a possibility - but then the person buying the body would have a box with "DXX Kit" on it and a load of space where the lens should be... The person buying the lens would get a plain white box...

If you're paying retail, I would be tempted to insist on a new, unopened box - after all having the right box can affect resale value, or at least ability to sell.

I was informed by Jessops yesterday that "you don't put heads on monopods"..... An when I asked how I could utilise a quick release system on it he couldn't answer.

I find it very frustrating that I, as a novice in photography, have greater project knowledge than somebody employed to sell the stuff. Jessops really need to revise their sales & marketing strategy, they're already losing money and p155ing off customers isn't the greatest of policies.

Jessops are hit and miss,
Some staff are good some staff don't know and don't care.
My D60 Kit was fully sealed thankfully.

my d50 kit bought just over a year ago from jessops in reading was fully sealed and the guy who sold it to me let me play with 3 other cameras before i was sold on a nikon . d300 coming soon from jessops the staff there are great and know thier stuff i dont go in on saturday mornings though ,the 16 year old is a bit useless

I did! And it was only 2 days after the 40d first came on the market August 2007!

hmm bit suspect you spent £1100 in a shop and didn,t check what you went home with :bonk: most new cameras dont come with a memory card so you need to buy one my d50 takes sd my new d300 takes cf ive already ordered
my cf cards from else where as jessops card prices are just silly

I've given up with my local Jessops...

Me: Hi, do you stock any of the Cokin P-series filters?

Jessops girl: The what? What's Cokin?

:bang:

Now I can see why Jessops is going down the pan really . .

as said jessops are very hit and miss the 1 in norwich is pants they had 4 staff walking round like zombies and 1 member actually serving i ended up walking out after half an hour of being second in the que but in kings lynn they are great and really nearly know their stuff

I went into Jessops to buy a grey card and the girl who served me didn't have a clue what it was....after explaining she still didn't have a clue.....so I gave up and went elsewhere...

There used to be 2 in bromley, both with a couple of good staff and a couple of bad.
Now there is one, as far as i know it is quite good, however i only went to pick up an item i reserved online!

I've given up with my local Jessops...

yup, same here

when I was looking to get my first DSLR the nearest camera shop to me was Jessops in Sutton, Surrey - so thats where I headed for first. Was absolutely astounded at how poor the service was that I got. He couldn't really answer the questions I had, and certainly didn't offer any more help or suggestions in regards to whether or not I was going down the right route. I even made a point of asking what the alternatives were, to which he ansered "it depends on what you want". Well, being rather new to this, I didn't have a clue - surely you'd expect to find someone in a camera shop to know and make suggestions??? Needless to say, I gave up in there - ended up finding a great deal for a D50 plus 2 kit lenses plus bag and card in PC World of all places!

I later tried the Sutton Jessops again for a filter or two, and again got the very same unhelpful service. Doubt very much I'll try them again for anything.

Gotta say though, the level does very depend on who you get to serve you. I got my monopod from the larger of the two Jessops shops in Inverness. The guys in there were fantastic, and didn't mind one little bit that I had them get 3 or 4 different 'pods out before I wnet and decided on the one they'd originall brought out. Another occaision saw me in there to try a VR version of my 70-300 - again, it was absolutely no trouble for them
