Been new to DSLR photography, whilst browsing in jessops earlier, I was told they offer a 1 day beginners course, which starts in York in a few weeks.

Focuses on settings, what makes a good photograph and wht goes into achieving this, it says it cost £119

Are these types of courses worth it? Has anyone done it? If so what were your thoughts :)

I'd get a good photography book from your local library, read that, take some shots, post them here for critique and advice, and put the money towards some more kit.

Thanks for responses, I do have a book from the library which I am reading as much as I can, (also one for my PS CS5),

I will be away with the wife and kids near Clumber park soon so I am looking at capturing them and some landscapes whilst away, so if all goes to plan I will post some photos up for critique.

I might look at the local meets, in a little while and see what it's about, might not be able to make this one though, but thanks for the heads up

I'll have a look through that too:)

Have a look at Groupon I have seen them on there cheap

It sounds like your already doing the reading / learning side of things, I'd agree with the advice in the posts above, take some shots and get to know your camera and your abilities - post some shots up on here and ask for constructive advice on how you could (if possible) improve the shot - could be as simple as a tighter crop to make all the difference.

Do you know anyone who is into photography - try to arrange a few hours with them - I learnt a lot of the basics from my Father in Law, when we were away on holiday some years ago - he's very old school, used to develop his own photos etc and not part of the spray shooting and hope you get a shot... I'm able to help my daughter now, although I suspect she'll be helping me before I know it

Best advice I got - Enjoy it and if you are happy with your shot - thats all that matters

I'll keep on reading the book(s) website, looking at people photos composition and exif data (to learn what settings work for them, on here

Get a few more photos together, edit them up and see what the TP collective think, or how much you laugh:lol:

As well as a local Community College look out for Adult Learning courses too. Learning from the internet is one thing, and for some people that works fine, as can buying a book and learning from that for some people.

Some people like to be shown and guided. I must show a vested interest because I work for my local Adult Learning Service, and most people come to the camera courses because they want to learn with someone showing and guiding them through the subject. They also want to ask a person a questions face to face. A lot of the people, beginners in particular, are making little use of the internet, so for them it is a route that they have not even considered.

With regards to the Jessops 1 day courses, for the same cost I know Liverpool Adult Learning Service offer a 10 week course 25 hour courses for a similar cost. ;) I know not everyone has the time to make that
commitment, but for some it's better to work at a slower pace, and have the ability to come back week after week with any problems that may occur, and to reinforce learning over a number of weeks, and also be able to ask someone face to face any queries. Works for some people.

I was interested to see what Jessops deliver on a one day course though, and I picked their leaflet a couple of weeks ago to try and see what they were offering. The leaflet was a bit vague, but looking on their website they seem to offer a lot in one day from what I've read. They only offer their courses in a few locations around the country, which may not be convenient for most people I think.

You should learn in the way that suites you, be that books, magazines, DVD's, internet, courses or whatever, and in any combination that works for you. ;)

Often a local pro photographer will run workshops or 1-2-1 sessions, try Google for 'Photography Workshops' in your area - this type of assistance can prove very useful as you can get help specific to your situation.

I am finding i am looking more toward the internet, be that on here, or other websites including You Tube, for some reason I seem to be able to watch FroKnowsPhoto you tube videos and sit there and listen and watch all the way through, whist reading a inch think book is hard work for me

that's one of the reasons why i was intrigued by the workshop type scenario

Ive done the Jessops 1 day course as im new to photography/DSLR full stop and found it very useful, however ive also just done a college course at worcester (photography for beginners) and for just an extra £20 this was far better and i would recommend going on the college course over the 1 day jessop course, buts that just my opinion only... Good luck and enjoy

I did a 10 week course provided by my local adult education!
It was 2 hours every Thursday night for 10 and the guy teaching is the local press tog!
Cost £50 absolute bargain an i learnt loads and met some like minded individuals.
I enjoyed it so much did it again the year after and may do it again when it runs again starting in September!

These sound great value, will have to have a look in to them at some point

Sounds like a awful lot to cover in the space of just 1 day. I'd follow the advice of others.

Did you not find camera club a bit snobby.

Might give it another go!
It's a photographic society, and that just put me off from the start!
First time I went they were less than friendly and I'm a salesman so mix very easily!
Been looking at doing a City an Guilds but to be honest looking at the syllabus don't think I'll learn a great deal, just end up with a formal qualification!

see if you can find out some more clubs there are 5 with in 10 miles off where i live i heard lots of good things about the one i go too and was told some bad stuff about some off the other ones ask on here about some clubs in your area im sure there will be others :)
