I have a Jessops 360AFD flash that won't fire in test mode or on the camera. It turns on and the ready light shows, but the test/ready button won't work and it doesn't fire when on any mode on the camera. All of the buttons / modes etc work and you can here the flash head zoom when changing the zoom position.

Any ways to fault find this or test it? Is it the bulb / flash itself? Any DIY sites for fixing a flash?

Cheers

AFAIK, flashguns can be a pretty dangerous place to go poking around inside. If it's under warranty, I'd take it back to Jessops and get them to fix/replace it.

Not sure about the Jessops flashes, but it can be expensive to have them fixed or have bulbs replaced. You might be better to bite the bullet and get a new one, then sell yours as not working on eBay, they often go for a ridiculous amount considering.

The first 360AFD i recieved had exactually the same symptions, i phoned jessops and they said unless its in warranty theirs nothing they can do with them.
Pretty high voltage at the bulb so wouldnt want to be poking around inside my self either.

If you dont want to get an idea what it feels like to be hit with a taser it's probably wise not to attempt a home repair.

OK, i got the taser feeling.. took it apart last night and got a couple of good shocks.. still have two white dots on my hand where it made contact. Although I did find a broken wire behind the bulb, so will solder it on tonight and see if that sorts it..

Well, as long as you don't have any batteries in it, you should have drained the capacitors with a couple of good shocks so it should be a bit more benign tonight.

Why didn't you video the procedure? It might have made a good YouTube vid - man vs electricity :D

Brave man, i`ll be knowing who to contact next time i get a duff one!

hi Adam,
just received one of these myself, have had it apart cannot see any duff connection on initial inspection, can you shed any more light (excuse the pun) on what connection it was on the one you had. Other than it not flashing all other functions appear to be working, as yours was.

cheers

Mine just happened to have the same symptons as yours and found out the bulb blew wednesday night (and I've had it for 15 months), I went into Jessops yesterday and they gave me a new one without asking questions. It's worth a try :)

very lucky man. Known to be lethal. Or are you like Homer Simpson with the beer cans?

Hopefully you learned your lesson, although I have the worrying feeling you haven't......

I have a jessops flash that's knackered in TTL, but works in slave and manual fine, works well with my 430ex set with two shoot through's.

The red wire had come undone behind the bulb. So the top part of the flash..

I have a Jessops 360AFDC that is also faulty, Ready/Test goes red but no flash on or off the my 400D - I can hear the motor working. I was going to stick on E-bay until I read this post as such I'm going to open and take a look (it hasn't fired in over a month now so hope the charge has gone and no shocks) I want to open the flash and check for this red wire (or any others) that are disconnected but how do you open the flash??? cant see any screws except on the bottom half of the flash. Reading the other posts its the top half that needs to be opened.

from memory pull the circular rubber covers off the hinge and also take the front diffuser out, there should be screws underneath this..
