jeangenie's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 Beginnings

Definitely on theme Jean and a beautiful image. The DoF and eye contact from the foal are both spot on.
You're so lucky to have all of that right on your doorstep - and to catch a foal that young is an extra bonus.

BTW Is that really mum? It looks like there might be some male equipment on display, unless that's a trick of the light with the rear leg

Again Sarah says it all

I did a bit of a double take too on the sex of mum but I guess she just has big udders full of milk :)

Yes, that works for me too. Nice take on the theme.

That shot of the Foal is a cracker! Looks really fresh too. And I think the mother is well due a little snack after her little new born!

Stare is excellent too! Love the first one. It's like the pair are either having a "stare off" or else checking each other out

That shot of the clam is a corker by the way. What a great B&W. Shot was perfect for it! :)

Lovely image Jean.

Hi Gary. Thanks very much.

well caught and I thinks fit the theme ok. Foal is giving you the once over :)

Thanks - it was worth getting up early for - and I was the first human being she'd seen - I hope I haven't scared her! :)

Jean, this is absolutely lovely. What a gorgeous little thing. It is indeed a very peaceful scene, so not too much of a crowbar! It is really nice that the little one is looking at the camera.:clap::clap:

Just one small thing that I would have preferred - slightly less foreground and slightly more at the top of the photo, but it is easy to say that after it comes out of the camera!

Jenny

Thank you very much, Jenny. tbh, I could have given you more foreground - the was a fairly heavy crop - but the thought of cloning out all the piles of horse poo put me off! I also got a shot of the afterbirth!

Good shot, the subjects are nicely isolated from the background by the DOF.

Thank you, Steve. :)

Jean

lovely image Jean and a beautiful moment

Thanks, Chris. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time - for once. :D

Stunning shot Jean. Wonderful composition. Lovely and sharp.

A stroke of luck I think picking up the lens you did. Wouldn't have had the impact at 70mm.

No critique at all from me.

Ian.

Thanks Ian. I have to say, I was (and still am) thrilled. :)

Its a lovely shot Jean and well captured. Really says Peace to me

Thanks Darren. So no crowbar needed, then! :D

BTW Is that really mum? It looks like there might be some male equipment on display, unless that's a trick of the light with the rear leg

Thanks for the lovely comments, Sarah. It is definitely mum! Unless the foal has made a very serious mistake!

Again Sarah says it all

I did a bit of a double take too on the sex of mum but I guess she just has big udders full of milk :)

... and as you can see, her baby is already at the milk bar! :)

Yes, that works for me too. Nice take on the theme.

Thank you very much. Glad you like it. :)

Hi Conor. Thanks very much for the lovely comments. :D

Another gorgeous shot Jean :) that is one pretty little foal. I bought a little one from the New Forest sales once and called him Rufus....he was a lovely little chap :)

Aw Jean that first Peace image is a cracker, and the foal could easily count for lasts weeks picture as well, certainly staring at you!

hopefully s/he will grow into his/her legs....

Reminds me of a toy i had as a very young kid, where if you pressed on the bottom of it, the animal collapsed, when you let go it stood up again....

Isn't it amazing a foal can walk in minutes yet a human takes 9-15 months...

Jean, I love both your images here. The light is fantastic, setting off the contrast between the mare and foal. The composition works well in both too, mother and baby look calm and at peace, so bang on theme  Iain

Awww - a beautiful image! :clap::clap:

As you say, well worth getting up for. I can drag myself up early for work but not yet for photography, I'm afraid, so I'm even more impressed.

Lovely shot Jean - grest subject and I like the colours and perfect dof.

Phil

Excellent and spot on theme. What a great sight too. Well shot

Lovely image, crisp, clean and spot on on theme.

reminds me of when I use to foal the mares here all 16 of them, just wish I had my camera then

I think I've lost count on how many times I've said aaaaawww! today but your last 2 shots are  the young foal is so adorable.

I love cows.. 3 great shots there.. think I prefer the last one, great composition

the foal is simply adorable.. super shot.. what a fabulous experience it must have been to just sit and watch close up.. I do hope it didn't make a mistake :D

Thanks for the lovely comments. NF ponies are lovely - and perfect for a child to learn to ride on because they're hardy and bomb-proof in traffic. Sadly most aren't as lucky as Rufus was. :'(

Yep - That's my keyboard sprayed with wine!

Sorry, Sarah! I should have known you'd have a glass in your hand.:lol::lol:

Thanks Lynton - I'm pleased you like the shot. I remember those toys, and 'my' foal was just like that - all wobbly!

Thanks, Iain - it's great when varialbe work together!

Lovely shot, fits the bill quite well for this week.

Allan

Thank you kindly, Allan.

Thanks Tracer. I've got two dogs who help to get me up and drag me out for walkies every day!

Lovely shot Jean - grest subject and I like the colours and perfect dof.

Phil

Thanks, Phil. :)

Excellent and spot on theme. What a great sight too. Well shot

Thanks, John - I still feel lucky to have been there!

Thank you, Nicki. 16 mares! wow, they must have kept you busy, but I bet each birth was magic. :)

I think I've lost count on how many times I've said aaaaawww! today but your last 2 shots are  the young foal is so adorable.

Thanks, Scott. She really is pretty, and skewbalds are fairly unusual. :)

 I seem to be stuck in an animal rut, but thanks for your lovely comment, Michelle. It sure was a fabulous experience - and the foal was well fed! ;)

Jean

I'm sorry I haven't got round to visiting many 52 threads this week - other stuff has been getting in the way and then there's a major distraction - Ven's NestCam (a sticky in the Birds forum, if you haven't seen it, but be warned, it's addictive!)

I don't suppose I'm the only one to chose this subject for my Indulgence, but I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it! I really hope you like this, because a reshoot most definitely isn't possible since Mr JG and I have disposed of the subjects! Yum, yum. :D

I did think of a tryptich - one cake in each photo, but I was too busy scoffing.

C & C very welcome, as always. :)

Jean

Ok I have just dribbled on my keyboard!!! Wonderfully indulgent and colourful shot I don't mind the oof bit at the front as it leads the eye to the delicious fruity bits :)

Lovely. Colourful, sharp and it looks delicious. Seems like a few people have indulged themselves with sugary things this week...

Really like that DoF you've got going on.

Ian.

Great idea but I would have preferred the Danish in focus rather than the hundreds and thousands, and fresh cream as well. :naughty::nono: yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

great colours and looks yummy, not sure about the dof though .. you might just have to buy some more to try again :D

Definetly fits the theme. The DOF doesn't quite work for me but the kiwis colour really draws me in

Mouth wateringly good. Great colour. Looks like the DOF might be a Marmite thing :-)
I quite like it as is.

Really like it, but im not keen on the blur half way accross the hundreds and thousands
Other than that, lovely! Yumm

Really nice colours and subject but agree with others about the DoF not working.

I would have been tempted to lose the plate and put them directly onto the white surface.

Wow - so many comments. Thank you one and all. :)

I used a shallow dof for 2 reasons: the pastry wasn't very photogenic - whichever way I 'posed' it, it just looked flat and boring with a couple of bits of cherry spoiling the outline (it tasted muchbetter! ;)) and I was using natural light early Sunday evening, with deadline fast approaching so I didn't really have time to set up with flash. So using a large aperture helped the light - and disguised the pastry a bit. I put them on a plate to give a bit of an angle. I guess the whole thing was a bit of a rush job. :$

I also took individual pics of each cake 'cos my original idea was to make a tryptich, but time put paid to that! :bang:

I suppose the moral of the story is one I should have learned last year - don't leave the 52 until Sunday afternoon, and the other lesson to learn is 'don't photograph food when you're hungry' because I found my thoughts turning more and more to eating the shot than taking it.

I really appreciate everyone's comments, and I'm seriously going to get this week's done earlier. :)

Jean

That's a refreshing change to all the chocolate, lots of colours and textures. If I was being picky I would like a little more dof.

bang on the theme, did ponder about the blurred cake at the front but I decided it was good. I like it and good colours. tell you what though i am having to put extra working in on my MTB, im putting weight on just looking at these cakes lol. keep up the good work

dof doesn't work at all for me. Either all in focus or more selective composition. This does mean you'll have to reshoot this week and buy more cakey loveliness.

Or more cake, Scott? Thanks for the comments. ;)

David -Thank you for the comments, but don't worry - these are guaranteed calorie free cakes. Did you see any calories going into them? :D

:bang: oh no! not more cakes! And it is a reshoot week, isn't it? OMG.
Thanks for the comments, though - I do appreciate them. :)

Jean

yummy !!!
the DoF doesnt work for me .... but am sure that I could just nip round and keep you company whilst you reshoot it (not so I can eat cakes honest !!!!!!)

Don't worry I can come and help :D

Look forward to seeing more of your cakes,:naughty: oh I mean shots

Oooooh Yummy !!!!!!
Another flawless white b/g (I'm still struggling with these :bang:) and the splashes of colour from the strawberries and Kiwi absolutely make it for me.

For a last minute, rushed shot it's come out well . . . and I've been there too
But I agree with the DoF not being right. Are you sure you didn't do that deliberately to give yourself a reshoot opportunity?

 I think I'm going to go and find this nestcam thread . . . sounds interesting.
