jeangenie's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 Beginnings

Nice clear picture with the potential for speed. Hope to see a pic of it steaming along soon.

Thanks, Sue We've got a couple of attachments to enable it to do various jobs. :)

I didn't realise it was steam in the first shot I just thought the quality wasn't as good as the first one, ha ha. You're right, the second one would have looked better on black. Still both very good images and I'm looking forward to seeing it get restored to glory.

Thanks Steve - I appreciate the comments. I've given Mr JG a time limit of Week 52 to restore it.

Cracking shot for speed.

Thank you very much - we wondered if it would literally crack - there's certainly a damaged o-ring at the top of the little chimney thingy. :)

That's inspired, I love it :)

Thanks, Rob - glad you like it.

excellent shot well done nice bit of motion blurr

Thanks, Andy - it was quite hard getting the motion of the 'arm' just right - it's better in the first than the second shot.

Well thought out and well executed shot.

Thank you kindly, Steve.

fits the theme nicely

Thanks - although it must be one of the slower 'speeds' around. :)

This is an excellent take on the theme. Quite unique. Well done. It is a pity about the black background - that would have just made the shot because the steam is not very obvious on this one.

Jenny

Thanks, Jenny - I'm going to try and 'produce' a black background, because I was amazed how much steam came out. Although an expert friend said too much steam means it's not running at optimum efficiency! But he's not a photographer!

Lovely shot Jean and a lovely story to go with it.
Now you're going to have to go out and get a bigger dark b/g, because I really want to see that when it's fully restored and I agree that the steam would show up better against something darker.

Of the two that you've posted, my vote goes to the first one. Only because it looks crisper against the white. I don't know how you always manage to get your white b/gs so perfect. I find black easy, but white I always struggle with  Thanks, Sarah. I took this in the garden against white mount board and then just lightened it in Levels.

Really vibrant colours, good sharp shot and I love the motion blur going on with the wheel  I was surprised how fast it went, tbh!

I've just realised that I haven't dropped into your personal project for a while (sorry). I'll have to hunt it down again. Sarah, the 52s are so busy, I don't know how you get to comment on so many - you're doing a fantastic job!

Thats a new take on the theme, would have loved to see it running. You have captured it very well, it looks like something you would find Fred Dibnah working on(loved watching Fred as a small boy and an adult)

Thank you very much Scott - not as fast as your usual modes of transport, though. :) Mr JG still watches old re-runs of Fred - and even I think he's fascinating, because he makes it understandable.

Jean

Great shot. If i saw this lying around i don't think i would have initially thought of speed but the long shutter makes it look pretty darn fast. Wouldn't want my fingers near it anyway :nono:

Thanks Rich. :) I'd definitely keep my fingers away from it when Mr JG harnesses up the power hammer that goes with it.

Speed:

Jean, both are nice clean shots.

The steam does work even on the white background and adds to the sense of speed - it looks like it is going so fast it is setting on fire! I think that with the steam and the motion you have 2 indicators of speed and so I would choose the 2nd one over the 1st.

well, thats a different take on the theme! :)

i'm another that struggles with white backgrounds!.. both great but do prefer the second, fred came into my head as I was looking at your photos.. could imagine him saying.. 'd'ya like that' ;)

Liking the shot, but the steam does add to the sense of motion, so I prefer that one myself. :)

I like the Speed shot, it's something a little different, plus I've always wanted a Mamod steam engine! I prefer the second one also :)

Thank you kindly - I can't help thinking Fred would say it needs cleaning! :)

Thank you, Keri. :)

Glad you like both the shot and the engine. It arrived in our engine shed (otherwise known as a spare bedroom!) via eBay, I think. :)

Jean

Love the street shot, brilliant. Great lighting and mood, too!

Speed, what a fabby little machine! Like the shot :)

Sorry it's taken me so long to find and comment your thread

I'm trying to catch up here but so many threads and so little time...

A lovely shot of a lovely machine - I always wanted one of those when I was a child. :D

Shorty and Tracer - Thank you both for the comments. They're always appreciated, but even more so when there are so many active 52s. :)

It's amazing how many of us yearn for the toys we did - or didn't have as a child. I always wanted Meccano but was always told it was a boys' toy! Grrrr.... But apparently, when Meccano started printing the picture of a girl and a boy on the box (instead of 2 boys) in 1977 sales halved! :suspect: :shake:

LOL. I always wanted a train set but, of course, could not have one. When I eventually had a brother, he got a racing car set :( When I eventually had a son myself we bought him a wonderful train set but he was not interested in the slightest!

Jenny

Well done Jean. I thought with it being late you'd maybe run out of steam, sorry. A great idea and take, gives a good feel for the movement...Mick

Awww - Jenny, I'm sorry you never got your train set, but at least you got to play with your son's.

What's this 'late' Mick? :bat::bat::bat: :) 'Late' for me is 11.55 on Sunday night 5 minutes before deadline!:lol: I enjoy the pressure! :D I'm pleased you like the little steam engine, though, and I'm sure it will make another appearence - hopefully fully renovated.

Jean

Very good Jean, good to see it running too... it might be a static steam engine, but there's some good movement, and that flywheel sure looks to be going fast...

as for your most useful photographic skill :lol:

Thanks, John. I was quite surprised how fast it went for such a little engine!

I've got a feeling my most useful photographic skill will be needed even more this week.

Fantastic capture of Speed in steam!
Brings back very fond memories of a Traction Engine Steam Fair we used to go to every year as a kid.

Excellent Jean! Thanks for the reminder of past good times too!

Street is very clever! Like that a lot! And who said street had to be "street photography" eh? Bang on theme I say

Love speed too. That takes me back to me and my own mecanno sets too! I remember trying to build a helicopter once but coud never get enough power in to lift all that metal

Hello, Jean. Got here at last, but please accept my apologies for taking so long to do so.

I smiled and smiled some more at 'chopped'. The thing that clinched it for me was the positioning of the poor monkeh's hands.

I thought that by using the shop name for the 'speed' theme was inspired and original. The light flare in the right hand window didn't bother me - I was more interested in the contrast between the light in the lower and upper windows.

And as for the picture of the Mamod and the mention of Meccano, well, it was like a happy trip back to my early years. Thank you:)
I thought the inclusion of the steam and the motion blur worked well but agreed that a dark background would be rather handy.

With hindsight (my most useful photographic skill ) the steam would have looked better on a black background - but I haven't got one large enough. :)

Jean

Great shot Jean - have to agree though a darker background would suit it better. But very well lit.

Awww - thanks very much. :) It's amazing how a fondly remembered object can bring the past rushing back. In my case, it's probably a sign of age!

Thanks, KG. So no crowbar award for me on Street, then!

:lol: I can imagine trying to get a helicopter in the air with this steam engine! Did you become an engineer? Mr JG has just revived his childhood interest in Meccano and is trying to build up a Set 10 (the biggy!) "for the grandchildren" - he says. :D

Hi Rob. Thanks for dropping in - the 52s are so busy, there's loads of people I haven't visited yet. I'm glad you like Chpped - poor Monkeh's just about recovered, but (whisper) His hands were positioned with double-sided tape, Blue Peter style. :D

I did actually put a dark background onto the steam engine, but my computer's broken and I haven't had chance to post it yet.

Thank you for your lovely comments - thye're much appreciated.

I might be breaking a few of our 52 rules here - but I don't care. :D

We all like receiving presents, but some are so special they can't be compared with anything - not even a new camera.

On Monday, our daughter-in-law had her 12-week scan - first baby for them, and third grandchild for us. I never expected to feel so emotional about grandchildren, but they are truly the most amazing gift: the joy of a new baby combined with the joy of watching your own children growing into parents, loving and cherishing their own babes. Sorry if this is a bit :gag: and I'm not usually yeukky and soppy - but that's what grandchildren have done to me.

So, Mr JG and I had a fantastic present this week:

Of course, Clyde had to get in on the shot too, and is clearly preparing to welcome the new baby with a good licking!

... and if the photos within the photo look familiar, you may have seen them on this thread:

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=202543

:D:D:D

I've now broken 2 rules - must be new to TP, and must be taken by me!! (I've been breaking rules over in my Growing thread, too. :naughty: )

C&C is, as always, welcome. My compuer's broken so I don't know when I'll get access to Mr JG's again to comment on everybody else's 52, so please bare with me - I'm not intentionally ignoring you. :)

Congratulations on your special present.

You rebel!!!!

Congratulations and what a fantastic present

I'm guessing the rest of the shot is completely yours, so only a minor cheat - and it is really very well composed, Nice DoF and just the right amount of clarity on Clyde's face too

Hope your PC is fixed soon.

Great news and I really like the way you've captured this moment. Rules broken? So what? Lovely image of a lovely image (yes men get broody too!)

Congrats Jean, thats really unique.I hope you teach the grand kids lots of bad habits just so your grown up kids know what they put you through:thumbs:..Mick

Yep, the rest of the shot is mine. But not having my computer is ... Aggggghhhh :bang::bang::bang: :)

Thanks, Darren. :)

Thanks, Mick. No worries about teaching the grandkids bad habits - I practised on our own kids first!

Jean

Congratulations!

And a really good take on the theme - not cheating at all. DOF is just right and Clyde really adds to the shot.

Congratulation Jean, that's excellent news. As for the pic, whilst part of the content might not be new, the rest is surely ? As for rules... what rules :D... It's a very good image anyway.

OMG, I nearly cried seeing that. We're coming up to our 12 week scan too, although we've had a couple of early scans it's that one that really counts. :D:D

Well, that's one wonderful present, Jean. Many congratulations.
Anyway, I'm a bloke, so that's more than enough getting all soppy about things:lol:

I think the composition is spot on, as is your dof. The shot conveys the moment so well.

And when the nipper arrives, I bet his peers will be well jealous - Must be really cool, having a rowdy rule breaker for a grandma:)

PS: hope the pc is fixed soon. Dang things, aren't they? Never mind reboot, there are times mine comes close to being booted right out the window.

Wow, fantastic news for your Present.

Love the composition and the D0F and it's not really cheating as I was ready a poetry book for poetry :D

Love the Speed pics too and #1 is my favourite - boys and toys

Going to pop over to see how your garden is growing soon.
