Jenson Button agrees to join McLaren

Its F1 means nothing till its in ink on paper, and then its just a case of how many millions it takes them to buy their way out.

thats a bit pre-emptive of the guardian tbh if hes not signed anything yet, although it does seem more likely now that merc have stated they would like 2 germans.

not sure how button would fair with hamilton as a teammate as i personally think that hamilton is a much better driver and this could knock him for six, expecially given that maclaren is very much team lewis and i cant see that changing any time soon regardless of whether button has the number 1 on his car and lewis has number 2.

we'll have to see whether he actually signs the deal or not (and whether he retains his drive at merc if a maclaren deal falls through) its not within the relms of fantasy that mclaren could actually sign kimi, and that merc go and sign rosberg and heidfeld, so button could potentially be in trouble, we all hope not but it could happen, especially given that brawn/merc is now majority owned by germans who are keen to promote german drivers and not completely controlled by his mate ross anymore

Joining McLaren may well destroy Jenson's career. Hamilton is a world class, exceptional talent. Whatever you think of his attitude and activities off track, in the car he is phenomenally fast. Button is not in the same league. Let's not forget that he was once comprehensively outpaced by Giancarlo Fisichella in the same equipment.

I'm gonna love seeing them in the same car, I've always rated button highly and this will either confirm it or show me for the idiot. Hamilton is class, no two ways about that.

Hamilton will destroy Button. Should be fun to watch

Heard channel 5 news today say that McLaren has bought Brawn.. I knew ITN were crap, but didnt know they were that crap. Or maybe the news reader cant read.

You do know that he's won the championship do you? :bonk:

Of course, and I think hes one of the top 5 drivers out there. He may be one of the top two drivers out there. That's what I want to find out and is what I think will be revealed at McLaren. I did say I have always rated him.

As of right now I think the two best drivers in the sport are Hamilton and Alonso, with Vettel and Button equal third.

id like to agree with you gary, whilst its great that button won the championship and hes certainly more than competent as a driver i dont put him in the same league as hamilton, alonso or kimi.

Jo Seward has commented on the guardian article stating that alan henry who wrote it is usually right about all things mclaren

I think it all depends on how good next years Mclaren will be. Jenson proved to be best when his Brawn car was the best of the field at the beginning of this years season.
But now he has become champion, perhaps that will make him up his game and remain competitive to defend his title should the Mclaren not prove to be the best car.
I know Cosworth is no longer the same Cosworth we had last time in F1 but I expect them to be very competitive engines and can see Williams returning to form.

Agree with you

It may well destroy his career aswell
Could be interesting Jenson having Number 1, Lewis number 2 on their cars but half way through the season Jenson becomes a supporting number 2 to Lewis being number 1

i forecast that Lewis will keep accidentally getting in the number 1 car LOL

Just looked at Autosport and Pitpass - neither of them are carrying the story. Planet-F1 is but only reporting that the Graunida is saying that Button's off to McLaren.

IF it is true, it'll be an interesting team-mate competition; I reckon Hamilton's faster but Button's smoothness may tell with no refuelling making tyre wear a potentially bigger factor next season.

Button had the best car, when, later in the season, it wasnt so good, Rubens was getting some times out of it when button wasnt. Pressure? no. hes just not that good, Lewis will give him a hard time. Button has had a few good drives this season, but hes going to have his ass handed to him.

Jenson had a car this year that suited his driving style & he won, next year the chance of any car doing the same is low. If I was in his place I'd count the money, try my best then count the money again :).

He's won the world championship & got a shed load of money, I'd hate to have a life that sucked as bad as that............

its not entirely out of the realms of reality that Kimi could go to Merc, though his manager has apparently said hes rallying next year as the seat at mclaren was the one he wanted. Bets on that webber is gone from RedBull in 2011 and Kimi is in his seat.

You do know that he's won the championship do you? :bonk:

He wouldn't have if it was a level playing field at the start of the season regarding the double diffusers.

However 2010 is shaping up on paper at least to be the best season for years.

I think Buttons problem will be how the car is built and set-up.
Hamilton (like Schumacher and Senna) likes a 'pointy' car. A car where the front end is planted and the rear moves about.
Button likes a '50-50' car, one that slides neutrally and is smooth.
The Mclaren is pointy, Button is going to have to set up his car very differently than Hamilton sets up his.
At least thats how I see it.

I'm a McLaren fan & not a fan of Buttons' at all, never have rated him & not been impressed with the way he has behaved in the past.

However, people such as Brundle, whose opinion I definately do respect rate Button very highly. So now we will get to compare him to the Hamilton benchmark in the same car.

My guess is "he's toast"!

This should be interesting.

Agree with you on this

If defending a WDC isn't hard enough having a new team to get used to, arguebly the best driver on the grid as a team mate who knows the team and the car and has no pressure at all on him to contend with aswell its going to be tough for Jenson, not his biggest fan but as a McLaren fan i would like to see him do well

as has been said though, I can't see it

If this had been the other way around and Lewis was going to join Brawn GP with Jenson, would he still have 'his ass handed to him'?

I think he probably would.

I'm prepared to be proved wrong, but I think Hamilton is just plain quicker.

Not a good move for Button in my opinion.

Will be fun to see how next year plans out, although probably wont watch much of it now my favourite driver wont be competing (Kimi)

Mr Schu is now working for the Ferrari road car development program ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fairly well paid contract that says he can't race for anyone except Ferrari.

btw guys, the rumour doing the rounds is that Mr Schu might be driving a Mercedes GP in 2010

Now that i would believe, i had wondered after Ferrari announced that SSchu wont be advisor to the F1 team any more.
