I've upgraded to the Canon 24-70

I have heard an opinion once that the 24-70 and 70-200 are the real classic L lenses...

Obviously among the "regular" walkabout lenses.

Or is it because they simply offered a fair range of focal length in the film days?

You got it spot on there - 35mm or FF gives you super wide to telephoto in two lenses with (next to no) IQ deterioration

This is why I really want to know where they are going with the 5D upgrade - would love to have FF but wouldn't want to buy for that amount a month or two before they upgrade the model. THEN AGAIN... this Mk iii is not so far beyond the 5D (pricewise) either:thinking:

been wondering about the 5d & 1ds MkII upgrades. Can only think the digic III will be included and ISO management (though the 5d doesn't really need better ISO)

More pixels on the 1Ds would be counterproductive i would imagine...... its a mystery

1dmkIII has an AF problem at the moment though. they fiddled with a near as damn-it perfect system in the mkII and now its not working right any more. oh well...

Let's start a fresh thread on this - I think we have thread-jacked far enough:rules:

well, we've done ok haven't we :D, new lens, hamsters, 1dmkIII...can't fault it for variety ;)

I love my 24-70 but the thought of IS........oh my credit card is crying....when can I get one ....and will I ever be able to sell a non-IS once it's available??

The 10-20 Sigma is a lovely lens and the 24-70 doesn't replace it..it's just an extra addition.

What do you think about that:

This is the lens that I do 95% of my photography with. What people have to understand here is that there is some sacrifice when you have a lens that provides you such versatility. I have used this lens since 2003, basically traveling the world with it. What I have discovered, the key to keeping this lens in top notch working order. The day I open one out of the box, I totally tape up the top half of the lens with a strong gaffers tape. This is done to structurally keep the lens taught. This helps eliminate any torquing that takes place with day to day walking around with this on your shoulder. By doing this ad hoc tape job you will have to give up your manual focus option. I know this sounds bizarre, but its true. Also I never and I mean never, do I walk around with the lens extended to 24mm focal length, for this really adds stress to the lens. If you want you lens to maintain critical sharpness for years to come and if you use the lens daily, almost year round like I do. This will keep it sharp. I know many of my colleagues who after 1 or 2 months of heavy use complain that it is no longer sharp. I can actually keep mine going for up to 3 years with out having to have the lens serviced.

To view my work with this lens go to VIIphoto.com and look at my work. Like I said earlier 95% of it is done on this lens. Also my book "My America" was almost shot entirely with the 24-70, 2.8.

We do not live in a perfect world. But for me this lens comes quite close to being perfect. Minus the tape job.

Yours Truly,

Christopher Morris

Is IS really needed on a lens that only goes to 70mm? There must be a lot of shakey togs about :-)

Have to say I wouldn't feel comfortable covering my 24-70 with gaffa tape the day after it arrived..

I've just picked one up for an absolute bargain price, had previously hired one from Stewart for 2 weeks and loved the lens, knew I had to have one, and got it Friday. Love it. Great to walk about, crisp and sharp, and very quick focusing. IS? Never noticed a need for it when I had one on hire, probably would be nice, but surely it would add to the weight considerably, and this thing does weigh enough already.
