Jaguar XF

Just got off the 'phone to the DVLA! I have a GP appointment tomorrow and if he gives me the OK, I'm allowed to reapply immediately. Once the DVLA have the application on their system, I'm allowed behind the wheel again. :cartwheels: :)

No point in delivering all the forms to the local DVLA office to speed things up - they'll just put it in the post anyway so it would actually slow things down.

Back driving before xmas! The best present I could possibly receive (World peace, an end to poverty etc would be nice but not specific to ME!)

Good choice

I'd like an XF but that'd mean selling my XK8 and Defender 90 , both ancient but I love them

When the XF comes into my price range, maybe

I would love an XK8! However, an aged MiL means that a proper 4 seater is a must (other car is an MX-5) so a remarkably affordable (relatively speaking) XF was the answer. The local Merc dealer screwed a mate with 2 in his family about WRT warranty work so ruled themselves out of the equation. Apparently the place was great, with proper customer service when it was a privately owned dealership but since a manufacturer takeover they've become metal box shifters and screw the customer! I'm much more a Jag type than a Merc man anyway! Now to contact an old mate who might still have a mould for a pair of mounted Jaguars (old bonnet ornament type) as a sculpture...

my second car (not counting the sirroco that i totalled on the same day i bought it) was a jag XJS with pepperpot wheels £750 - at 21 i thought it was the mutts nuts, right up until i developed a close and personal relationship with the local recovery firm :bang:

never, ever, again (Unless i win the lottery, in which case a classic e type would be nice)

If I ever get to posh car owning wealth again i'll be buying a merc

All I can say is that my mate's recent experience with the local Merc dealer was shocking! Unfortunately they're the handiest main dealer for him for any warranty work (which is surprisingly frequent for a "premium" brand).

As for my driving status, my application has arrived at Swansea so I'm considered to be in the system. Insurance company have been informed and are happy that I'm fit to drive! Going to whizz the XF up Haldon, along the ridge and down Telegraph as a quick test drive before handing the card over for final payment. I'm just hoping that the forecast is vaguely right and that tomorrow will be the best day among the crap weather!

And £750 for an XJS 20 something years ago? No wonder it went bang on you! Had probably done so on its previous owner prompting him to get shot!!!

Be careful - there was a talivan on the haldon straight earlier , i saw it just in time

Ran out of time so cut it a bit fine - no time for the test drive. Did drive it away from Grange though. No talivan (assuming you mean speed trap wagon) on Telegraph, up which we wafted effortlesly at 70, maybe a little over to pass an X5 in I Own This Road mode...

Loving the car! Sod xmas, the solstice is way more relevant anyway, especially since yesterday. Loving being back on the road too! Going to wait for some sunshine before reinsuring the bike - be a waste paying for it and not using it. Fair weather biker? Yup! Spent too many years with cold, wet knees and they complain about that abuse now.

Glad you're enjoying it Nod.....congrats again on regaining your licence.

So you've got it then? Your pluted bloatocrat car!

I urge you to remember Horace Greeley's immortal words "stay West, young man!" :p

Yup, got it! Just in time while I'm still vaguely pluted. As a band, we wrote a song about heading home from uncivilisation into the setting sun... As a couple, we still plan on heading East in it at some point - gotta be cheaper and more comfortable (and, currently more possible!) than public transport!

My dad has the XF 3.0 V6 Diesel. It's a fantastic piece of kit

Luxury you would expect from jag but nice and modern too. The engine is superb. Especially when set to 'Dynamic Race mode' ;)

I can't rate it highly enough it's a gorgeous machine and you wouldn't regret it.

Only things is I haven't driven the merc so no comparison.

Pleased to hear, a year with no driving licence is purgatory. :bonk:

Enjoy the Jag, and the new found freedom!

My XK8 is 17 years old, I bought it 3 years ago with the gearbox down

Through a bit of clever negotiation I ended up with an engine and gearbox out of a 2000 X reg XJ8 for £700 , sold my old engine for £600

I've had it for 3 years now , it's one of the most affordable sports coupes to own because it shares all the mechanicals with the XJ8

There's thousands in scrapyards now so spares are cheap

I'd like a sports saloon,

I'd be hard pushed to make the choice between the XF and a Alfa 159 though

Dave (wibbly), I surrendered my license in September for medical reasons, the loss wasn't due to DD or similar! Even 3 1/2 months without was purgatory, although I survived. I am enjoying the Jag and the freedom, both immensely!!!

Darren, was it you who did the engine swap then had a few electrical gremlins due to ECU issues? At some point, an XK8 might be on the shopping list but for now, we need a practical car in the household (aged MiL).

I can live very happily with the thing in normal mode - dynamic race might well sharpen things up a bit and increase performance but I'm more than happy with the puny top speed of just shy of 150 (not that I'll ever get it close to that!) and the rather slow (around 7s) 0-60. I even prefer D to S - probably due to wanting the extra MPG that shifting up at 2 - 2 1/2 ,000 gives over caning it to the redline before each shift.

And here are a few snaps of it, all grabbed with the XF-1 Fuji between showers and persistance. Will get the D700 etc on it once there's a bit less weather about (and more betterer light!).

Birds' eye view.

Head on (which looks skewed - that's the camber and the lamp post's crooked too!).

That's a nice motor :-) I think there really slick from the back and love the rear lights at night!

Lovely colour too!

Hope you enjoy it!

Very nice car, one of the nicest motors on the road ATM.

Really looking forward to seeing if there's a glut of high-mileage diesel XFs hitting the used car market over the next few years.... seems to be loads of these on the road.

I am enjoying it. Immensely!

I rather like the double row rear lights - mine has the single row though.:( Of course, the rear view is more familiar to most viewers than the front!

Been looking at other colours and so far (not seen them all in the flesh!) my favourite is Caviar - a really deep red/purple/aubergine. Luckily, the one they had in stock with my choice of engine etc was also in a colour combination completely to my taste, Vapour Grey paint, Warm Charcoal soft grain leather seats with Warm Charcoal soft grain upper facia and Dove headlining, Knurled Aluminium with Gloss Burr Walnut veneer. Assorted extras on top of the Premium Luxury spec.

Despite there being a main dealer in town, we don't see that many around, although on the way home last Friday, we pulled up behind another at a set of lights and yet another pulled up in the left filter lane!

The last time we saw them in that sort of concentration was back in 2008, possibly on a launch tour, when 3 went past us on the motorway as we were heading up to Bristol for a holiday. That was possibly the start of a mild infatuation which has now been consumated! :D (Even xmas failed to wipe that grin off my face!!!)

I see loads of them, but that's only because I do ridiculous mileage. To be fair, I see lots of most cars so XFs are be no mean common, especially when you see the amount of 3-series and A4s on the road :)
