Daily Jake's 365 Challenge

Some good shots there Jake, looks like inspiration has jumped up and got you again.

Thanks Sarah! I think it has :D

Jake Day 75 is just bloody awesome, great panning and great colours

Thanks Vince! :D
I was glad to get a few shots between the rain and the driving! I did fall over though and get myself and the camera all muddy! :bang::lol:

Great catch up Jake much better than your recent efforts :D

Castle Coombe is a superb shot - panning is not as easy as it looks

Ace shots Jake! Castle Coombs is a good track!... Ace panning!

That's good for a first panning shot!

Love the spring buds, so nice to see and lovely to capture - gives us hope amid all this cold weather!

Thanks Lynn! I think I need a Monopod to help me out, and a longer lens!

I'm hoping the nice weather isn't far away now!

That is god for some first panning, that's the thing that took me a while to master with the cycling shots I used to do. I never used a monopod when I did it, but a trick a pro photographer gave me at the velodrome was to always make sure that any anti shake or anti vibration was turned off and to set your focus point where the head of the rider would be, which works for both cycle racing and motorbikes, so with cars, you need to set the point or group of points where the part of the car you want sharpest in the frame is.

I don't think I can group points on my 40D, and if I can I don't know how! I did have my Anti Shake turned on however!

Anti shake apparently slows down the focus and therefore makes it harder to focus on objects moving quickly. The pro at the velodrome was really helpful when I was just starting out & I spent most of the day with him hanging over the banking trying to pan with the riders going past & when one of those riders is Chris Hoy, you know it's going to be fast! If you cant group your points, just set either one in the centre if you want the car in the centre of the shot or if a motorbike, the top middle point as that is where the head will be & then keep that point on the car/rider as you pan & it should in theory be sharp.

I didn't know that! Thanks for the advice! There was some guys at Combe at the weekend taking photos, one of them had a massive L series lens but I was too shy to go and speak to him!:bonk:
I'll have a look and see if it is possible! :) I was using the right top point for the shots, to keep the car off centre! I find it hard to use the rule of 3rds for track, as there isn't much else!

Doing catch up (hi, Jake!)

I really like your light trails - excellent long lines of them and that sky is great

I like the statue and the backround fence works very well with it - nice processing as well!

The gnome is cute and the colours nice and strong, but do you think "I bought him for my Mum for Mothers Day this year. Saw him sat outside my door..." is a subtle hint from Mum?:lol:

Nice job on the portrait of your friend, like both car shots but the second is my favourite of them, love the angle and dof on Love, you little romantic, you! and I know we are seeing 'signs' of Spring everywhere........but, where IS Spring?

That's a good filler Jake & proves you can get bloody sharp focus, so you will be well away with the flower shots :)
As for pro photographers, introduce yourself as a beginner, most are more than happy to give a bit of advice when they are not shooting. Either that, or email one of them who's work you admire & ask for advice. I did that when starting out with a cycling photographer & he very kindly used to critique my early stuff.

Hi Sam! Nice to have you back!

Thanks for the comments, don't worry, Mum asked for the gnome for Mothers Day!

I am quite romantic! Be jealous ladies ;)!

I think this is Spring? Although part of me thinks this is summer!

Sometimes I think my kit lens must be one of the better ones, as it does seem very sharp, although I know I've reached my limit with the lens!
Next time I head to Combe, I will try and pluck up the courage to speak to someone!

Day 79

79/365 by JRTurnerPhotography, on Flickr

Not something you see everyday today (unless your in my house). This is the mouth of a starfish! I went fairly close up to show detail, but not so close that you lose a sense of what it is. I love the detail in it!

Canon EOS 40D|50mm f1.8

I'd say don't do it

Are you going to be a 2nd shooter or doing the whole shebang - we need more details.

Definitely unusual, it looks a bit like leather.

LOL think Sarah & I are on the same wave length. Don't do it if you are not totally confident & you will be the only photographer.
If you are going to be assisting and learning, have a go & see if you like it.
I did one last year, didn't want to, but got sort of dropped in it. Photo's came out well, bride & groom liked them so that was good. I did it free though, just in case I cacked the whole thing up & told them several times that the sort of photo's they saw on pro sites were definately not guaranteed & if they wanted that guarantee to pay a pro.

Both of your recent photos are nice and sharp, well composed and I like them!

Sorry, Jake, I have catch-up overload so it's short and sweet tonight!

The whole shebang! It's early days! I am quite confident in my ability to shoot portraits, but there is a lot of pressure on a wedding and I'm not sure about my (lack of) gear.

Definitely unusual, it looks a bit like leather.

It does a bit doesn't it?

As above :) I wouldn't dream of charging for my first one, if I'm going in this inexperienced! But it's a path I've always quite liked the idea of, so I don't want to lose the opportunity! I'd get proper contracts drawn up etc.

Good luck, something I'd never do again though, I can honestly say I didn't enjoy a minute of it.
I was bricking it the whole time with the thought I could ruin the day, plus the bride was a bit of a bridezilla, I'd agreed the free thing on just doing signing register, group shots & some bride & groom portraits. She then sent me a list the day before listing shots from her getting up to the last dance! I said, "erm no" & the hubby to be who works for my hubby (which was how I got pushed into it as apparently they were on a budget, which turned out to be a massive budget, just not for photos) was saying she was upset etc, but I had it in writing what I was going to do & just said if you want more you'll have to pay a professional, which they were not willing to do.
So yes, have a contract!

It's definitely something I'm going to put some serious thought into. It's not the taking photos of people, as I have done photoshoots and gigs before and they've all come out well. It's the lack of gear that worries me. I think I should have 2 bodies, some L and prime lenses and a flashgun really.
Once the first one is out of the way I think I'd find it easier. A contract is a must, whether you're doing your first wedding or you're a pro!
