Jessops 300D/AFD for £30ish - any good?

Thinking of buying one for my D40X. Does it fire burst flashes so that i could take 2 or 3 shots of one car at a rally?

Another newbie here ... I bought that flashgun a few months ago for use with Canon 400D. Only got around to actually usuing it yesterday and worked fine but after turning off the flash and camera for a while ansd starting all back up, it no longer seems to fire at all. The Ready light is Red and the ETTL light is Orange. Ok light isnt lit. Also tried it with a 40D this morning but no joy!

Any ideas if I'm doing something wrong or is the flashgun just broken?
I changed batteries too, just in case!

Any help/advice much appreciated

I picked one up today from Jessops in Chester and, for £30, it's pretty good! Feels a bit plasticky but it's much better than my 400d on-board flash. Thanks for the link!

The reason for the flimsy hotshoe foot is exactly what you said - If you drop the camera, the flash foot will break away. This is considered cheaper than ripping a hole in the pentaprism of you camera.

They do work on the D40 as i have one and it lists on box as being compatible with D200, D80, D70, D70s, D50, D40, D40x.

I agree - got mine on a D60, not used it too much yet, need to some help to get the best results! (How i found this thread!) i was looking for tips!

Does anybody know whether the 300AFD works with a Canon 1000D ?

i am pretty sure it will, the hotshoe configuration on these is pretty standard.

I have the 360AFD version which is a good bit more expensive but has a lot more control on it.

Thanks! I suppose the easiest way to check would be to take my camera down with me

I can't see any reason why not, btw the code Jessops5
will get you err, err £1.70 off the price online - every little helps, as they say at Tesco :)

Thankyou and thankyou. £1.70 goes a long way for a student soap dodger like me!

can you get a cable for this flash to use off camera? an ebay linky would be ace if possible aint got a clue what to search for.

thanks guys and gals

Does anyone know if I reserve an item for tomorrow (Sunday), can I wait until Monday to collect it? As far as I can see, I reserve it on my credit card and can then pick it up at my leisure but thought I'd better check.

I have gone onto Jessops to see about buing one, and they seem to only have the Canon AFD version of this on their website now :shake: ?

Shorty i have just bought one new off ebay 300afd for my D60 was going to PM you the Link but you have no pm option. and i dont want to get into bother as unsure if i am allowed to post it on here

Think jessops have stopped making/selling the £30 one, and only a few shops have the canon/nikon ones left.

Oh mine arrived this morning off ebay, it was posted tuesday so great delivery time to.
Brand new and works fine, the last time i looked the guy had about 9 left. worked out about £40.50 with Rec P&P

I was obviously selling them far too cheap on here @ £16.50 delivered

well you obviously have sold out! or you would have seen this thread a long before now and have been selling your wares i am sure ;)

as i only got my camera on the 21st this month I had no previous need for a flashgun. and yes £16.50 WAS good price but no good to me at that price if you have not actually got any available.

I did see the thread ;) £40 sounds very expensive though, the dedicated Canon version didn't even cost that in Jessops

suppose that depends on who is buying, the nearest jessops brand flashgun for nikon is £99

The jessops 300AFD discontinued for nikon but was roughly £65 (the canon version was always cheaper but irrelevant as i have nikon) i know then it fell in price to £33. but looking at it like this
I was happy to pay £34 +P&P for a brand new one unused delivered to my door, i felt it was worth it, and was affordable for my circumstances.

Should this fire a preflash to meter the scene?

I have it attached to my 400D but at the moment no preflash fires and as it's metering for ambient light it produces really slow shutter speeds indoors and only works effectively in manual mode. Can anyone advise if this is normal operation?

Ordered mine yesterday [finally!] will hopefully have it in time for Wednesday when I can get some outdoor test shots of some doggies[even though I have no clue how this thing works etc.]

mine came nextday so good delivery time, although i have noticed from looking the other day his prices have gone up. As for use, its just as easy as attach and shoot, its got no real setting as such, just make sure your shutter speed is at the correct sync speed for your camera, and have fun lol

I have this and a great value way to improve on the on-board flash.

I have been using a make-shift bubble wrap diffuser, does anyone know of/recommend a more professional looking one that will fit?

Cheers

Has anybody used one of these on a 450d with an ebay ttl cable, I just received a cable today and whilst the ttl led lights up after pressing the shutter button the flash isn't firing?

Well I've took the cable apart and it seems like the diode on the main post is dead, looks like I'll have to get soldering.

I had thought the price had gone up :(

Noob question, what do you mean by 'set the shutter speed' and how do you do so/whats recommended etc.
I've only just been attaching and shooting[and adjusting the zoom thingy on it and the the angle I may want the flash to bounce in]

i'm glad you asked that !! i was wondering the same thing , got the flash yesterday so haven't had much time to play yet

for me i have a D60 the flash sync speed is 1/200 (check your manual for your cameras sync speed),unless your using it in full automatic mode it will probably do it all for you.
i am also new to this so i may be making a complete fool of myself lol
i thought if you have the shutter speed to fast the flash wont fire...oh my i could be wrong let me go a read up on it  i have not used my camrera in automatic mode. so i play with the setting until i get it right lol

Oh right, I'll take a look.
I have the camera constantly on Aperture Priority, so semi-auto, not once been on auto, so I dunno if that is an easier thing or not :lol::suspect:
