Jackie's 52 - week 9 Play added Post 97

I don't think any settings will help you get bright sunlight and shadow correctly exposed together, save for bracketing and firing off three exposures at +/-2 stops then merging in software later.

Did you shoot in RAW? If you did it might be worth making two copies of the shot (one with background exposed, one with foreground exposed) then sticking them in your software and erasing half of one shot carefully to get the exposure right.

Might not work, which is a shame, as I like the different interactions of the people and it's difficult to see what's going on in the background.

Ian.

Ian, thanks for the suggestion just a tad beyond me at the moment thanks. Only up to basic PP but may see what I can do at some stage.

That's a tough one to shoot as Ian said. I can't add any more to his suggestions. But it's a good shot for the theme
Thanks. Was vetter than I expected s=even though I was grasping at straws to get a shot in the first place

Nice job, I'd have failed miserably and one or other halves would have been unrecognisable. :D

Ta
What a fun shot - I love all the different expressions. The man on the far right doesn't look very impressed!

Must have been supporting the opposition, South Cumbria to Oldham is a fair trek to get beat:)

Hi Jackie,
Just been looking through your thread - really like your black and white 'people' shots. The 'Rugby Match' reminds me of when I used to go with my dad to watch the local football team - great photo!
Thanks

Great theme for me this week but strugggled to get a shot a really liked. Only work 5 minutes from the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester and intended to get out for 2 or 3 lunch hours. Things beyond my control meant I only made it once. Was going to pick a few from the first visit and then go back and try and improve them on a further visit.

Was stuck between 2 or 3 in the end but decided that my favourite was this engine out of some plane or other (forgot to take a shot of the description plate!). Tried it in B&W but the colour in the original stood out to me.

Was also favouring this shot at one stage

and liked this one due to the steam and hubby's suggestion of a slight green tinge to the shot

Love the footie crowd idea, and as has been said there's not alot you can doo when faced with tat situation... I had a play and to process it any way other than your original actually look just plain wrong! You can see they are in the shade, they should be darker and when I brought up that area they all started looking like they had fake tans of varying degrees! Be satisified as it is, I think it's an excellent take and it's a moment caught very well.

Caught out! Mechanical I like them all, I love the last though - as an engineer I prefer the greasy hands-on stuff! Well taken and hubby was right about the green, and interesting idea that really works.

I thought of doing a similar thing for people but didn't get a chance to try it. That's some tough lighting you had to deal with there too.

I actually prefer the 2nd and 3rd shots for mechanical, I think because of the sense of movement. The first looks really busy and I don't know where to look either so I think picking out a detail might have worked better like you did with the 2nd.

Hi Jackie :) Have only just joined in so sorry for not commenting before. I think I have to agree with Athur on this one....three is a superb image and I really like the green tone...very nicely handled as could look awful if the wrong hue was chosen. :) I also love the fact you can see the movement in it, the steam and the slight blur really bring it to life!

Jumping on the number 3 bandwagon here too. Nice conversion and plenty going on whereas the first just has too much happening and it's difficult to see :)

great composition that really works well, like the steam at the top of the picture and the colour tint seems to work

It's the green one for me. I like the aged look and feel it goes well with the age of the mechanical dooda!

Ooo, that last one's a great bit of mechanical gubbins! Not overly keen on the green, but it somehow suits the image.

and another vote for the third... there's too much in the first. I do like the second...

Another vote for the third one, although it looks a little too green for my taste.

Nice idea though, and the toning does work.

Ian.

Hi Jackie.

I was sure I'd commented on your people shot. I definitely looked at it, but obviously didn't type what was in my head
I think Ian had it spot on with his suggestion for PP though. Definitely worth a go because you've got something good there IMO.

For mechanical, the first shot (and the one you decided to go with, sorry) really isn't doing much for me.
I don't know if it's all the reflective surfaces but it just looks a bit soft and flat to me.
I do like numbers 2 and 3 though

I love the motion in number 2, but on balance I think no.3 is the winner. The processing and the green tinge work perfectly, great composition and I love the little bit of steam.

Struggled for inspiration this week as I'm bombed out at work and at 'play', so took the theme to the limit and came up with PlayING rugby since I'm out every weekend anyway. The best of a bad bunch as I really struggled to focus in on what I needed - was using a monopod for the first time though as a bit of an experiment hoping I could actually get sharper shots. Can't even blame the weather this weekend either, managed to keep ISO down and shutter speed up. Just needed to point the camera in the right direction. I may replace this weekend as I've got 4 games to do in 6 hours on Sunday, must find a better one at the end of that.

Saddleworth Rangers (Black) v Pilkington Recs Under 18s, XBlades National Cup semi-final. For the record my lot (Saddleworth) won 50-4:)

Hi Jackie,

I know absolutely nothing about rugby or sports photography, so it makes it hard for me to offer anything constructive on this.

I'm always hugely impressed by anyone who managed to freeze the action mid-match like this though - so  from me there. It's also very nicely framed IMO.
Well done on actually taking a shot for this week too, instead of relying on an earlier rugby image.

You've said yourself that the focus isn't perfect, but for your first outing with your monopod and given how difficult a subject it is (almost impossible for me!) I'd say that you've done really well.

I've tried shooting under 7's football, that's slow and the focal point is usually a pack of about 22 kids with a ball somewhere in the middle. I fail - everytime. SO, hats off to you for managing to nail the action. The expression on the middle guys face is priceless.

Apart from what you already know about the focus, that's a very good shot, freezing the action nicely Jackie. It fits the theme perfectly.

:agree: The good thing about the 52, is that is pushes you to take different shots. I haven't been brave enough to try this type of photography yet. Well done.

Cheers, Rob
