jeangenie's 52 for 2010 Pt 2 - Wks 45 Share,47 Distortion & 48 Lead: Catch up Part 4!

Endings... love the processing Jean, agree about the lower left hand corner... the luggage is even better though.

Electric... that took me about 1 second to spot it ;)... that's how long it took me to scroll down far enough to confirm it of course. I did think of the same thing, but had nothing I could use as a prop. it works for the theme. Not sure on the DOF but if that's what I think it is, you had precisely no control over that anyway

"Mr. Blue Sky" great single LOL !!!!!!!!!!

Good shot and very good interpretation of the theme, Oh clever one

excellent

Hi Maria - thank you. :)

I guessed you might recognise it! But one second - slow coach! ::lol: As you said, I had no control of the dof. :D

Thanks Nicki - you've got great taste in music. ;)

Well done to all those who guessed (with or without help from the Google gods):

'twas:

imo, one of the great bands of the 70s.

For the anoraks - the back cover

... and the inside of the double album:

As you can see the album (vinyl) is well-loved and dog-eared.

... and especially for Nicki - a link to listen to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98P-gu_vMRc&feature=related

Apart from being a great track, this is the only time I can recall Jeff Lynne appearing without his shades!

Jean

How many Wilburys links can you squeeze into this year?

Very interesting, Jean. It is strange that they are certainly in my era and I had heard of them but non of their music sounds familiar.

Jenny

Despite being from Brum originally, I think they were more successful in the States than over here. Both my children were born in the 70s and I guess I was at home a lot with the radio on!

Jean

a brilliant album and a great post Jean :D

Glad you like it Maria. :)

The Travelling Wilburys? I'd totally forgotten about them (sorry for forgetting you, George, Roy, Jeff, Bob etc .... I can't remember who else was involved :bang: ) ELO was very much of the 70s - and the Wilburys early-mid 80s, I think. I'll have to work on possible links - where's that crowbar! :D :)

Jean

Clever take on the electric theme Jean, didnt get the answer myself.... only a whippersnapper so it was before my time all the vynl stuff... haha.

Bang on theme.

You don't know what you missed Dan !

I can't believe I didn't get that I was only looking at that album cover the other day when we cleared out the loft. ELO were one of the best bands of that era.

Mike - you didn't chuck it out did you.:eek::eek: :(

Thanks for the comments :)

Jean

There are a whole pile of pots, jars and tubes on my dressing table just waiting to transform me into a gorgeous, glamorous femme fatale - well that's what the adverts promised! (More a miracle than a transformation! :'( ) but it least it was an idea for this week's theme.

Then yesterday, we went to a local agricultural show, and there in the Reptile tent I found an even better transformation:

(Scroll down now if you don't like snakes)

The snake:

This exotic looking lady transforms herself by just shedding her old skin:

The Cast off (1)

The Cast off (2)

Now wouldn't it be great to be able to do that!

It's a shame the lady was too camera-shy to let me get a front view - she had a beautiful pink tongue which she flicked gently over my hand, but she just wouldn't keep still! :)

C & c very welcome. :)

Jean

Catching up here...

Endings: Lovely processing to fit the subject matter, and I find it difficult to choose between them. I think the luggage shot is the better picture, though. I don't think you need a crowbar, either - that style of travel ended long ago!

Electric: errrm....I'm afraid to say that I was always such a "square" (remember that term?) that I have never heard of them or their music. :exit:

Transform: What an interesting set of pictures, and bang on theme. I wish I could change my skin like that. It's just a pity you couldn't freeze the motion in the first one a bit more. Don't forget your camera is capable of very high ISO. What a beautiful snake - do you know what kind it is?

Some clever thinking there for electric and transform, well done.
I agree with Tracer had the first cast off image been sharper you would have nailed it

I knew I recognised that first image - ELO - of course!

Nice idea for transform. Snake-keeping is what started me off in photography. I agree about the freezing the motion, but you've captured the colours of the royal python (python regius) very nicely.

I used to keep two of these amongst about 24 others - I predictably called one of them 'Monty'

Phil

I'm getting lost this week about who I've commented on and who I haven't. Your snake is one I've desperately been trying to avoid though Jean ;)

As already pointed out the movement in the first has spoilt it somewhat, but as Phil says you've got some great colours in there. I'm not sure about the second and third either. Looks like a touch of camera shake to me. You've not left the exif intact which is a shame as it might confirm whether I'm just seeing things or not :)

What a shame it is not entirely in focus,

Nice to capture them shedding and yes I often wonder why we can't do this instead of all these lotions and potions  we have to buy.!!

We have 3 of these if you want practise :D

I don't think you need a crowbar, either - that style of travel ended long ago! The porter's trolley isn't something you see these days - let alone 'proper' suitcases! I'm glad you like the shot.

Electric: errrm....I'm afraid to say that I was always such a "square" (remember that term?) that I have never heard of them or their music. :exit: They were never a huge hit in the UK - but they tried to use both rock and classical elements in their music and blended say, a rock bass line with cellos and violins, which gave a unique sound for that time.

Transform: What an interesting set of pictures, and bang on theme. I wish I could change my skin like that. It's just a pity you couldn't freeze the motion in the first one a bit more. Don't forget your camera is capable of very high ISO. What a beautiful snake - do you know what kind it is?

Tracer and Dade - I was kicking myself for not getting sharper images of the snake and the skins but the marquee was so crowded I could hardly lift the camera - let alone change settings - and I was using Mr JG's 18-200mm at close to the 200 end. There was a whole crowd of children keen to touch the snake and I got some good pictures of little hands!

I knew I recognised that first image - ELO - of course! A blast from the past, eh? :D

Many thanks for the ID, Phil - I thought that was what the chap said but wasn't sure! How interesting that snakes lead you to photography. I can easily see the attraction - the colours and skin textures are beautiful and they're very graceful. I am, of course, now wondering what you called the 'other' one? :D

Phil

I'm getting lost this week about who I've commented on and who I haven't. Your snake is one I've desperately been trying to avoid though Jean ;) :(Sorry - I know they're not everybody's favourite creatures.

Thanks for the comments Darren - I've got lots of excuses for the poor quality - as itemised above! - and I'd love a chance to try again under less manic conditions. And with the crowd of people joslting round, I could quite easily add camera shake to the list. :'(

Three python regius? Wow! I think they are totally awesome. Do you find yourself just sitting and watching them - they're so beautiful. :)

Jean

Im glad you explained the your electric shot eventually Jean:lol: and great idea, you certainly had a good response to the enigma.

Snakes are a tricky subject. My friend has over 150 of them from eggs right through to old men. Ive had a few goes and its key to get a faster shutter speed as you can. I havn't seen the exif data but you could Bump up the iso a bit to get a faster shutter speed it might make them a bit noisy but that can be adjusted.

Hi Jean, in spite of being a bit of a wildlife freak, I'm not much of a fan of snakes but what a fantastic idea for transform  Such a pity about the movement, but it is impossible to set things up nicely at these shows.

Well done.

Jenny

Thanks Chris. The 'snake day' was oa day of several steep learning curves - and tried togging show jumping for the first time, as well - and then read an excellent thread on how to do it the very next day! :bang: I'm definitely going to look for an opportunity to put the excellent advice into practice. In fact, noise isn't a problem with my camera, so I've no excuse really! :)

Thanks, Jenny.

I feel so out of touch. But just wanted to say yay for some great, imaginative pics!

Hi, Leanne  Thanks for popping in - I'm really struggling to keep up with other people's threads this year (and my own aren't fully up to scratch!), but I'm really glad you like what you see! :)

Jean

I knew immediately what I wanted to do for this theme, but the opportunity hasn't materialised, so, since I can't think of anything else to do, and I am waiting for an important phone call, here is a photo of my phone. I'm sure you all wanted to see that! :| Sorry! :(

I quite understand if nobody can find anything to say about it - I think I should have taken it from a lower angle, and in fact, I'll go back and try again, but I wanted to get something posted before the deadline. :)

Thanks for looking. :)

Jean

Nice looking phone :) I like the minimal approach you've taken with just the outline showing, but I think keeping a little more in focus would have added a little more impact. Something top left which looks like a puff of smoke, but is certainly a lighter area which needs burning out. We all know what it's like when things don't go to plan :)

Thanks - the 'puff of smoke' is light. I really needed a better set up for this - taken on a black card on the kitchen table isn't ideal! I juggled with the dof but it didn't look any better! :'(

It looks a little soft on my screen but I like the blackness of it.

You're probably right - it was a slow shutter speed and I should have used the cable release. :bang:

Anyway, I've had another go - and with less light (an hour or so later) I had even more problems with getting it sharp, so a tried a different approach:

Version 2:

Jean

Hi Jean, I actually prefer your first version. As Darren says, very minimalist. It's just a pity that it is not quite sharp enough.

Very nice phone, though. I wouldn't be able to figure out how to use something like that!

Hope all goes well with the new grandchild. It obviously knows the weather is not good enough to make an appearance yet.

Hey, what is happening with your gardening thread? A new grandchild is no excuse to neglect it.

Jenny

Hi Jean,

Thank you for the link to ELO - just been having a listen. They're a group that I've heard of but I've never listened to any of their music before.
(:) and who said that TP was just for learning about photography?)

I missed your snake week, but that was an ingenious take on the theme.
Absolutely beautiful creature. As you've said it's a shame about the movement, but given the circumstances I think you did brilliantly to get anything at all in that marquee.
And I'm absolutely fascinated by the shedding shots - not only is it an intriguing process that you've captured, I think with a crop there are some great abstracts images to be had from those shots too.

After you've gone to the effort of re-shooting mobile, I really want to love the second shot, but I'm torn between the two.
I prefer the angle of the second, but love the minimalism of the black and silver in the first.

Best of luck with the impending arrival of your grandchild . . . hope it all goes well and I'm sure that you'll be able to crowbar some baby shots into the coming themes ;)

My vote goes to #1 Jean, I like the silver on black effect. It could be an advertisement photograph. #2 is good too, I like the angle and dof but #1 imo is the 'cleaner' image. Iain

Of the 2 images have to vote for the 1st - guess this may mean back to the drawing board given you werent keen on the angle ;)
It will be worth it, each time you learn something - I mostly learn to be patient and breathe, lol

I'm cross with myself for not taking the time and trouble to get it sharper, and in my imagination I saw it at a lower, sharper angle. :bang: It's actually very easy to use - has to be for me - but it's quite new and I haven't got to grips with the camera yet! :(

The gardening/growing thread is on a go-slow, I'm afraid. I've got a lot of photos to pp but life is hectic at the moment and the weather hasn't helped - and we're still anxiously awaiting the new arrival. I'll catch up soon. :)

Thanks for the comments and feedback, Sarah. You're very welcome to work some of your creative magic on the cast skin shots if you wish. :) They are already cropped but I'll post the originals up if you want to play. :D

I think I prefer the first mobile shot, too. :bang: And yes, the camera - and the crowbar - are already packed and ready to go.

My vote goes to #1 Jean, I like the silver on black effect. It could be an advertisement photograph. #2 is good too, I like the angle and dof but #1 imo is the 'cleaner' image. Iain

Thanks Iain, for the kind words. I need to go back and do this properly when I've got a bit more time. :)

I liked the first version of mobile. It was not immediately obvious to me what it was and I had to work it out. That made it more interesting than the second picture.

Thanks, Sue. I was hoping it wouldn't immediately look like a phone - you've made my day! :D

Of the 2 images have to vote for the 1st - guess this may mean back to the drawing board given you werent keen on the angle ;)
It will be worth it, each time you learn something - I mostly learn to be patient and breathe, lol

Thanks Dade, and you're right about learning from each attempt. I'm not the most patient of people and whenever I rush a shot I always regret it. :bonk: :rules:

Jean

I like them both but actually prefer the first - very clean and minimalist.

I hope all goes well with the new grandchild - looking forward to seeing some baby pics. :)
