jeangenie's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 Beginnings

Very clever, nicely composed and cleverly presented, I'm also hungry now ;)

Yumsie-yum.
Plenty of chemistry going on - thanks for the added food science lesson:)

Setting it out as a scientific formula adds to the chemistry feel, and it ain't bad at all for a first go at layers.

I like how we have two shots of industry and stuff going on adding up to a well composed and very pleasing conclusion. I think the streak of jam lifts the image well...and tastily.

Might as well make it 3 Rob's in a row!

Your 1st play shot is the one i would go for! And chemistry is a great idea and well executed:clap:

Cheers, Rob

:clap::clap::clap:

Very well done indeed Jean. The sequence works very well, and the end result is spot on. Looks a yummy cake too. The Chemistry lesson was very interesting as well ;)

The second cake today and all I can do is look Sorry, Darren.

Three very nice shots Jean and I like the way you've laid them out in an equation like this. They all look well taken, particularly the cake, and I don't need convincing that it's chemistry :)

Thanks, Darren. :)

Tea two sugars cheers

Great capture (s) of and decent interpretation of the film. Probably the best input and output you will get out of taking a picture for the 52 Oh dear, does that mean it's all going downhill for the next 42 weeks!

1st two look great but the 3rd is the main priority for this. Its a shame that the first two didnt have a blackground also, but i understand you were taking the pics as the process went on. Thats my only little niggle

Otherwise that cake looks superb and its my favourite.

So....wheres why tea and slice of cake then? :p

 I tried to leave out backgrounds on this because I had to put the food processor on the counter top, and it looked very cluttered. The first two were taken in the evening and the last one the following morning, so the light was very different, too. I'm glad you liked the cake, Stephen, but it's all gone now! I think cake just evaporates all on its own> ;)

fantastic (and yummy looking) chemisty shots

Thank you very much. :)

Play - I love the first shot. What gorgeous little dogs. Amazing to get a good shot of both together. Definitely more luck than anything else! :)

Chemistry - very clever, very chemistry, very well done with this one. My mouth has started watering!

Jenny

Thanks, Jenny. :)

Rob, Rob and Rob - many thanks. All your comments are much appreciated, and you made it easy for me to get your names right. :D:D:D

Thanks, John, although I don't think the ingredients appear on that periodic table of yours.
:D

snap .. I did some baking too! Nice shots .. cake looks good.

Thank you kindly, JL. I suppose yours has all gone too! :)

I love this take on the theme.
I can't believe that it's the second cake shot I've seen because this is something I would never have thought of doing for chemistry.

The triptych approach is something that's come up a lot this week - and I'm not surprised because it works brilliantly with the theme. I like the way that you've taken it a step further by turning it into an equation.

All 3 images are good and sharp in their own right and it really shows the progression of the baking process. My only suggestion is one that's already been mentioned, I'd have liked to have seen a consistent background through all of them. The first 2 are lovely natural looking images, while the 3rd has that "product shot" feel. I like both styles, but would have preferred all 3 to be the same if you know what I mean.

That cake does look delicious
I really want to reach in to grab and eat that crumb on the outside.

Well done on your triptych - works really well - another very original take on the theme!

Phil

Love your chemistry shots . I didnt realise I was doing all that chemistry when I was baking a cake. Excellent and very original.

Thanks, Sue. At least now, when a cake goes wrong I can put it down to a 'failed experiment' rather than carp baking! :D

Thanks Sarah - as always I appreciate the time and trouble you take on such detailed feedback. I'm afraid both the crumb on the outside and the rest of the cake are no more. :( I'll have to get baking again. :)

Well done on your triptych - works really well - another very original take on the theme!

Phil

Thank you Phil - much appreciated. :)

Jean

I wondered if we'd get some baking! This fits the theme perfectly and I particularly like the way you have arranged the three images with the maths signs.

I tend to agree with the remarks on the different backgrounds, but you know what to do...........BAKE ANOTHER CAKE! :D

Love the Chemistry shots - it's definitely not something others would have thought of. The tight crops work well for smaller shots.

Nice take on this theme Jean. As I'm so late in replying I don't expect there's any cake left is there?

Love the equation idea in the triptych, the three shots are great to make up the effect. The cake looks nice and light :D yummy!!

Thanks, Dave. I'm a sucker for tight crops, and it's great to have someone else's opinion. :D

Thanks, Paul. Sorry, the cake's all gone - but I baked another one this morning! Shall I put the kettle on? :D

Thanks Scott - I can't take much credit for the cake - throw the ingredients in the food processor and it does the job for me! :D

I had a couple of ideas for this week - and a couple of days when I had time to do them - Friday and Saturday! I don't know what it was like where you are, but here the rain poured down non-stop all day on Friday, so I abandoned the planned trip to Christchurch, where I was going to get some cadid shots around the Priory and down by the harbour.

For Saturday, I planned to visit Lymington market, always busy and lots going on, and perhaps the quayside with week-end visitors wandering round. It rained! Even harder than Friday! :bang::bang::bang: I tried nipping out locally when it was only heavy, rather than torrential, but for some reason there were very few people about, and those who were had their heads down and were hurrying to get under cover.

So, I'll come back to this one, but for now, this is the best I could get:

Walking in the Rain:

Visibility was so bad, I didn't even see the pony behind the people when I took the shot.

and as I got back home, there was the postie:

Working in the Rain:

At least I can vouch for the weatherproof qualities of the D700!

I'll have to put this down as a 'filler' week! :(

Jean

It's hard isn't it? I'm going to admit to feeling a tad weird photogrpahing peole with their knowledge, not something I enjoyed tbh. Your walkers shot left me feeling a little 'flat' but the postie pic more than makes up. The B&W conversion really adds to the image of a wet miserable day - me likey

I think we had almost the exact same plan. I had hoped to get to Christchurch as well as I knew there would be some great shots to take, I then hoped to get out to the New Forest and take some but illness and rain stopped play so I actually ended up with one of me in my lounge taken sneekily by my wife.

W've had some great weather all week down here and then when I get a spare minute to take photos it rains!

Well done for getting them Jean... I agree about the first looking a bit flat... maybe more contrast to help overcome the rain...

I like the mono postie shot, and I feel it's nearly a better shot... I'm not sure on the focus though, it looks like it might be a little this side of the bike... or it's motion blur... I can't decide... might be a bit of both... Sorry Jean

Just a quick contrast change as suggested. Hope you are happy with this outcome?

I know how you feel, Rob, and I was hoping to photograph people without their knowledge (which is what candid means to me - I think  :))
but it was hard to find anyone out in what was really awful weather. So, I agree I felt a bit 'flat' (and very wet ) shooting the walkers, but I'm really chuffed you like our postie. :)

Oh well, we can both still have Christchurch on our 'must visit for Candids' list (my list is fairly short, tbh :D) And it really was hard to find anyone out and about in the Forest. I'll pop over and see your thread in a bit. :)

Sorry Jean  Hehehe - I think the softness was the sheet of water coating my lens - I think I'd have been better off taking it in the car or house! :D

Just a quick contrast change as suggested. Hope you are happy with this outcome?

I take the point about contrast! The rain was torrential, visibility close to nil and the lens covered in splashes. Ugh ...:) This is what I started with:

and it was only desperation that made me post it at all. :bang: I tried more contrast, black and white, sepia, bizzare-off-the-wall things with loads of different sliders, but the saying about 'silk purses' and 'sow's ears' comes to mind! So many thanks for having a go at it. It does look brighter and hopefully foretells of better weather to come. :)

Jean

like the postie and his bike, suits the B+W conversion.. might have cropped the car out perhaps?.. you did great with the other shot from the starting image.. looks totally different

The postie and his bike illustrate working in the rain very well. I dont envy their job when its horrible weather. You made a good job of it with the BW conversion which fits the miserable day well.

I can't see your postie shot for some reason Jean . . . are you getting back at me for my candid shot being hidden from you? ;)

And if it's any consolation, you're not the only one whose shoot didn't quite go as planned - one reason I prefer still life
I went to the local canal for wildlife shots on Sunday only to find half of it cordoned off where they're doing restoration work :bang:

Anyway onto the one I can see. If I'm honest "Walkers in the rain" isn't the best that you've done, but hey it fits the theme and fills the gap for this week!
And the pony in the background did make me smile. It looks like it's slung over one of the walkers' shoulders.

Thanks, Michelle. I thought about cropping the car out, but it left the postie about to walk out of the frame. This is cropped from a much wider angle, so I guess I could have left more of the car in, which might have been better. :bang:

Thanks, Sue. It looks like we've got fog to look forward to tomorrow.

I can't see your postie shot for some reason Jean . . . are you getting back at me for my candid shot being hidden from you? ;) Sorry, Sarah, but at least you knew why your shot wasn't showing, while I have no idea why our postie gone all shy on you. It's posted (no pun intended) first class from my TP gallery. Perhaps it was my turn to feed the hamster!

And if it's any consolation, you're not the only one whose shoot didn't quite go as planned - one reason I prefer still life  I can get those going wrong, too. :D

The missing postie for Sarah. :)

I really like the postman shot - a great candid shot - you get the feel of what an awful day it is to be out delivering letters.

Hi Jean, catchup time for me.

Chemistry is great. Very interesting text to go with it, and as someone with a wife who enjoys (and is very good at) baking, it was interesting tor ead the science. Like the idea of a tryptich and it works well in this instance.

I feel your pain with Candid. I havd exactly the same trouble with Chemistry and ended up not posting anything rather than sticking something up I wasn't reasonably happy with.

The postie shot though is not a filler in my eyes. It could maybe lost the car boot on teh left hand side, and it looks a little blurred, but I actully quite like it. Head down... trudging on... Takes me back to when I used to work for the GPO. :)

Ian.

I actually like your first one Jean - maybe some different PP and crop - more portrait orientated with the walkers in the bottom left of the shot.

The postie is good as well but, and it's probably my eyes, but he/she seems a little OOF. The car and window are a bit too distracting but as you have said cropping those out doesn't give him/her enough room.

The weather is sometimes right against us, isn't it. I don't think I would even have gone out in such conditions so full marks for trying.

The postie shot works really well in spite of its slight blurriness - I love pictures of people going about their daily business. Personally I would crop the car out - if you also take a little off the gate on the left I don't think it would look as if the postie is walking out of the picture.

Like the posty picture and it certainly fits the theme... . so not a filler by any means

Postman shot is a prett good one! Very candid and I admire your guts to go photographing people on the street.

The softness of the picture (most likely due to the weather conditions) make it even more real.

 Postie's back again!

And I think I definitely prefer him to the walkers.
The B&W adds to the feel of the dull, drab day. I don't mind that bit of softness either, it somehow adds something to the feel of the shot.

I agree with the couple of suggestions of cropping the car out though.

Technically the better photograph is the postman but there's something about the walkers shot before you cranked the contrast up. I think the muted colours add to the feel of the image. Maybe it's just me though ;)

Well done

Thank you Lizbeth. Some jobs must be 'mares in bad weather! :)

Thanks, Ian. I'm glad you enjoyed the cake! :)

The postie shot - I'm beginning to wonder if I should have cropped less not more. I wanted to put him in the context of trudging from one house to the next, so with that in mind, I think I should have kept in the two houses - or, an same people like yourself are suggesting, cropped out the whole of the car. :bang:

I really appreciate the comments. :)

Thanks Paul. I hadn't thought of cropping to portrait. :) I had a mind set of 'I must show the context - and the awful weather!' but cropping the walkers as you suggest would still give an idea of where they were, etc. Thanks, I'll have a go when I get a minute.

The postie is oof - the lens was covered in water, and I hadn't got anything suitable to dry it with. It ws a brand new lens and I didn't want to risk scratching the filter (although, I didn't really think twice about taking it out in the rain! :bonk: :) )

The weather is sometimes right against us, isn't it. I don't think I would even have gone out in such conditions so full marks for trying.

Thanks, Tracer. Everyone seems to agree about the car! It will have to go! :)

Like the posty picture and it certainly fits the theme... . so not a filler by any means

Thank you very much. I'm pleased he's got such a good response from you all. :)

Thank you very much! I find the hardest thing is getting a shot without attracting the subject's attention, because they tend to just stop what they're doing and smile. :bang:

 Postie's back again! Thank goodness - he must have just nipped off for a cuppa! :D

And I think I definitely prefer him to the walkers.

Thanks, Rich. That's an interesting comment about the walkers' photo. I did consider posing it with no pp - ie as muted as it really was - and I thought nobody would like it. Which raises the question: do I post photos for other people, or for myself. I think mostly it's for me, but sometimes I pp something into or out of an image because I assume it will get slated if I don't. Does that make sense? :)

Your comments are really appreciated. ;)

Jean

Makes a lot of sense to me. I think the minute you actually start to take people's opinions on board, you're bound to work the photo to suit the audience. Sometimes though, i do like to take a shot and do my own thing with it. Either way, good shots :)
