Yes
I see Jessops are doing their 300 flashgun for £30 (£34 for the nikon/canon AFD versions £60 for the Sony version though).

I cant see from the pics and info what manual settings this has - I'm thinking for remote flash.

Goodish buy or should I look to the HK suppliers of the vivitars?

I got one for my FUji S9600 and it has made a big improvement over the on board flash. I still don;t quit eunderstand how all the settings work, but it does the job.

I used a discount code so got it for less - check the shopping pages on here for one.

WHen I asked the advise was to go for it, it's half price, and for that money you can;t go wrong. ANd I beleive JEssops have a 30 day trial period....

The settings are:

1-5.3m @ f5.6
1-7.5m @ f4.0
1-11m @ f2.8
1-15m @ f2.0

four different options, pick the one closest to the aperture setting, bit of angle for the bounce and I'm away.

thanks for the link going to the store tommorow hopefully get some more info on it has i dont like my onboard flash...

do jessops let you try it if you brought your cam to the store?

Yes, jessops will usually (with bodies and lenses anyway) let you try gear before you buy. I'd take some AA batteries along though just to be on the safe side ;)

Can you let me know what you think Simeon?

Thanks Lawrie - how are you finding it?

If you buy on the web (with collect in store) I think you can get 3% quidco as well as the discounts.

yeah sure will do mate going up about lunch time so will let you know sometime after that.

thanks sim

edit: google results/reviews are not promising but for £30:shrug:

there aren't any controls on the canon version, it's all just TTL. I bought one for my 5D because it doesn't have a built-in flash so it's basically "to get me going" mainly as fill-flash outdoors. Not used it in anger yet though.

it means the camera and flash talk and decide on output levels and stuff based on the light coming in through the lens (TTL).

I got one a couple of weeks ago for £35 for my D40 and it works fine.
Battery life is good as well ive used mine a fair bit and i havent changed them yet.

Good thanks. I will try and sort a decent pic shortly. Although I must say now that I am still trying to work out the settings and the best tilt angle, so don't expect the world. 100 times better than the onboard though. bigger flash, less time between shots, brighter pics, less/no red eye.

I think whilst 3 is not as sharp as it could be, you can see how the flash has only lit the forground, and has not lit the room through the door. It was light enough for that to come through, so I foudn it interesting to get a shot like that. No idea if it has a use going forward.

Thw first shot is a family friend, and I just thought the balance of light worked well. THe flash would have been bounced off the ceiling. Again very different photo to the on board would have produced.

The second just gives an impression of how well the background can be lit in this relatively small space. HTH

Jessops are still seeling these for £34 for Canon and Nikon. I just picked one up from my local. Wish I'd known earlier in the week, as I could've done with one last night...

So, the Canon one doesn't allow for manual control?
Nope
As far as I know the bBest you get is flash exposure compensation from the camera - can anyone who owns this flash confirm?

I have one in my hand which I collected at lunchtime and the only controls on the flash unit are the on/off switch and the test fire button :)

At £33 (with the jessops5 discount code) I felt it was worth a punt, I'm brand new to flash photography (and pretty new to dSLRs) so its a good way to play as far as I'm concerned :)

MB, that was my thought too...

I bought one at the weekend for my D90 but i have found that my on-board flash seems to pop up sometimes to.

Is there a setting wrong in my camera settings that is making this happen.

I was using it second curtain last night Matt and it was working fine. I wonder if it's just not charging up from the first flash, before the shutter opens and the second flash at the end of the exposure

I was running at 2.5 second exposures with the 300AFD and it was firing on second curtain. I was using fresh batteries.

I've got a 300AFD Nikon fit on the way, hopefully here by tomorrow, I'll tell you what i think when it arrives ;)

Which reminds me, AA batteries! must get!:exit:

Don't use the auto-modes.

Alrighty then, got this in the post yesterday, and for 30 odd, im pleasantly surprised.

Admittedly this is my first flashgun ever, and, bought it because the popup does the usual "haha i washed everything out thats near, and now you cant see whats behind that because its do freaking dark"

Calm... :)

Anyway, predictably, it feels plasticity, but its not a bad thing, it feels reasonably strong, while it still feels pretty light weight.

The AF light, is down right pathetic, and, you dont actually see it through the viewfinder, as its probably not lined up properly

It does do a good job of warning people they are about to have a flash go off in their face

Now, somthing that worries me a bit is the hot shoe mount.

Basicly, its plastic, thin, and feels like its made from the same stuff as the hot shoe cover that came with your camera. And, i reckon if i bashed the flash hard enough, it would rip clean off

Second worry is the battery door, there's a bit of a knack to opening it, dont force it, as again, you'd probably snap it off, as the hinge is cheap plastic.

Wouldnt want to have to change this things batteries when time is tight :shake:

Zoom is a manual affair with 85/50/35/28 stops on the sliding head

As far as settings go, you've got on, off, and a test button
No LCD, dosent need one. Test button is to easily pressed when taking the flash off the camera, as my retina found out the hard way

Well that was a bit longer than planned, but, hope it helps

I was considering buying one of these and using it off camera with some ND gels to stop down the output; cheers for the insight, it's helped me make up my decision!

First time you flip up that head and bounce flash is a liberating feeling :p

has anyone got one of these with a 400d ?

i just phoned my local jessops to see if they had one in stock, and they told me they dont make them anymore (guessed that as they are half price) they have none in stock and it wouldnt have worked with my camera anyway ?

i was wanting to get it and set it up on a slave trigger anyway, and when i looked on the internet, it says i can buy and collect in store at my local after 9.45 am tommorow morning, are they telling me a few porkies to get me to spend more money ? or will it really not work with a 400d ?

Thanks

i used to have one and the batteries didnt last very long at all in mine, and i was using duracell extra batteries. also i thought it felt quite sturdy for how cheap it looks, but i would definately invest another couple of quid in a diffuaser for it.

Minor point, if anyone is thinking of picking up the Nikon equivalent, they don't work with D40 D40x or D60 cameras.

Cheers,
James

Has anyone used one of these work on a Canon G9? They don't list it so I guess not!

If anyone else is wondering in the future, I went to Jessops and it does work with the G9.

Works fine with my 400d.

Thanks buddy, They even list it as fine with the 400d on their website, god knows why their sales person told me on the phone they didnt have any and it wouldnt work.

maybe half of that was true, as i ordered one online for in store collection, i was at work so my missus kindly picked it up for me, and i got home to be greeted by a 360afd !!!! one happy chappy here !

They do work on the D40 as i have one and it lists on box as being compatible with D200, D80, D70, D70s, D50, D40, D40x.

pretty sure its the canon 40d it doesnt work with.

just to be clear, my missus didnt pay exta for the 360afd, thats just what they gave her when i ordered and paid for the 300afd !!!

newbie here, so apologise for stupid question, I have bought one of these cheapy flashes , when i attach it to my camera, do I have to do anything in the settings ?
Don't want it flying off if the on camera flash comes up
