Week 18 - Simple

Week 19 - Linear
Linear.jpg

I'm quite happy with the way that the tree shot turned out and like the colours, but not sure about the subject.
And as for Linear....umm......I'm really not sure about it. thats the reason i've taken a while to post. i was trying to find something better.
Mind you, count how many "linears" can you spot???

Cheers in advance for C+C

Oooo - lots of catching up for me!

Week 16 - Longing: Just what I need - a holiday in the sun. :) It's such a 'feel-good factor' how could I not like it.

Week 17 - Dark: It's not just the subject matter that makes me love this :D It's very well done and I love the subtle mono treatment.

Week 18 - Simple: The tree's a great idea. I notice there's a footpath sign in the background and I wonder what the view would be like from over there, so the hedge is behind the tree? It's a good take on the theme, though and well spotted. :)

Week 19 - Linear: I think this topic was much, much harder than it sounded and you've certainly got lots of lines. I'm not quite sure what to look at first, though, and I wonder if concentrating on one component, (the seat or the bin perhaps) and throwing the rest a little oof would have given a bit more impact? Sorry - I hope this doesn't sound negative - I think you've spotted a very good combination of lines and a slightly different composition would have given it more impact.

You've done a great job in catching up. I dread getting behind with this challenge because I'm sure I'd never get up to date! Good stuff

Jean

I like simple, the tree is nicely framed against the cloudy backdrop. The colours are good and work well. Not sure about Linear, there's loads of lines, but I think Jean has hit it on the head, there's too much going on, and not enough to grab you to a specific component.

Well done in catching up

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

I totally agree with all the comments.
I'm going to keep an eye out for Linear and see if I can improve on it. sure it won't be hard. I just wish I'd had a bit more inspiration.
I quite like the tree shot personally, but I'm still not sure how it fits the theme that much :( maybe these are a couple of opportunities for re-shoots.

Jean: where abouts is it? I still can't see it anywhere. my eyesight is pretty bad, mind.

I like your linear James - the challenge 'how many linears can you spot' is great :) Okay I think Jean has a point about 'what' to focus on but, overall and taken as a 'collection' of linears it works a treat and makes me go back time and time again to look for another :)

And that is good :D

And simple - yes both simple and complex in one go :) I like it :)

Things I've learnt this fortnight:

1. there are far too many "simple" and "linear" things too choose from, and being spoilt for choice is always frustrating!
2. leaving things until the last minute rarely helps gain inspiration.
3. everything in our daily lives are both "simple" and complex at the same time depending upon how you look at them and think about them.
4. finding something "simple", yet interesting, is a daunting challenge.

love your simple image the colours are great and it is indeed simple :D

The background in the linear shot lets it down imo but i love the idea.

Simple: I realy like the clarity and the clours of this shot, which are the first things that hit me. I have moved it around a bit on my screen, and feel I would have cropped some of the greenary in the bottom out, but great shot!

Linear: again creat colours! I see what others mean about it being busy overall, have you thought about cropping really tight, and just haveing the bench and bin with the hedge in the background!!

well done :clap::clap:

Longing, good idea and on the whole works well, top right catches my eye a little.

Dark works well too but the simple and linear shots are a little messy for me, the bush at the bottom of the tree bugs me on the first and there is just too much going on in the linear shot with the greenhouse and house in the background, without them it would be a fine shot.

Oh dear, Oh dear. :nono:
My apologies, I'm weeks behind now :( been a bit busy i'm afraid. It's time for a major catch-up I think!

ok, lets begin:

Week 19 - RESHOOT - Linear:

I was really unhappy with my original shot, so here is my re-shoot. Skegness Pier last weekend.
Week19-Linear.jpg

---------------------------------

Week 20 - Emotion:
This one was also shot in Skegness. My Nephew-to-be, Matthew on a bungee-trampoline-type-thing, which the strap you in to and fire you a good 30 ft in the air. I have lots of shots to choose from that I took last weekend, but I'm particularly happy with this one, and I think this one sums up quite a few different emotions all in one picture:
Fear, Euphoria, Freedom, Happiness, amusement, nervousness, apprehension and exhilaration;to name but a few.

What do you think?
yes, it did take me ages to get the positioning and timing just right, but to be fair i did have about 150 opportunities.
Week20-Emotion.jpg

---------------------------------

Week 21 - Complex:
Probably not everyone's cup of tea, so to speak, but it's my new hobby (big boy's toy). It's a HPI Savage off-road, Nitro-Methane powered, Radio-controlled car. and until i managed to break it, and set about dismantiling most of it, i didn't really apriciate how complex it was. the picture doesn't really show it all that well, but you get the gist ;)...
Week21-Complex.jpg

---------------------------------

Week 22 - Time:
Quite simply...a clock; not a lot of thought went into this one, but as we have a rather nice time-piece hanging on our bedroom wall, I thought I may as well have a go, Lit only by a desk lamp in our office...
Week22-Time.jpg

emotion and time really stand out for me, very nicely done and well done for catching up in style

Cheers, Ruth! :) i've got to catch up with everyone else's 52s now also. should be good though, I'm looking forward to getting round to it.

I'm going to try and keep on top of mine from now on, will probably be difficult, mind.

James, great way to catch up. Love emotion, that's worked really well. Complex is good, and an understatement I'm sure on how tricky those things are. The linear reshoot works well, so many lines. Time, I quite like, the lighting has aged the clock nicely too, but I feel it might be better with the end of both hands showing.

Cheers, John. thanks for the feedback. I agree with you on the clock-shot, but i'm still relatively happy with it. I tried it with the hands in a few different positions and from different angles, but this one looked more aesthetically pleasing for some reason. It was a little rushed to be honest.
Cheers for the great comments!

Worth the wait I think, and yes I'll agree with the others emotion and time are great efforts.

Mark

I hate to sound boring but I also like Emotion and Time best out of these - I really think Emotion is a cracking shot. Well done for persevering to get what you wanted

I'm not keen on the PP of your Linear re-shoot but that's more personal preference than anything else.

Hey, that's a fair point. cheers for the feedback. yeah, i was going for a sepia-type finish, but didn't really pull it off :( i think i still prefer it to the original, though.

Thanks for the comments on the emotion shot too, I'm really quite pleased with it :) had to move around a bit and cunningly nudge a barrier out of the way slightly in order to get the right position.

I´m so so sorry, I seem to have missed your thread completely :(

Well done for catching up, I think if I got that far behind I would just give up, so I´ve got lots of respect for you.

Linear, I love the angle of this but it looks a bit green on my monitor. Nonetheless it´s an inspired shot

Emotion, absolutely fantastic :clap::clap:

Complex, I do get the jist but I would like to see more detail, the shallow DoF is too shallow for me.

Time, it certainly looks like it has been a round for a long time  I too would have liked to see both hands fully, failing that maybe a squre crop

Once again, well done for catching up and apologies for missing you out :bang::bang:

RESHOOT of Linear is much better and kudos to you for taking the time to do it.

Emotion is really good, I did and ditched something similar, yours is heaps better though.

Complex fits the theme well and its a nice pic, the shed in the top left is slightly distracting.

Time, a very strong shot, I tried something similar but yours just seems to work better, well done.

I really like the colouring of linear reshoot, it is very striking, would have liked to see it straight. Emotion and complex also two good shots however it is time that is my favourite of the bunch. Well done for catching up, I will be doing the same in the next dayor two!!!

Week 23 - Inspiration

Ok, so this week's shot represents my inspiration. or probably more correctly my motivation, but I think they overlap massively, so it's ok.
I have been a massive motorsport fan since I was tiny, and always used to go racing with my dad. I've never driven professionally but have always wanted to work in the motorsport industry as I find the engineering and technology fascinating.
I completed a Motorsport engineering degree two years ago, and now find myself as one of the lucky few who have landed a career in making Formula one cars.
Once a fortnight we root for our team, and keep our fingers crossed that our hard work will eventually pay off (and pay us with a nice bonus ;) ).
Being the British GP this weekend, I was lucky enough to get a free ticket, and went along with my D40 and 70-300mmVR to record the action.

I'll add a link to the other photos soon, for those of you who are into that sort of thing

anyway.... at this moment in time, this is My inspiration:

Never had a go at motorsport photography but it looks fraught with potential problems, you have done well, its a good image and very fitting.

Look forward to seeing the rest of your set.

Inspiration, beautifully done! and I am sure it is much much harder than it looks to get it to look so good. well done

I agree with the other comments - this must be a very difficult branch of photography! :D

The car looks nice and sharp - well caught. And congratulations on having what must be a dream job for someone with your passion. :)

Jean

I agree, and well done you for putting the sffort in to getting qualified for the job in the first place

Thanks guys! I do enjoy it :) shame I don't get to travel with the team, but I do get the odd ticket for the British GP, which is always a bonus ;)

Nicely framed. I guess these F1 cars are not easy to catch because of speed. Well done

 you're not wrong! I think I threw myself in at the deep end with these to be honest.
It was my first motorsport photography outing. I recon I'd have struggled to find anything more difficult to photograph. :bonk:

To be honest, looking back over them, I think that this one was my favourite from the day now:

nice one, it almost looks a bit like a tilt and shift pic

 I should have zoomed out a bit and used a smaller DOF ;) then it would have looked even more like it. Think there's a touch of scheimpflug principle as well :lol::lol:

Nicely capture James, sorry I missed this. This sort of shot isn't easy.. I spent most of the weekend trying...

Hey Guys!

Long time, no see! i've been a busy boy i'm afraid. been preparing stuff for the wedding, actually getting married, then having an amazing honeymoon for 3 weeks, then house sitting for the in-laws for a month it's all been a bit hectic.

Anyway, I'm back now and thought that Fresh starts would be an apt point to get back into the swing of the 52.

Hope you are all well! :)

Re-Shoot - LIGHT

Well you've certainly been packing a lot in haven't you. Congratulations to you and Mrs jammy_c

Fresh Start, very clever idea I like it.
Passion... looks a little bit soft to me!
Light, nice trails I really must do one of these myself.

Cheers Mark, thanks for the comments. was thinking the same about the passion shot myself. I added a very obvious "softglow", but maybe over did it a little.

Hello! Haven't seen yours before. I like all 3. Nice work!
That's because I've been hibernating over the summer.
Thanks, please have a look all the others too and let me know what you think. Be as brutal as you like.
cheers.

Hey - congratulations to you and Mrs jammy c! And a big welcome back. :)

Fresh Start: yep - spot on theme (espcially since it really is a Fresh Start for you)

Passion: I agree with Mark about the softness. The purple background is a nice touch - purple for passion. :D

Light: I like the composition and the separate strands of red light. I suppose getting the same separation for the oncoming headlights was a total no-no, though. Still a good take on the theme. :)

Jean

Hi there!

Not seen this thread before, but well done on picking the 52 back up.
And a big congratulations to you and Mrs Jammy C . . . that sounds like the best reason in the world for getting behind with this.

I'll go back and have a read of the rest of your thread when I have time, but for now there's 3 very likeable shots right here!

Fresh Start :  Great idea. So obvious now that I've seen it and I'm amazed that nobody else thought of it.
One niggle - I'd maybe like the head of the toothbrush to be a touch sharper.

Passion : I absolutely LOVE this one. I agree that you've gone a bit OTT with the "softglow", but apart from that it's brilliant. The concept, composition and colours are fantastic.

Reshoot : Yep. I really like light trails and it's something I've been wanting to try myself. And just to complete it, you've got some nice sky and interesting greenery at the side of the road too.

Welcome back

Fresh Start - great idea, and as JG says, can't think why no one else thought about it. I too would like to see just a little more focus on the head of the toothbrush.

Passion - I remember those days  :naughty:, a tad soft but great (and clean) interpretation of the theme. I'm assuming you 'borrowed' them from a 'friend' ;)

Reshoot Light - Light trails at their best so well done Mr Married Man, and Congratulations to you both :clap::clap:
