Jackie's 52 - week 9 Play added Post 97

Now I sat here on Saturday before work and commented on all 3 of your submissions so far and I can't see my post. Which means someone is reading feedback that has no bearing on their pictures !!!!

Week 1 - love the first submission, the colours the DOF the way you're led towards the curve and the fact you had to get 'down and dirty' to get it.

Week 2 - The whole package is spot on, I wouldn't change a thing, even the pin holes.

Week 3 - Image 1 is bang on the money, the colours, textures, light it's all there. Loose the hair though ?

Love the first shot for Chopped, the colours and textures work really well as does the DOF. The second is good, but doesn't have the same impact.

 Wow that first shot has some real impact. Lovely colours, fantastic use of DOF. It works really well – and cloning out that hair shouldn’t be too difficult to do.

I love the composition of the second one too, but it’s just a touch soft on my monitor and doesn’t have quite the impact of the first.

No.1 for me definitely!

Ooops!

Heh. Not been back since week 1, and I've missed yet another 52 thread that I wanted to follow...!

I really like your week 2 submission "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori". Those war poets were something I never appreciated doing my O'level, but do appreciate now. Nice choice.

Chopped is excellent. I saw the first and thought it didn't need a second, then I saw the second and really couldn't decide which I liked.

Some great photos coming out in this thread. Keep it up!

Ian.

Way out of my comfort zone this week but was adamant that the shot I posted would be of someone not something. Fortunate in that we've moved offices in the last couple of weeks and I am now working in Spinningfields giving what should have been plenty of opportunities at lunchtimes - if the weather had been kinder. I still went out most days and got a little comfier as the week went on, not enough to ditch the 55-200 though for something that would have made me get up close and personal.
Stuck between 2 or 3 to post but finally decided on this. I managed to catch enough of this lad's eye and the wording on the sign in the background works well with him being on the phone (I think).

The others that came close are This one. Like the sign advertising coffees and the women drinking them.

and

This one
Pretty brave as I actually took it whilst watiting in the coffee shop. Shot around half a dozen 'from the hip' in the hope I got something useable

Like it, tighter crop to highlight the subject and the sign maybe? I dunno, maybe not!

Just had a look at your flickr Jackie and Street 7 with the 2 girls is the best of the lot IMHO. It's got great composition and nice and sharp.:clap:

I think the one you ultimately choose, from what you said, you were more intent on preserving the sign and that put the subject smack bang in the middle of the frame. Maybe a portrait orientation would have worked better

It's not easy though, especially if you haven't done it before so :clap::clap: for getting out there.

Like your choice Jackie. You've got the evil stare going on and the image is asking questions about who he's there to meet and who's he on the phone to.

Have to admit though that I do prefer the two girls shot. The framing in that is fantastic and the pigeon walking into frame couldn't have been better if you'd paid him to do it.

The one with the two women and pigeon (i was going to say three birds but that would be wrong:D) gets my vote. Your chosen image is great too, I like the eye contact, great shots and well done on getting out there and taking street shots, its not easy is it?

Well done on getting at least 3 decent shots. Also the B&W conversions look well done to me, but I am no expert as I only ever do colour.

I think the 2 girsl picture is probably the strongest, but I also like the one inside the coffee shop as you have caught the ambience and mood. I can see why you like this one but I find the metal post a bit distracting.

Hiya, Going to have to jump on the train with everyone else. The shot with thw two women is my personal fave, BUT this has merrits all of its own and I like the orientation in order the sign stays complete. I like the look you're getting from him too.

Thanks Arthur. Just had a play with it and cropped down to the top of the sign and balanced the sides out. Looks a bit better.

Fair play to you for getting out there and getting some great shots. I really like this but must admit the 2 girls with coffee is my favourite of the 3.
Cheers Carl

Thanks Jill. Was in two minds but there was just something about the guy that I liked:love:

Ta Darren. It was the sign advertising the coffee that I liked and the fact that one of them seemed to have me sussed. Never even noticed the pigeon till I was looing through them.

Not easy at all Iain. Will have to do some more now and gradually reduce the focal length. SHould get loads of opportunites in Summer as there's loads of eateries and places to sit right outside the office.

The coffee shop one was a real hit and hope. Just glad it was useable. I took around half a dozen whilst waiting for lunch:)

Nice shot but I also prefer the one with the two women. :) What made you chose the shot you did over the other ones?

The guy;) Seriously it was the sign adn the fact he was on the phone seemed to go together. The hard stare made it.
Wasn't sure on the women as I thought it needed a closer crop but would have lost some of the quality.

Jackie I really like the 2 this week that you've only linked to, you should post them properly so more people will see!

For the 3rd one I think the poster goes really well with that guy drinking his coffee :)

OK - the two that didn't make it, and a slight edit on the one that did

I think I agree with your first choice, particularly now that you have cropped it. The combination of the poster and the lad on his phone is perfect, and you have caught a wonderful expression. I can almost hear him talking.

I also like the other two, particularly the girls and the pigeon.

Well done for making yourself go out and have a go - it's really paid off.

im going to go with the guy on the phone :) , the tighter crop makes it work so much better, although the pigeon one is very good :D

top effort

Much better with the crop Jackie. well done for getting out there and doing it.

Ta v much. I'm preferring this version myself now and I feel like I want to get out and do some more. better than sitting in the office all lunchtime.
I like all three Jackie, but my fave is the pigeon girls!

Cheers, Rob

Thanks for the comment Rob

that's a great capture Jackie, i wonder who he's on the phone to, he looks really sheepish like he's up to no good. ha he probably on the phone to his mum

Thanks Chris. Wish I knew, I wasn't getting that close I could listen in though:)
I like the new crop of the spinningfields guy, makes it a lot bolder.

Me too!
I think you made the right choice, although i like the coffee shop image also.

Thanks Martin. Coffee shop is my second favourite. Just the fact that I had the guts to stand there and point the camera. Felt like everyone heard the shutter go off.
Much better with the crop Jackie. well done for getting out there and doing it.
Cheers John

Hi Jackie. Its fairly obvious you have a very skilled eye for composition, your first 4 shots have a great quality to them. I,m happy to get one for a theme your coming up with several. You'll just have to do the same every week:) I look forward to following your projects in the future as I have already been looking at your rugby shots, my youngest plays U16 in the yorkshire league
and all the family are passionate Hull Fc fans,so keep em coming....Mick

Thanks Mick. I have to work harder than they seem to come out. Find it much easier following a rugby ball around with the camera. What teams he play for?

Holderness Vikings, he,s a big daft prop:lol:

Struggled all round this week. Had a couple of ideas as to what I wanted to do but been very busy most evenings and had no transport available to me this weekend so it was back to improvising. Not overly happy with the outcome as I was very limited in what was available to me - I really must get a flash on the shopping list.

Anyway - decided to use my lad's Scalextric and was unsure then what to do. I tried a few static shots of one car, not too bad but that wasn't really, in my mind, keeping with the theme. Plan B - put one car on the track to use as a focal point, lie on the floor with camera in one hand, Scalextric remote in the other. Send a 2nd car round the track as slow as I could and fire away everytime it got near the static car. Pretty damned uncomfortable too. Found the plainest sheet I had to hide the rubbish that was in the background (only have a small living room so couldn't avoid background mess whichever way I put the track).

I may revisit this at some stage in the future to do what I intended doing but for now this is my measly offering.

Hi Jackie,

Well done on getting such a good selection of shots for street. I'm going against the crowd and saying that my favourite is the 2 guys drinking coffee, but they're all well spotted.

Lovely idea for speed with the one car overtaking the other.
The background isn't really working for me though. I know that you needed to cover up the clutter, but I'm just not convinced that the white sheet is doing it justice, or maybe it's just the creases that are distracting me

I think the idea works well and the image clearly conveys speed. I do agree with Sarah about the backdrop, I think it's the shadows where the sheet isn't smooth...

Hi Jackie,a good effort of a good idea especially in difficult conditions, maybe a bit of a play in PP to get rid of distractions in the sheet would improve it...Mick

Thanks Sarah. I did struggle and I'm not happy with the outcome, I tried all ways to get the sheet (blue btw) to stay straight, ran out of hands in the end

Cheers John. Must re-shoot it at some stage.

Micky - and there lies my problem. Photoshop skills are pretty zero and I don't have 5 mins spare to learn never mind a few hours. Can tweak levels/sharpen a bit but am a noob really. Roll on the end of April, rugby season out of the way and around 30 extra hours a week:)

I have seen your shots and thought I had commented?? - maybe you left me speechless, lol.

Week 1 - the first has nice DOF, but your second choice is more interesting and more
suited to the theme
Week 2 - I do like the pin holes, but the Poppy seems blown on my screen, maybe a tad
darker, maybe my screen!?
Week 3 - love the colour and detail - change nothing ;)
Week 4 - nice shot, great expression and better crop second time round
Week 5 - it shows motion and works with the theme, well done - perhaps clean up the background a tad though ;)

Ok, so week 7 (without a week 6). Had a majorly hectic couple of weeks and last weeks 'Present' just didn't emerge from anywhere. I still know what I want to do and how to do it, just not been able to get out and shoot the damn thing.

Actually lucky to get an offering this week as well and resorted to getting a shot whilst taking my usual Saturday afternoon rugby. Was hoping for a better crowd, but freezing temperatures (lucky the game was on) put paid to that one.

Took three in the end of the spectators in the stand opposite to where I shoot from, this was my best effort out of a poor set. I like the fact that it shows the different priorities people have; it could almost be that they are wathing two different games, those at either end are looking in opposite directions....the women at the front chatting as are the two chaps to the right. I think this may have been at a break in play which would explain the different goings on but can't be sure. Converted it to b&w as my settings weren't ideal for shooting into a shaded stand when most of the game was played in bright sunshine.

4373144645_1e74bb399a_o.jpg

I don't think any settings will help you get bright sunlight and shadow correctly exposed together, save for bracketing and firing off three exposures at +/-2 stops then merging in software later.

Did you shoot in RAW? If you did it might be worth making two copies of the shot (one with background exposed, one with foreground exposed) then sticking them in your software and erasing half of one shot carefully to get the exposure right.

Might not work, which is a shame, as I like the different interactions of the people and it's difficult to see what's going on in the background.

Ian.

That's a tough one to shoot as Ian said. I can't add any more to his suggestions. But it's a good shot for the theme

Nice job, I'd have failed miserably and one or other halves would have been unrecognisable. :D

What a fun shot - I love all the different expressions. The man on the far right doesn't look very impressed!

Hi Jackie,
Just been looking through your thread - really like your black and white 'people' shots. The 'Rugby Match' reminds me of when I used to go with my dad to watch the local football team - great photo!
