Japanese earthquake and tsunami

Holy moly! I didn't realise the scale of that at first. The water looked like a normal wave, then the camera panned left to what I thought were people standing on a beach only there were buildings floating past!

That is frightening, an unstoppable force.

Let's hope that there was enough warning for the locals to evacuate the area.

Things are not so bad in land, partners brother lives in Tokorozawa-shi, said it was a shock to other earthquakes they have usually but wasn't to bad. just a few fires around. been on Skype with him most the morning. Thoughts go out to the ones who are feeling the full force of whats happening

Shocking footage this morning of cars trying to escape the wave, huge boats being swept under bridges

Yes the footage has had to be cut in places because you could clearly see people were about to die. No easy way of saying that but it's true. The death toll is going to be much higher than the current reported 19 dead surely. My thoughts go out to them.

shocking.

the power of nature

Can't help but wonder if the people in the cars driving down the road near the end of the vid as the water approached had any idea or not......

Absolutely shocking, the force of mother nature is immense.

Shocking and sad; goes to show how small & fragile we are on this planet!

It must be terrifying to see all that water coming at you, unfortunately it's also fascinating so instead of running people just stand and watch.

Just watching a special report on the BBC, they showed some footage from a supermarket in Tokyo when it hits, all the staff run to the shelves to stop bottles falling off, a bit risky when you consider the weight on those shelves and the fact you don't know how big the quake is going to be.

Also an unfortunate consequence of this disaster is that it gives Gaddafi an ideal window of opportunity to wreak terror on his own people while the worlds media are distracted.

Oh my goodness. I sat there for a few seconds thinking it was *just* a flood - I didn't realise it was still moving! Those poor people :(

* not meant in a derogatory way

That footage is just unbeleivable, the size of them ships just getting pushed over land. It is something that cannot be comprehended.

spike

indeed, 2:30 theres a moving white car bottom left of shot clearly about to get swamped..

shocking, my thoughts go out to all of those affected..

It's not done yet either by the looks of it.

Our West Coast offices in the US are on alert for the fallout now as well. Due to arrive in about an hour or so :(

Been working from home today so I've watched it unfold on the news - devastating.

Seeing that video of the tsunami smashing through those fields and into a village sent a shiver down my spine. For those living there, it must have felt like the end of the world has come.

My heart unequivocally goes to all those lost and to the families that have lost. Once again this incredible planet demonstrates its will to change.

I have watched since the first loss of life was announced and now that count is up to 1000+. :shake:

Imagine what the effect would have been if the Japanese had not taken appropriate measures for earthquake protection in their buildings!
Waiting to see the effect on the low-lying islands mid-pacific, hope they can survive any residual waves.

Can you believe the way the road split in picture 36??

/edit lol photon got there first.

Been watching news on and off today and some of the footage is unbelievable. Really feel for the people affected by this disaster. As I am writing this they are saying on Sky News that a guy taking photo's of the waves has been washed out to sea on the West coast of America.....hope he ain't one of our forum members

Our parent factory is in Sendai, I know many people who work and live there and have visited several times. Have managed to contact a few people, all "okay". No idea where they are or if there homes etc are still intact but of course so glad that so far everyone sems to have had enough notice and got to safety. As everyone has mentioned, shocking to see the footage of people, cars, houses etc becoming so insignificant and getting swept away.

shocking stuff. thoughts go out to anyone affected.

Now saying that a nuclear power station is leaking radiation vapour grossly above acceptable limits and they are evacuating people from a radius of 6 miles.

Yeah just watching that the now...as if it wasn't bad enough.

I totally respect Japan. I've never been there but I often hear how well their society seems to work.

I've just realised how many Japanese products impact my everyday life;

Home entertainment setup (Denon, Sony), car (Honda), bike (Shimano), fishing (Shimano), phone (Sony), laptop (Toshiba), consoles (Sony, Nintendo), tools (Makita) and camera (Canon) of course.

So sending my best wishes to all!

Andy

Lets hope the two nuclear power stations don't do a Chernobyl as the water cooling has failed.

Just woke up to a video of the reactor exploding. As if they don't have enough to contend with. I hope it's not as bad as it looks. A nuclear fallout really wouldn't help the rescue effort. A friend of mine is in Rapid-uk who are based just down the road from me. I believe they are on their way. I can't imagine the horrors those guys will witness.

theyre saying its just steam at the moment on BBC news so not as bad as it looks. the actual containment is not likely to be breached theyre also saying.

also the death toll is shooting up.. 300-400 alone in one costal town :(

I was in Thailand at the time of the 2004 Asian Tsunami, which eventually killed over 200,000 people in a dozen countries, so this brings back vivid memories. :'(

That same reactor exploded this morning (at least, the building its cased in collapsed after what looked like an explosion from a distance).

Scary stuff.

Thoughts with everybody involved.
