Going to get back into a dslr I've decided on a nikon d5000 ...... But the new d3100 launches i'n two weeks ??

What should I do wait ? Will the d5000 drop i'n price or is the d3100 better?

Please guys n dolls your thoughts please ?

Thanks i'n advance for your much needed input

d5k is different type of camera . it's more of a d90 packed in small body as d3*00 is an entry level, they don't compete. but the price could drop anyway.

Ty star. Maybe I'm missing something what makes the d5000 so much better than the d3100. The only reason I chose the d5000 was I thought the articulated screen could be so Much better for unusual angled shots. If the d5000 is that much better then I'll go for that one. Will be interesting to see *** others think too

added a bit. But then neither does the D3100.
I would get the D5000 if it were me

This is going to sound like a dull q? Can you explain the af motor. Thinks I might be out of my depth here ? Don't they have auto focus ( feeling a tad stupid now)

The DXXXX series of cameras does not have an AF motor built into the body of the camera. This means you need to buy AF-S lenses which have the motor built in to the lens. NOt really a big worry unless you have existing Nikon lenses that are not AF-S and plan to use them on your new camera. With the D5000 ANY NIkon lens can be mounted but only those with AF-S will auto focus.

Most DLSRs have an autofocus motor built in to the body that will be used to autofocus the lens.

The cheaper bodies do not which means you need to buy more expensive lenses that come with the AF motor built in.

I bought a D60, no AF motor, sucks. I'd only recommend people buy cameras with the motor in from now on :)

Wow I love this place. Thanks for taking time to reply. Will rethink as the d5000 twin tense kit came two lenses. Will go and check then again thank

AS I said, the lack of AF motor is only a problem if you have existing lenses that don't have one in-built. If you are buying from new than it shouldn't be a problem. There is a very large selection of both Nikon and third party lenses that have in-built motors and they really aren't that much more expensive than the standard without-motor lenses. For what its worth the D500 is a great little camera. Can do most of the things the D90 can do and has the same AF system and sensor (also shared with the D300 IIRC). I have been very happy with mine anyway, and paired with the two lenses that I have , it does everything I need it to.

You only need to worry about 'Nikon AF motor in body' if you plan to be an 'anorak', ie., part of which is collect old lenses, to some, its as much part of the hobby as taking pictures:shrug:

My limited experience indicates that the newer Nikon AF-S lenses focus faster, quieter, and I would hazard a guess, 'more accurately at the lower and entry level' end of the market . . . ?

Third party manufacturers are covering widely, the new Nikon AF-S system . . . Its taking the die-hards a bit of time to catch up . . . :naughty:

As for the D5000, its streets ahead of the D3k. The 5000, is within a gnat's whisker, 'a D90 where it matters' . . . and you have the swivel screen as an extra.

You may feel the kit lenses are letting the side down . . . believe me, they will be as good as you for a long while, years, not months? By that time you will understand the hobby better, be able to make your own decisions on the direction you wish to take.

.... and when you want to use primes . although I believe that the 35mm f1.8 had a built in motor.

Primes, I would suggest, are a long way down the road? However, each to his own view . . . ;)

I note SWACD says "get back into DSLR" . . . so he might feel the need to nudge up to a D90?

In any case, the way I understand it, its 'manual everything' by that stage . . . :naughty:

My view on primes is covered by, "anoraks" . . . "collecting old lenses", and . . . "You may may feel the kit lenses are letting . . . By that time . . . etc".

Horses for courses . . .

35mm 1.8 does have a built in motor as it works on my D60, and primes are great lenses, they force you to think more about the shot and have great quality :)

Certainly not for anoraks etc, just people who know what quality is :)

yea I love my 35mm AF-S

it's not for anoraks . it's not even horses for courses .
primes are the best . period. although 24-70mm is in the same league.

Thanks for the feedback. Just to settle the record I've never had a dslr I've have a vintage canon a1 slr setup yrs ago so saying get back into dslr was a mistake

And I'm. Gutted to see how much my old kit is now worthless. My my my how things change

Thanks for your time and effort to reply

I'd go for the D90, and save yourself upgrading later, good camera to start with I think

NWgaz is right, go for a D90 from the start. I have just got one from the classifieds on here and I'm going to sell me D3000.

The only way I can afford a d90 is secondhand as new is far too much ty again for the feedback. That large tin of worms is opened again. Lol

:lol::lol::lol:...........tried to trade in my mint Canon A1 and 5 FD lenses at a bona-fide camera shop in Glasgow
he was VERY apologetic - showed me a collection of used FD gear in store and could take no more .....:shake:. Now kept for nostalgia.

anyway - a good guy, so no offense - he did then sell me a D5000...

actually am enjoying it - Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 and a Nikon 55-200 VR due tomorrow [ bought from here !]

and despite the scathing comments above :D I bought a 40year old pre-Ai Nikkor Nippon Kogaku 50mm f2 - superb optics - and I dont have an anorak either....:nono:

ahem...Comet ?

D5000 + 18-55 DX = £479..no doubt there are other deals
elsewhere but the Comet is my local and the Salesman is a keen tog

you dont "need" VR on a 18- 55
but good when you get a 55-200 - about £115 used on here..

As I said, takes the the 'die-hards' a bit of time to catch up, there is another parallel world out here. However for those that want primes, more power to the elbow, strength in the arm and dont miss the . . . ah, dam! missed it . . .:| I was changing my prime lens over :naughty:

By the way I use a 50mm F1.8, manual focus is not a big problem using the D5000's 'Rang Finder facility' . . .

In the normal world, its still 'horses for courses', depending on 'whats your bag' . . . ?
