Jammy_c's 52! - Making a "Fresh Start" for my 52!

So, for this week I have decided that i'm going to shoot the identity picture for week 9, and also do another re-shoot.

as I've had some differing comments about the crowds photo, I thought i'd re-shoot with better lighting and a straight horizon.

what d'yall think? :shrug:

i think the reshoot of the sheep is much better forground. i would have been nice to get the clouds from the other shot but we cant control them can we! the only thing i would say is that its a shame about the flare on the right side of the pic but messing with gimp should sort that out.

I think that's better too. The sheep in the foreground pop out of the picture and form a nice leading line into the shot. :clap::clap:

Is the horizon a touch off level? :exit:
 
I'm in two minds about the re-shoot - I like the sky in 1, but prefer the foreground in 2. I also don't mind the intentional angle of the first shot.

As for wealth - great idea and I like the DOF. It has made me think about taking it one step further though - I think it would be great to create some flowers or fruit shaped objects out of the money and have there literally growing on a tree... now all we need is someone good at origami!

Well done for taking the time for a re-shoot btw - I like your dedication to your 52 :clap:
 
Catch up time:

Love the wealth shot! Very good idea - cleverly thought out and done!

The crowds - 2nd better for me although perhaps a little straightening needed and that right hand flare is a little distracting - how menacing can sheep look :)?

Identity - clever bit of processing :) Love the dof effect (is it blurred?) and the detail on the card is neatly done - good interpretation! :clap:

yeah, it was fairly blurred from the original shot as i took it in aperture preference mode, but i added a bit more gaussian blur afterwards (I wish I hadn't now tbh! :thinking:)

Things i've learnt this week:

1. focusing when you're not looking through the viewfinder is NOT easy.:shrug:

2. leaving on manual focus means you have to be very accurate in remembering how far you need to stand from the camera. :bonk:

3. I still have lots to learn about using GIMP properly! :shake:

4. Layers confuse me and do things that are annoying because i don't really know what i'm doing. Anyone know of a good tutorial? :thinking:

5. if you rush post processing then it'll take you longer in the long run because you won't be happy with the result, then want to redo it! :bang:

Loving identity, the image is great and the changes to the driving licience really add to it imo :)
 
You have been a busy bee this week! I'm striken with guilt for only doing one measly little picture. :bat:

I like the new Crowd picture - although I liked the angle of the first shot better. You can't please everybody!) Your sheep are all still paying attention, too. I think I might have cropped a little off the right to get rid of the flare, but the overall lighting is lovely.

Your Identity shot is excellent and made me laugh - great detail. :clap: It's well done too. :clap::clap:

I can totally identify with #1,2 and 5 - but even more so with #4. I need Layers explaining in words of one syllable - a total idiot's guide. :lol:

A very good and amusing shot. Love the processing on it. I agree completely on 1,2 and 5 of your points. I'm making more use of layers, but not really any good at it, and every image editing package I know less than 10% of what they do...

yeah, getting there, but it'll take me a while to master it. i understand the basics now atleast. :)
 
Week 10 - Wisdom

Or i suppose more specifically "searching for wisdom" was the concept I had in mind.

I'm sure you can work out what the symbol represents...

Before people start talking about the high ISO, the image was printed out on a sheet of A4, and attached to a window, so the majority of the graining was the patterning of the paper coming through. I tried removing this, and managed, but decided it looked better this way. i hope you agree.

Honest C&C always welcome, as usual. :) cheers.
 
High ISO/grain shots generally work really with with B&W and it looks great in this shot! I think I would have liked to see a bit more eye, but I do like the very dark, almost sillhouette image you've gone for. Good work!

:thumbs: Cheers, yeah I decided to try the silhouette effect after a while trying to get the shot I had in mind with the paper attached to a white door and taking colour shots. It just didn’t have the impact I wanted.
As I was next to a window, I thought it would be quite cool to try a very dark/moody :suspect: silhouette shot and see how that came out.

I think it’s a vast improvement from the originals. I’m also quite proud of the fact that the only “PP-ing” that was done was to add the border and change to B&W. :)
 
I like it, nicely shot and composed! Good realisation of the theme too!

Only niggle is the border which detracts a little with the light line by your face

Might be because I'm viewing on a black themed TPF?

Nonetheless well done on an early and clever entry! :)

I like the crowds scene, but prefer the sky in the first one and the foreground in the second. If only nature would cooperate :( And I like the slope in the first one, it draws the eye through.

Wealth - what a great interpretation and certainly can remember my parents saying this to me throughout my childhood. It's such a simple idea but really well executed. :clap::clap:

Wisdom - as an acupuncturist trained in Chinese Medicine I got the implication straight away. Good use of lighting and I like the composition and the apparent grain. Like the B&W conversion too :thumbs:

Cheers :thumbs: I definitely think it looked better after I added the border, but I guess it’s personal opinion, maybe I could have used a brighter colour, but didn’t want it to distract from the image. Does anyone else feel this?

Like the crowd shot. Nice idea but think it works better in the reshoot.

I wish money grew on trees. Really like the interpretation and the shot is well done.

You're so creative with your 52 project and I'm enjoying viewing each weeks offering and this week doesn't disappoint. Great idea I really like it. The B&W conversion gives it a lovely pensive mood. Very nice :clap:

Very clever. Having been practising a Chinese martial art for a couple of years, I was wondering about doing something similar but couldn't figure out how. That's worked really well, the conversion is excellent, and the lighting works. As John said, the frame does spoil it slightly by the face.
 
Interesting shot. On the monitor I'm currently using (calibrated) it is not quite dark enough to be a silhouette but not light enough to convey any detail. It makes me think of some Dr Who type faceless character (I think that's down to the fact I can't see the eye, but there is a bit of light just under the eye). If that's the effect you were after :thumbs:, you've achieved it. I also like the soft patterned effect the paper has given which I don't think would be quite the same if it was pure white.

As for the frame - I don't like it but then I often think a frame isn't necessary - a great image will always stand out.
 
Cheers, yeah. it was the effect that i was aiming for. as for the paper, I pretty much had no choice in what i used :lol: just some cheap rubbish copier paper that my dad managed to "borrow" :naughty: from work. :lol:

i'm not 100% sure about the border either. it looked good just after i did it. i'm thinking that maybe it's too think now aswell. :thinking:

Just catching up with things, and seem to have missed several of your shots, sorry.

I like the relationship shot, particularly the angle. The twins (not identical) have lovely expressions on their faces that you have caught fantastically.

The poverty shot is also very good and the B&W adds to the run down feel. Wouldn't it be funny if it was in face PDiddy's holiday home!! :lol:

I was a little spooked out with how close our photos were for both week 11 and 12. scary :runaway:

Why would using a polarising filter be cheating ? I used a Macro filter for my Poverty shot, they are just tools to help get the effect you want, surely ?
