Was in jessops today ,having a wee harmless look around ,you know,as you do :D. Spotted the flash with a very keen price £25 ,i've very little experience regarding using flash photography ,so i thought what the hell, and bought it . Anyways to save me a bit of typing i found this link about a chappy with the exact same problem as me.Have a wee read of this ..http://community.dcmag.co.uk/forums/thread/886330.aspx

Anybody help :)

A couple of thoughts....

1. The 450D is not included in the list of compatible cameras on the Jessops website and, in fact, the 40D is specifically excluded, so are you sure the 450D is intended to work with this flash unit? Since the website makes no remark about the 450D, one way or the other, who is to know?

2. To use the flash will require the shutter speed to be no faster than the max sync speed of 1/200. If your camera settings have a shutter speed faster than this in order to achieve a correct exposure (e.g. 1/1000), when you turn the flash on it will force the camera to 1/200. That may cause an overexposure of the ambient light on its own, never mind any extra light from the flash. What are your settings for shutter, aperture and ISO with the flash turned off? What do they become when you turn it on, if they change at all?

3. Even though the flash may have no controls on it, the camera should surely have a Flash Exposure Compensation control (FEC). This should allow you to dial the flash strength up or down to control the flash output. What is your current FEC setting? Can you adjust it?

I don't have a 450D, only 30D/40D/50D, so I am making some assumptions here about the features of the 450D..

Normally if i'm on the look out for a piece of kit i do a lot of research into it,i don't normally like jessops prices ,i couldn't resist it.In the Externel flash C. Fn setting ,it says "this menu cannot be displayed .Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off ,flash was on at the time... Educated guess ,incompatible flash . The most annoying bit about this ,i asked the guy in the shop THREE!!!! :bang: times if the flash was compatible with the 450D .Should not have listen to the git .I should've guessed his advise was wrong ,especially after trying to tell me the 450 has a crop factor of 1.5 :suspect:

Jessops are fine to buy from, as long as you just go in to buy and don't take advice from (most of) the staff - the manager of my local store told me that the 50mm f/1.8 Nikon lens I had on my D80 couldn't possibly work as the D80 didn't have an af motor...

What hope do the rest of the staff have if that's the level of knowledge of someone whose risen to the level of manager? :bang:

Ive just bought one of these flashes, albeit for a 400D
however, there is a compatiblity sheet in the box and it says
that its compatible with the following:
5D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, 400D, 40D & 450D (not sure this includes the 5D mkII - i guess probably not)

works fine with my 400D, i know this doesn't help you much

Thanks for all the input, taking it back tomorrow ,also taking camera as well ,just in case i'm missing something ,i'll make a point to speak to the elderly gent whom i sort of know (i've spoken to him a few times whilst at MX meets ) ,i'll get him to try it out.If it's not right ,that'll be a bit more cash towards a new/SH lens :D

They did give you the right one didn't they? The Nikon and Canon versions have the same product number I think....
