Since my big op, I've been wondering what to do with some of my fun money and have decided that a much better car than my current drive (Citroen Xsara Picasso) is a bloody good place to start! I've pretty much narrowed my choice down to 2 candidates, a Merc AMG coupé like a friend already has (I can get his opinion on that and be taken for a test drive) or a Jax XF 3 litre V6 Diesel. As I said, I have a mate with the Merc but the only man I know with an XF has the R version - beyond my means (well, not beyond them but more than I want to pay and too thirsty!). I'm sure he'd take me round the block but it's the smaller Diesel version I'm after rather than the firebreather.

At the moment, nipping down to the dealer for a test drive isn't an option (as explained in several places on the forum, the op has left me with a surrendered driving license that I'm not allowed to reapply for until 6th Jan 2013) so I'm asking/wondering if any of the good folk on the forum have one or have used one reasonably extensively. Or indeed if anyone cares to confuzzle me even further by adding another candidate to my shortlist! (Must be a proper 4 seater, good looking (which rules out Porsches IMO!), reasonably economical 40+ MPG in normal, light footed conditions - heavy footedness is enough fun to render economy to the back burner!) and have a pleasing exhaust note (without being too antisocial late at night). Climate control (ideally 2 or more zone) is preferred over straight air con and satnav is something I'd rather choose than have foisted upon me. Brand reliability and reasonable servicing costs (or a decent number of reputable specialist non-main dealers) are fairly important too, as is not-too-extortionate insurance for a gentleman with a clean license fast approaching 50 years of age. To go with the 4 seats, 4 doors would be handy, although the mother in law can get in and out of a Mazda MX5 easily enough at the moment so a long doored coupé would do. Being able to lower the back seats to carry larger loads is handy too but not a must have - van rental is easy and cheap enough for the few occasions we might need the facility. Oh, I don't like BMWs or Audis either, so no 5 or 7 series or A recommendations, please. 4x4s will generally exclude themselves in the fuel consumption stakes anyway - besides, if I want a 4x4, I want a proper off roader so would get another Defender 90.

Thanks for reading, hope someone can help. Nod.

My MD's Mrs has the Jag of which you speak, and having driven it a time or 2 I can only report that it is a rather yummy piece of kit. The technicals I can't help you on....I'm a girl.

Other than that I am of no use to you whatsoever I'm afraid.....I drive a 12 year old Audi A4, and my shall we say rather grandmotherly style of driving results in 40+ mpg from the old girl (although last night it resulted in me in a ditch....whole other story  )

NEW THREAD!!! :D

I have had a Jaguar XF 3.0 Diesel for just over 2 years. I love it and would certainly buy another one. Not too expensive to buy but spares and servicing are quite expensive. There are however some deals available which include up to 5 years free servicing. A set of 4 tyres would put you back around £800.00 and they last about 20,000 miles. Fuel consumption for a big heavy car is not bad. Over the last 3 months including 300 miles towing a heavy caravan my average consumption has been 35.1 mpg. When I last had it in for servicing the loan car was the new 2.2 litre diesel version - apart from a slightly higher revving engine there was no particular noticeable difference in power terms and they are supposed to be much more economical. My consumption is likely to be worse than you would get because I live in a very hilly and congested part of West Yorkshire. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Ruth (hope you're OK after the ditching) and John.

Chatting to a couple of mates in the trade, they reckon that the 3 is more frugal than the 2.7 and sounds far nicer than either that or the 2.2. Not bothered at all by ultimate performance - the limit is 70 so anything faster than that is wasted unless it's a track toy since I don't plan any Autobahn miles (I reckon it'll still be cheaper to fly to Crete and rent a smaller car for the fortnight than it would be in fuel and ferry costs to drive down - besides, I hate driving right hookers (and left hookers) on the "wrong" side of the road.

I'm pretty sure there's a good and reputable Jag specialist in town who would almost certainly be cheaper for servicing than the main dealer - something I'll be checking out before doing any deals. Not planning any towing, although I wouldn't mind a hook so I could mount our cycle rack (or indeed drag a track toy around!). 20,000 miles is about 3 or 4 years of motoring going on current annual mileage and I'm not a tyre eater (I even try to avoid straddling speed mounds to reduce inner wall wear/damage) so tyre costs shouldn't be too bad when broken down to an annual figure. I would want the thing on proper tyres rather than bloody rubber bands wrapped around big wheels - again, it's for the road not a track! My purchase will be pre-owned rather than new - let some other mug take the first few years' depreciation hit! I'm reckoning that around £20,000 should get me a good one, even at main dealer prices and I can even arrange to be "holdin' foldin'" if that makes any difference these days (it'll certainly be a no credit deal - I like things to belong to me not the bank).

Of course, were it not for the MiL, I would be asking about the XK8 or DB7 (not sure the 9 is cheap enough yet!) - I hope she outlives the XF but if not, I know what I'll probably be chopping it in against!

All I can add is in regards to the xf, not much headroom in the back, any six footers will have to see the world sideways ;)

 Blimey!

Not a problem - MiL is a shortarris!

I drove an XF S (I think, it was the fast diesel one!) at a Jaguar experience, along with all of the fast petrol models (XF, XK and the big lump) and all were very nice. The S was obviously the slowest but was still very responsive and nice and roomy inside. Very well kitted out as well. If I were to get an XF it would be the 2.2 diesel though, still has decent performance but very well kitted for the money, especially second hand. The new models are also very reliable.

The 2.2 lacks the soundtrack! Of course, I would love the R but insurance and fuel costs have to be taken into consideration. I would also love an XK but I need a proper 4 seater for occasions when we ferry the MiL about. Ditto a DB7 (the 9 is probably too rich for my pocket)

That's a shame - you're ruling out a good range of cars (including estates) from both manufacturers! I don't own, but occasionally drive/get driven in the 3.0 XF diesel from time to time. It's a nice car but I'm always disappointed with the relative lack of interior space considering the external size of the thing. It always feels a bit claustrophobic.

I prefer my (petrol) 5 series msport but appreciate the ride, compared to the Jag, wouldn't be to everyone's taste.

A word on depreciation though. If you buy at £20K, yes some "mug" will have taken a hit but there's still plenty to go! How about a nice Citroen C5 (estate or saloon) with the same engine as the Jag at nearly half the price :)

Don't get me wrong, the S was a great drive and I found the interior very roomy. But then I am only 5'9" and 85kg. It is also a big step up from a mazda 3! ;)

Tell you what nod - you invest some of your huge wealth in a jag XF on lease - I'll drive it until you get your licence back and give you a full test report , then you can decide whether to keep it * ;)

( *or order another one if i've wrecked the lease vehicle wanging it arround the branscombe lanes )

no don't thank me, its just the type of guy I am

(Joking aside - I'd be happy to give you a lift to look at cars sometime if you want  - although turing up in my knackered focus might not give quite the right impresion of opulent wealth  )

If I wanted a French car, I wouldn't be getting shot of what I have at the moment! TBH, of all the BMWs, the M range would be the very last I would consider! I'm sure they're very nice and very good but I don't like them (pure prejudice).

If I buy at £20,000, the mug will have taken that as the hit already so I won't be taking as much as him/her.

I'll see if my mate with the Jag's competitor on my shortlist will whizz me round the block when he comes up tomorrow. Unsure of the model letter and number but know it's an AMG and a 2 door coupé with reasonable sized back seats.

Until January when I get my license back, I can't test drive anything or (easily) get to the trading estate where all the dealers are to even sit in the things. It'll be interesting to see what sort of reaction I get from the "prestige" brand salesmen. I may take a recent statement with me to show the sales managers should any of them be too rude! To quote Julia Roberts in the hooker movie, "Big mistake!" (I look slightly unconventional and may even dress down for the occasion!)

Lease? No way! I like all my stuff to be mine, not the bank's, not the lease company's, mine, all mine... Precioussssssssssss! And it's not too long a wait for reapplication day, although that's a sunday, so may have to trot down to Marsh Barton late in the week before to pick up and fill in the relevant forms.

Headroom may be a slight issue. The scar is still a bit sensitive and may remain so for some time. Last thing I want is to be brushing the roof with my head! I'm only 6'1" but that's enough to put most saloons with sunroofs out of the running (short, fat, hairy legs but a long body to make up the difference!)

Yeah I'm 6,4 and that was a major issue when we had an mx5 - I wound up looking over the top of the screen rather than through it :bonk:

I find that cars with curved roofs like the TT and the various porsches are the way to go as you get the critical extra head room .

And that gives me a thought - what about a classic porsche or something of that ilk rather than a new buy, get back to basics with a motor from the days when they new what driving was all about instead of smothering it under layers of technology ;)

Is there no end to your humanitarianism? LMFAO

My boyfriend had one as a courtesy car while his car was in the garage. Very nice, trying to get him to switch cars ;)

You'll never get 40+ mpg from an AMG. You'll be lucky to get half that.

Oddly, I have no problems in HER MX-5 - I can even get in and out of it now I'm cured! (Before the op, I had to drop the hood to get in or out but now I can enter/exit the thing using no hands.)
Don't like the looks of the TT (IMO, it's a Beetle delivered by forceps!) and need a proper 4 seater (and the only proper 4 seater Porsche (proper Porsche - you know, the ones with the lazy designers!) is one of the (IMO) ugliest cars ever to come out of Europe, the Panamera.
Classic Porsches (and other brands) will be getting unreliable now and also have too few seats! Not sure my driving talents are up to the tail happiness of them either. The wee Mazda gives plenty of driving involvement, especially when compared to the Picky A****** (as the Picasso is dubbed).

Stratman, I should have added the Diesel bit! He claims 45 on a long, legal speed motorway run and about 40 on his daily commute. As I said, I'm unsure as to the exact model but the quoted figures for things like that seem to be mid 40s so I have no reason to douby him. I've done the reasonably high performance thing in the past and have grown out of it almost completely, so mileage will be reasonable despite living at the top of the highest, steepest hill in town.

And Pete, if you're very good and lucky, I'll bring whichever toy I end up with down to the beach and take you for a (metaphorical, hopefully not literal!) spin round the block.
HER yoga studio has been busy every weekend, usually requiring opening up and locking up at either end, so haven't managed to get down to B'combe this autumn. Do you work year round and if so, which days are you NOT in the office? Is there an office number I could check you're around on (PM?)?

As I said, I wasn't sure what the model designation was - I have now found out!

It's actually a CLK 320 CDi 2 door Coupé with a factory fitted AMG upgrade. Not sure what the AMG kit involves but he thinks it's a mild engine and suspension tweak, a little body kit (possibly) and big wheels/rubber band tyres. Oh, and a few AMG badges!

An AMG branded rubber band Merc!? :bang:

I bet Herr Uhlenhaut from Muswell Hill would have agreed with this!

My husband had one for 3 years. Although it was an XF S. It was a great car, super comfortable but that's about it for my opinion. I don't know all the technical stuff. It did cost a fair bit when it came to servicing and tyres though. I seem to recall my 6' 2" dad being fairly happy in the back though.

Yep.

A real AMG. No spoilers, no wings, no drainpipe exhausts, just Porsche eating performance.

A brief try on yesterday proved to me that I could get in and out of the thing and sit in it with headroom to spare. Plenty of useful toys and few extraneous ones and very comfortable, despite me not altering any seat settings. Now to see who I know (and see regularly) who has an XF to sit in! As I've said, no decision can be made until I've sat in and driven any candidates but funds will definitely be available once the decision is made.

Well, I've gone and bought myself an XF! Brought it home in a carrier bag and have assembled and fondled it although not yet used it... (0-60 in 6s @ 10fps...)

 Matchbox?

A bit more expensive than that, although not as expensive as the XF will be in January!

Didn't know I wanted a one until I bought a one...

Think Japanese (for) mountain.

Ah...a yama(ha).

One more thought on the car front - have you seen the Mercedes CLS? I've got a couple of friends with these (one with the V8, the other with the diesel) and they both swear by them. Based on the E-class and a bit more special than a pimped up CLK :D

They certainly look imposing in the flesh, have a coupe look but with four doors and very nicely finished inside. A nice looking example (for pics) here:

The other way of viewing the CLS is my sales manager's - "an E-class for the price of an S-class"

Are they that much more than the standard E-class? I'm not sure if the CLS is my cup of tea or not - they certainly look different but maybe that's because there are not too many around.

I was almost tempted by the 5.5 V8 version as they're pretty good value on the used market but I needed 5 seats and it wasn't really too sensible :) I like the E-class estate but they still seem to be silly money.

Hi, I work for Jaguar and just seen this thread. Hope you enjoy your XF. Very good choice. If I can help with anything advice etc just shout.

Good choice

I'd like an XF but that'd mean selling my XK8 and Defender 90 , both ancient but I love them

When the XF comes into my price range, maybe

Thanks all, I fully intend to enjoy it! The only problems will be persuading my wife to wear a chaufeusse's cap and deciding what to read while sat in the back, an FT or a Playboy!

Congratulation on your new toy

Seriously ; don't worry about who's to drive that yummy sexy thing, just get a few models to pose "melting" all over her (the Jag.) ... that's what these cars are for :naughty:
