Ive never really liked Jeremy Clarkson ...

Gervais can write some very clever and funny stuff, but he himself isn't that funny

Ghost Town - great film
Invention of Lying - great film
Cemetery Junction (written by Gervais and merchant) - great film
Extras - funny, but it is the actors who are funny in it (written by Gervais)
Idiot Abroad - Karl is genius
The Office - total carp
The dwarf program he has written at the moment - total carp.

I've never liked Gervais, his work is infantile and verging on downright nasty (regardless of his claims to the contrary) and he himself comes across as a deeply unpleasant individual.

So when I write....... 'did you hear the one about........' does that not express that it is a joke?

Common Sense helps

Smilies help with sarcasm otherwise you are just being rude :)

anyone who thinks gervais is funny needs to be taken out and shot

It would be cheaper to shoot Gervais, but by shooting his fans the increase in coffin sales, hurses, extra fuel and flowers may boost the economy.

Hmmm

couldn't agree more - the difference is that whilst that is my opinion, I understand that others find him funny and frankly life is way too short to find any urge within me to take offence at what he says or what he does. Ditto Stewart Lee, who is also as funny as haemorrhoids imo... humour, like photography and art, is subjective, so it makes me laugh that people who preach about a tolerant society can be so quickly offended by humour they don't personally find funny. :naughty:

Gervais - IMHO - comes across as a very smug self satisfied man. Cant stand him or his humour

Without presenting an argument as to why?

Probably because humour is subjective. I have a sense of humour that many would find offensive but it stems back to my original career as a doctor. A dark sense of humour is often a good coping mechanism in these kinds of high pressure jobs where outcomes often aren't good. The same thing probably goes for the armed services etc too.

You're quite right, Yvonne, that was my opinion, not a statement of fact.

Allow me to rephrase......

I've never liked Gervais, I find the odious little man's work infantile and verging on downright nasty (regardless of his claims to the contrary) and he himself comes across as a deeply unpleasant individual.
:D

I realise that, however disagreeing with a statement without offering a reason as to why one is doing so is pointless.

If the reasoning is subjective its fine, especially with something like comedy. Unlike photos there are not technical elements to fall back on and it is very immotive and often difficult to describe why you like something. I find him funny too (sometimes anyway- the last few things he has done are getting rather samey, I think he may be a one trick pony) but couldn't tell you exactly why. Mind you he does have a very punchable face! ;)

And explaining what I find funny to someone that finds Gervais as funny as herpes is also pointless. :) You either get someone's humour or you don't. There is little to explain.

Clarkson having his outrageous opinions to a deadline for money can't be compared to actual award winning comedians. The funniest thing about Clarkson I've always thought was seeing a badly out of shape 50 year old man wearing stonewashed double denim.

...even watch his take on Top Gear that lasts for 15 minutes.

So not knowing who Stewart Lee was, I decided to look this up.

I wanted to turn it off at about 3 minutes, but put up with it until at 9 minutes I couldn't watch anymore.

Honestly, he's the comedic equivalent of a bad X-Factor audition!

Unless this is him on a really bad day, I couldn't have laughed if I tried. I imagine it would be very easy for a skilled comedian to do a skit against Top Gear, but this was brutal.

To call him pathetic would be a promotion. It was horrendous! And that's not even to call him out on his improper use of 'cynicism'.

A shocking display of celebrity mediocrity.

If we all had the same sense of humour, life would be boring!

I did a study for my AS Level Psychology on the correlation between personality and sense of humour. It was very interesting. Iirc, my study showed that certain personalities preferred satire, others preferred something else etc. it's been a few years since I did my A levels so I've forgotten what it was. Wonder if it's still at my parents house.....

No one is being personal, so what is the problem?

Yes people disagree, but as long as everyone is mature, all is good :)

That's me stuffed then (taking 5 years into account!)

It's just a joke, like on Top Gear....

i watched episodes of the new Life's too short show last night. It was so funny, especially the wedding speech bit. Highly recommended!

I must say I did laugh a bit (a muted guffaw at best) when Clarkson said it, probably due to the reaction of Baker and Jones. In the last two days I've found the "I'm offended" reaction actually hilarious.....

To think this thread has wandered from a great british oaf Clarkson, Gaddifi, executions rounding up with the comic genius or lack of from Lee and Gervias, reads more like a rambling Ben Elton.

These are the kinda of threads that keep me around :thumbs:

Interesting, I've watch one episode, the one where another dwarf exposes himself in a Police station and Warwick Davis ends up in a bin and in all honesty I thought it was some of the poorest "comedy" I've ever seen and, judging by the reviews I've read, I'm not alone...

haven't seen that one yet. But the way you describe it -

dwarf
exposing himself
police station

I'm laughing already

The series so far has been fairly sub par, mostly just using ideas recycled from the Office and Extras. The wedding speech was actually rather funny and classic Gervais- uncomfortable, offensive and yet hilarious. When he gets it right its great but otherwise there is a lot of recycling going on.

Precisely. I wasn't offended. It was just bad.

You really need to watch to the end. He was using an exaggerated form of the rhetoric and the implied values of Top Gear to satirise the rhetoric and the implied values of Top Gear.

Now I am not a Clarkson fan. Simple fact of the matter is that he told a joke. Like with all comidians they tell a joke/tell a story looking to either amuse or offend different people. Clarkson succeeded in offending some but he probably also succeeded in amusing others. Because I am totally ambivolent to him, he succeeded on neither front. Just to put this into context, I was in favour of the strikes and I did indeed march.

I can't stand people who are offended after the fact, like in the case of the Ross/Brand thing. It really gets my goat.

I actually don't find either Lee or Herring funny, I prefer Noble, Stanhope, Rich Hall and Frankie Boyle.

As much as i hate Clarkson, apologizing for a joke and having to apologise for a joke is sad. Just sad.

The Liam Neeson scene was the funniest so far. I can see now why Gervais doesn't do a third series as this Extras clone doesn't really work.

do you feel that he isn't funny FACT - or do you see it as just not your taste?

i've never seen him myself

Obviously everyone has different tastes. I don't like Ricky Gervais for example, but I can see the appeal.

I can't see the humourous appeal at all. Perhaps there's some other appeal, e.g. you want there to be as many lefties in the public eye as possible. Other than that, I'm lost on what makes him a comedian.

Watch the 15 min Top Gear skit. I think you'll understand.

The Neeson scene was better than the Johnny Depp one. The problem is that the actors knew what to expect because of Extras and ended up with people reaally hamming it up! May as well get Brian Blessed in! ;)
