jeangenie's 52 for 2010 Pt 2 - Wks 45 Share,47 Distortion & 48 Lead: Catch up Part 4!

Congratulations!
You do realise you are never going to be short of subject again, only problem now is picking which image you prefer more. The baby looks cute ;)

Our little granddaughter was born last night. :)

Mum and baby are both fine, and I'm busy working out how to crowbar hundreds of baby pictures into the next 19 weeks of the 52. :)

Proud Grandma :)
(aka Jean)

Best wishes to mum & baby too - I'm popping over to look at the official baby thread now (hoping that there are pics!)

Jean i much prefer the simplicity of the first, the light and black makes almost make it a mono without converting it. It works really well and i like the way you have mirrored the look with the frame too.

Thanks Chris - the frame was a bit of an afterthought, but I'm glad you like it because I thought it added a bit of co-ordination to the shot. :D

She's just beautiful  - congrats to you all!

Thanks Sarah and Tracer - I'll find some way of crowbarring more piccies into this week's theme - I will! I will!

Jean

Congratulations to you and your family.

I prefer the first version of this. The chrome finish surrounding the black is great.

Andy

Thanks Andy - we're all over the moon! :)

Andy

Just for a second I thought you meant you preferred the first version of the baby.:bang: :) I'm really pleased you like it. :)

Jean

I resisted the temptation to crowbar a baby photo into this week - I'm sure I'll find lots of other opportunities. ;) :D

To me 'Surfaces' suggested texture(s), and I had various unworkable ideas, but in the end went with a leaf of Sage officinalis purpurascens - Purple Sage in English. :)

Taken in natural daylight from the kitchen window with the 105mm macro lens. I thought of taking just the one leaf against a black shiny background to give contrasting textures but couldn't find a suitable b/g material. :(

Your comments - good, bad and awful - will be greatly appreciated. I feel I could have done something more with it but don't know what. :bang:

Jean

I like it as it is Jean. The colour, lighting and composition all work well together. I dont think a plain background would give the depth you have in this image. The oof background helps the image. It looks like a tongue to me, albeit if my tongue was that colour I might be tempted to get myself along to the doctor:lol: Iain

that leafs texture is cool, and agree its like a tongue, not that i would want a rough tongue though. I keep going back for another look. good work.

Great picture Jean, lovely texture to the shot and fits the theme well. Two things missing for me though. The little scratch off and smell strip and the need to run my hands over a lovely soft surface.:lol You have nailed the dof with this perfectly and the composition is strong, well done:thumbs:

Nice colour and texture captured here. It does make me want to reach out and touch it. Might have been tempting to get even closer in for all that lovely detail. A small shame about the leaf bottom right as it's a little distracting, but good effort :)

As has already been said, fantastic textures in this.
 I also love the colours, love the DoF and love the angle that you've shot the leaf at! I want to reach in and touch it too.

I'm glad that you didn't go for a black b/g. As much as I love black b/g shots, this one really benefits from the natural backdrop. It emphasises the DoF and holds all the colour tones together.

Re: Your feeling that there's something more that could be done to this, the only thing that bothers me slightly (and I do only mean slightly) is the RHS.
Maybe a square crop to lose those 2 extra leaves on the side and make the main leaf run diagonally corner to corner - or perhaps a bit of vignetting to darken those 2 leaves down a touch?

A quick catch-up from me. I prefer the concept of the first image for mobile, but it needs more punch somehow - probably a greater dof would have done the job.

I really like the texture on the surfaces shot - I wonder if you could have got a angle where we could see three leaves in the frame - I think it might have made for a more appealing composition.

Phil

Fantastic texture caught on the leaf and it really does look like a tongue !

Perhaps you could try a bit of a crop on the right or just darkening that part with Levels, but I like the natural look of it as it is.

Transform, a great idea, and the skin are interesting images. I think they probably just needed a little faster shutter as they look a little soft. Shame on the snake motion too.

Mobile, love the idea in the first one, the silver on black, particularly with that hexagon works so well... I'm afraid it's another one, that looks a little soft.. Sorry.

The second one works better from a sharpness view, and I like it, but I feel it's not quite got the same impact as the original.

Surfaces, ahh now... there we go. Spot on. The muted colours in the oof background add to it nicely, and there's plenty of detail in the leaf.

Jean, firstly my apologies. I could have sworn I'd commented on your thread, but looking through it appears I haven't. So a quick catch up on the previous few weeks:

Endings - Love your luggage shots. Maybe a slightly more aged and worn look by adding a texture perhaps.

Electric - a bit sneaky with this one Jean - I recognised it, but couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Mobile - Prefer the second shot and if you desaturate the Blues and Cyans, it would give a nice polished look.

Surfaces - Lovely texture in the leaf Jean.

Thanks Iain - if your tongue was that colour, I'd be very, very worried about you.

A lovely surface on that leaf. It does look like a tongue. I wonder if a crop off the right hand side would help?

Thanks, Sue. Yes, I think a crop on the right is a very viable alternative and was actually my first take on it, but then I thought the stem colours were pretty ... :)

Cool subject - great surface texture, well spotted

Awww - thanks, Dade. It's a shot I've intended to try for a while, so I'm glad to have done it before the plant dies on me. :D

Excellent take on the theme, Jean. I really like the colours and the DOF. I tend to prefer plant shots with a natural background rather than something contrived.

Jenny

I'm sure you're right about natural b/g, Jenny. I was just trying to earn extra 'bang on theme' points by getting in more textures. ;)

Amazing texture on the leaf.

Congratulation to you and your daughter and family.

Thank you,JL - Mum and baby are doing well, and I'm racking up shutter clicks every time I see her.

that leafs texture is cool, and agree its like a tongue, not that i would want a rough tongue though. I keep going back for another look. good work.

Thanks, David. I'm glad you like it - and it's actuall quite soft and slightly furry - still not a good look for a tongue, though. lol:

:bang: Sorry, Chris - I knew I'd missed something with this one. One scratch and sniff strip coming up just as soon as I've mastered (and patented!) the technology. :D

Thanks, Darren. I seriously considered removing that bottom leaf, but it left the main one looking a bit lonely. :'(

Thanks for the detailed feedback, Sarah - it's always much appreciated. I've must admit I never think of adding a vignette. :bang: Something I must try.

Thanks Phil - I wasn't pleased with either mobile shot - the mojo was on a go-slow that week. I must try and have another go when I've got a minute. I did try to get more leaves in the picture, but unfortunately, I'd used a handful of them in dinner the previous night and kind of wrecked the plant's good looks. Grrrr ...

Fantastic texture caught on the leaf and it really does look like a tongue !

Thanks Tracer. I hadn't thought of darkening the RHS! This is one of the great things about this 52 challenge - people give such constructive and helpful feedback. :)

Thanks for the comprehensive catch-up, John. I've been kicking myself for not getting the Transform or Mobile shots pin sharp. :bang: I'm glad you like the sage leaf. :)

Paul - no apologies needed - I'm way behind on commenting on other people's threads (but hoping to catch up this week!) Thank you for all the feedback - I really appreciate it. On the ELO one, I thought everybody would recognise it, but you must all be too young! :)

Jean

What a gift of a subject this week - the very essence of photography. I wish I'd been up to the challenge to come up with something totally mind-blowing. It's the sort of situation where my imagination and realisation reside on different planets. :bang:

I aspired to an Ansel Adams-like stunningly balanced black and white photograph of majestic mountains topping with sparkling snow with a silvery stream running into the foreground. Sadly the New Forest is pretty flat - and snow is hard to come by in September. :( So this was taken on a very bright sunny morning, when the contrast between light and shade was forming patterns everywhere I looked.

C&C is very welcome, as always, and I apologise for being so far behind with comments on everybody else's shots for the last couple of weeks. I'm trying to catch up this week. :)

Jean

That's some great contrast. In places it's almost sketch-like. Some very interesting patterns made by the shadows and light. I wanted to try something similar but didn't get the chance, but I might just be inspired by this to try something during this week. I'd best check the theme :)

I really like this photo, there are photo's I like on here, then there are those that really draw me in. This is one of those that draws me in, it reminds me of walking through haigh country park with my grandad when I was a kid! Great shot, you've really captured it well.

You might not have any mountains or snow in there, but this is still a lovely image. It actually reminds me of an oil painting my grandparents had on the wall when I was a child.

The B&W has really brought out the contrast of light and shade and the composition with the path drawing you in is perfect. Not much more that I can say about this - I just like it !

Ah, that's beautiful Jean, I could see that on the wall. I love shots like this. I can almost feel and hear the peaceful tranquillity of walking through the forest. Superb light and shadow.:thumbs:

Nice shot for this theme Jean, you have nailed the composition beautifully and i like the conversion to mono. Great contrast with the light and shadows.

Wow! I'm really thrilled you all like it. :D:D:D

I was very unsure about posting it and to be honest, I walk along this path nearly every day and have photographed it in all weathers and nearly always bin them, because they're so familiar. But the light last Monday when I took this (trying to get something for the TP Day) was sparkling bright and almost spring-like. Today was more like November! I think I was just lucky on Monday. ;)

May I just echo everything that has been said about your image Jean. Great light, wonderfully captured by your good self. Sure luck plays a small part in our photographs sometimes but you have seen the image and really made it really sing. Iain

Shame about the mountains and snow, I'd love to see your interpretation ;)... still, it's a cracking shot, the mono really works well.

Thank you, Iain - you're very kind. :)

At least not getting mountins, etc, means I didn't make a hash of it!! I'm pleased you like the one I did get. :D

Jean, that is a beautiful shot. Very tranquil, excellent take on the theme and worthy of hanging on the wall. The B/W conversion works very well.

Jenny

Thanks, Jenny. I have wondered about printing it - perhaps I'll give it a go. :)

Jean

This week's theme seems to have multiple interpretations, and with a very busy week I decided the best thing would be to set myself as many 'mini projects' as I could think of - and hope to get one of them done. The only real chance I had to use my camera was yesterday, when we went to a woodworkers' fair in Somerset. I tried several of my ideas, but nothing was working very well, then I 'saw' the one I thought would be the hardest - A Multistable Image, ie an image that changes as you look at it, or can be viewed in different ways. It's very simple, but I was quite pleased to see it!

A Multistable Image: (Probably best viewed after a few glasses of wine :D )

If your eyes are now totally confused, here's the original. Apparently it's a Dovetail Jig! Well, that's what the man said. :)

C & C most welcome. :)

Jean

Interesting shot Jean, i like the abstract feel to it. Ive had my laptop turned every way to take a look and it does have that optical illusion to it. Im glad you posted the source of the picture to put it into context what it actually is.

I like the subtle changes in colour in the metal. Odd looking object close up so good to see it in situ.

That works very well. My eyes initially fixated on the black being the solid object against a white background. How wrong I was :)
